madsinger monthly report (February 2012)

Post by madsinger »

Here is a big fat collection of portfolios, with their February 2012 returns, 2012 YTD return, and annualized returns since 1999, 2002, 2007 and 2009 (13 years 2 months, 10 years 2 months, 5 years 2 months, 3 years 2 months). I broke them into four categories, roughly corresponding to 100/0, 80/20, 60/40, 40/60 stock/bond portfolios, sorted by 10 year Total Return. The 3 fund is 50/30/20 Total Stock/Total Int'l/Total Bond. The s&d is 10 each of VFINX, VIVAX, NAESX, VISVX, VGSIX, 25 VGTSX, 5 VINEX, 20 VBMFX. The coffeehouse is a 60/40 described at The Coffeehouse Investor. The Newsletter portfolios are from a newsletter following Vanguard funds. William Bernstein's "Sheltered Sam" is an all stock portfolio which is 20% VFINX, 25% VIVAX, 5% NAESX, 15% VISVX, 10% VGSIX, 3% VGPMX, 5% each VEURX, VPACX, VEIEX, and 7% VTRIX. The madsinger portfolio is my real-world portfolio, roughly 61/5/3/31 stock/REIT/PM/bond.

And, the 1, 3, and 5 year charts. These reflect the 12, 36 and 60 month returns for these portfolios. First three columns are annualized returns, last two are total returns.

Another up month for stocks. Bonds rather flat. My "specialties" (REITs and PM) were both down a little for the for the month. Internationals are up 11% to 17% for the first two months of the year. US in the 7% to 10% range. Pretty big returns for two months!

The 1,3,5 year charts reflect the "bottom" of three years ago (March 9 actually, but I don't have all of the returns from then). The portfolios have gained impressively since 2/28/2009, with stock heavy portfolios almost (or even surpassing) doubling in value. However, the 5 year totals show that the previous two years before that were pretty rough! Hot Hands down about -20% in the past five years, and the stock heavy portfolios in the 1% to 3% annualized gains.

Just a reminder to think about rebalancing if your portfolio demands it, and not to get too excited with these uncharacteristically large gains for the first two months of the year!

Madsinger - Thank you for the 1, 3 and 5 year averages.

If possible, since we are long-term investors, it would be interesting to see what the 10-yr annualized looks like (and Vanguard should do it since it would reflect another practice to what they preach - long term investing).

Even with the bear, I was surprised at how low some of the 5-yr looks were - I'll take my 5.3%. Now, if I only could have timed the bottom better.

I figure the odds be fifty-fifty I just might have something to say. FZ

Thanks Brad,

Just to add to the mix - with YTD, 1 and 3 year annualized returns (according to M*).

From portfolios set up earlier: Who's the fairest of them all?

Portfolios have an average long-term stock:bond ratio of approx. 75:25
