madsinger monthly report (October 2011)

Post by madsinger »

Here is a big fat collection of portfolios, with their October 2011 returns, 2011 YTD return, and annualized returns since 1999, 2001, 2006 and 2008 (12 years 10 months, 10 years 10 months, 5 years 10 months, 3 years 10 months). I broke them into four categories, roughly corresponding to 100/0, 80/20, 60/40, 40/60 stock/bond portfolios, sorted by Total Return since 2001. The 3 fund is 50/30/20 Total Stock/Total Int'l/Total Bond. The s&d is 10 each of VFINX, VIVAX, NAESX, VISVX, VGSIX, 25 VGTSX, 5 VINEX, 20 VBMFX. The coffeehouse is a 60/40 described at The Coffeehouse Investor. The Newsletter portfolios are from a newsletter following Vanguard funds. William Bernstein's "Sheltered Sam" is an all stock portfolio which is 20% VFINX, 25% VIVAX, 5% NAESX, 15% VISVX, 10% VGSIX, 3% VGPMX, 5% each VEURX, VPACX, VEIEX, and 7% VTRIX. The madsinger portfolio is my real-world portfolio, roughly 62/5/3/30 stock/REIT/PM/bond.

Hmmm...the new forum makes the chart a scroll chart...not quite as useful.

Okay...October! The madsinger portfolio was down -2.5% on Oct 1, and down -2.0% on Oct 31. In between, it was up enough to make the return for the month over 8%!

Nothing very insightful to say...stocks were up big. If you were holding them, you had a big positive month.

Brokerage ~ down about 9% YTD, multiples on holdings are still well below the 2011 highs
- Benchmark VT is down about 1-2% YTD at the end of Oct I think.

IRA ~ up about 30% YTD, but multiples are closer to 2011 highs than the 2011 lows. October was a huge month for me here.

Perpetual thanks Brad!

Quick comment on the new format. Sitting here browsing posts on my iPad and the table doesn't scroll at all. And there is no way to see entire table.

(I'll reserve my snarky iPad comments...)

I did not realize this. Let's see if this helps:

I'm glad the split up charts work.

As for the iPad...my main problem with it is the lack of keyboard. I'm a touch typist, and whenever I've tried to work with one of those "on screen" keyboards...well...it's always a disaster. I find that I rest my fingers on the keys, which means I'm constantly "typing" letters I don't mean to be typing. Then there's the fact that I can't "feel" the keys...well...you see my problem.

Keep in mind you're listening to someone who still doesn't like to use a mouse! Give me a good DOS prompt, and a "clicky" keyboard, and I'm in my comfort zone!

Didn't think you were old enough to even know what a DOS prompt was, Brad. :D
