Anyone else experience the issue with hinge(s) breaking on their Lenovo laptop? It is a known issue and one that Lenovo seems unwilling to cover under warranty. In our case, our 5 month old Idea Pad had a hinge failure that made opening the laptop impossible without also causing damage to the screen. I contacted Lenovo and was told that the warranty doesn't cover damage to the screen. I explained that the damage was caused by the hinge failure, which is a known issue.
I dropped the device off at my local Geek Squad that is authorized to do repairs on Lenovo computers. They commented that they see this issue all the time, not limited to Lenovo devices. They contacted their repair center in Kentucky and were told it should be covered, but they wouldn't know until they received the device. Kudos to Geek Squad for being very helpful.
I have read on Lenovo forums and also on BBB's site (under Lenovo complaints) that consumers have gotten reimbursed for repairs after going through the BBB, so I guess that would be a good thing to try should I get charged.
The laptop was purchased through Costco, and while their concierge service was very helpful, they would not cover the device because it was still under Lenovo's warranty.
Any other Bogleheads experience this hinge failure issue, whether with Lenovo or another manufacturer? Did you get it replaced/repaired at no cost?

Re: Lenovo broken hinge issue
Had this on an IdeaPad 330, hinge was extremely stiff, my child broke the plastic casing on both sides on the LCD, not knowing any better. This was out of warranty, 2 years from purchase. There's some fixes on YouTube, but it's too late for me as the damage is beyond repair, and the laptop had other issues with the plastic. I thought getting the Lenovo brand meant quality, as we use in our company, but my model was junk, IMHO. Very disappointed.

Yes, my son had a Lenovo Yoga. I think it made it two years before it experienced what I learned was a very common problem - the broken hinge. Since it was no longer under warranty, the repair cost was not reasonable compared to the original price so it got junked. I will never buy another Lenovo product at this point and don’t recommend anyone else to either.

Keep in mind that Lenovo, like other brands (HP, Dell) makes consumer-oriented junk and business oriented machines that are much more durable. I have a 16year old Thinkpad and a 10 year old Thinkpad still running linux apps flawlessly. I think both of those machines date subsequent to the IBM hand off, not entirely sure.

Lenovo Thinkpad T-series have metal hinges and are built like tanks. You can buy used, off-lease models cheaply. Something to consider next time.

UPDATE: After receiving a notice from Geek Squad that the repair would cost over $400, I made a complaint against Lenovo through the BBB. The next day I got a call from Lenovo corporate offering to reimburse me for the repair.

I'd have to second this...my thinkpad has sturdy metal hinges and is going on 6 years now. (It has other issues, but they're fairly minor and I can live with them for now.)ClevrChico wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 10:35 am Lenovo Thinkpad T-series have metal hinges and are built like tanks.
