Wife and I are ages 41 and 37. We have around 500k in retirement and are 100% equities. We will stay 100% equities until the day we die.....its def not for everyone but we have never batted an eye during tough market downturns so we know its the right allocation for us

I’m 52 and my wife is 51. I plan to retire in next 3 to 8 years; actual timing depends on overall job stability, etc. My wife will work until 65 as we are on her healthcare plan and she is willing to keep working until we both qualify for Medicare. She teaches High School and we plan to travel to Europe quite a bit during summertimes after I retire “early”. Our overall allocation between both our retirement savings is ~40% US equity, 20% International equity, 30% bonds (mainly US total bond), 5% REIT ETFs, 5% Gold ETFs. We plan on keeping close to this allocation in early retirement.

AA average between us 75/25
Both Roth’s and wife’s 401k all in TDF.
My pension @55 will cover about 60% of spending.

Thanks for sharing. I still don’t quite get rising equity portfolio after retirement. Mentally, I don’t get the difference from your approach vs. going to 90/10 now and just having a declining equity portfolio over 10 years (3% each year) and then staying at 60/40 forever ( an example alternative). Anyhow, no need to answer. I guess that’s the beauty of this thread, to understand different approaches…
The basic idea is to have lower equities when 1) you're no longer making contributions meaning because if there's a downturn you're not buying at a discount and/or 2) when the portfolio is at its lowest amount expected amount. This is the moment you retire. Therefore starting at 60/40. The purpose of rising equities after retirement is prevent having to sell equities if equities drop as we'll need to sell bonds to get to increased equities asset allocation.

Sort of thinking of just going %100 USA stocks though. I hate being a widower (daughter is awesome and on track to excel). Sigh.

The Bogleheads site no longer has surveys or polls.

But here are:
(1) a 2015 graph compiling posts: "Bogleheads' age versus their asset allocation", link;
and (2) a bar graph and table comparing results in results in 2007, 2011 and 2015, link.

A minor clarification. The Bogleheads forum no longer has anonymous polls.

An explanation by the site owner is here: Polls Disabled

The recommendations by the experts are only guidelines, and those of us posting are commenting anecdotally since circumstances determine appropriateness. Age 79 with a 60/40 portfolio based on those circumstances, an allocation that is based on our own "expert" determination that is no more than our analysis of our circumstances combined with acceptance of the results.

A large collection of anecdotal information can be helpful in my opinion.

Yes, anecdotal information is helpful. The intended point is that it is insufficient. That is typically known by more experienced investors but intended to be a suggested consideration for less experienced ones.

33 years old, 7-figure portfolio - 135% equities (using IBKR margin loan), 60% US / 40% International via VWRA (Vanguard FTSE All-World Accumulating).

The recent months have been a test of emotional fortitude, but I realize that I can stay the course, and I rebalance every month (leverage goes up as the market goes down).

What is your asset allocation and age?

Post by Engaging in sloth »

[Thread merged into here --admin LadyGeek]

With the recent market reductions I am curious as to what is my fellow Boglehead's AA and age? If you are retired please specify. If you have a pension please specify. Thank you.

Personally I very much enjoy an AA thread. I find it beneficial.

DH 61, DW 62
AA: 37/63 (cash)
DW has a non-cola pension that currently covers majority of our expenses
We will take SS later...DW probably at age 64; DH between ages 67-70

Retired and ages 87 and 85 with a 40/60 asset allocation for the past ten years. Drawing SS benefits and military pension. May consider using some "dry powder" when, in my estimation, the low point is about to be reached. :?:

Many here sneer at it but I do "age in fixed/bonds" and it has worked very well for me. I'm about 60 and am 40/60. When the market drops I yawn and go to bed for a good sleep. Most of my fixed is TIAA Traditional; my Roth and Variable Annuity have bond funds.

I'm 52, retired 3 months ago in March 2022.

AA: 50/50 (last checked in February, recent market changes mean I'm probably lower stocks now. But 50/50 is the target.)

I'm doing a bond tent, so plan to increase stocks over time. Not sure how high I'll go, but at least 80% stocks.

I also have 16 and 14 year old kids who will presumably be going to college in a few years.

Oh and have a mortgage, refinanced last December. 2 point something percent.

Retired April 1,2022 at 52 years old and my asset allocation is 70/30. It could very well be 68/32, but in bear markets i tend not to look at our portfolio very often. In bull markets I look at it several times a week.

Age: 25
AA: 100 stocks (might go a bit higher with HFEA in the future).
Will have a pension.

Even in a high rate environment, I would rather light my money on fire than invest in bonds. At least burning money would provide me the benefit of warmth. Bonds would only give me a lower return on my assets and a higher tax liability.

Retired Air Force so one pension plus VA disability already. Spouse will retire from Space Force next year with another pension. I still work trying to fund the gap from 50 to 60 but honestly not sure how long I'll work. I do still enjoy it. Need to figure out a good landing path into my 60s though becuase we will have quite a bit of TSP/IRA/401K by then as well.
