Vanguard Developed Markets Index Fund (VDVIX) expenses examines the history of the fund's measurable expenses: the management fees[note 1] and the commission ratio, which measures the cost of fund brokerage commission expense.

The fund, which at inception (August 17, 1999) began operations as the Vanguard Tax-Managed International Fund, accepted the assets of the Vanguard Developed Market Index fund through a fund merger completed on April 4, 2014. The combined fund was renamed the Vanguard Developed Market Index Fund.

Transaction fee history

  • The fund imposed a 0.75% purchase fee from August 17, 1999 through March 31, 2000.
  • The fund imposed a 0.25% purchase fee from March 31, 2000 through March 31, 2002.
  • The fund imposed a 2.00% redemption fee on shares held less than one month from August 17, 1999, through May 22, 2012. This fee was rescinded on May 23, 2012.
  • The fund imposed a 1.00% redemption fee on funds held for at least one year but less than five years from August 17, 1999 through April 27, 2011. On April 28, 2011 this redemption fee was rescinded.

  2. The fund created new Investor shares in 2013 as a result of its merger with the Vanguard Developed Market Index fund.
  3. The fund renamed Investor Shares as Admiral Shares on May 13, 2011.
  4. The Fund CR (Commission Ratio) is derived by dividing the brokerage commissions paid by the fund into a fund's average net assets. Brokerage commission expense is the only transaction expense that can be quantified. Additional transaction costs, such as spread costs and market impact costs, must be estimated.
