A discussion in the movie thread motivated me to get out my Magnolia soundtrack CD. It's full of wonderful Aimee Mann songs.

Lots of The Economist podcasts.
I confess, ad-free has spoiled me for streaming, listening or looking.

Re: What are you listening to now
We've been on a serious Dmitri Hvorostovsk binge for the past couple of weeks. He was a Russian operatic baritone. We stumbled across a performance of his while searching on YouTube performances of other opera stars that we had been enjoying.
He is amazing, or I should say, he was amazing. He died tragically a few years ago at age 55 of a brain tumor.
He has a striking stage presence; his hair turned prematurely white in his 30's, and he rarely wore any wigs when performing, even when in costume.
This is a fun part of our opera lessons... finding new arias or duets that really capture us. so we can learn little snippets (or in some cases, merely *try* to learn ).
Here is a short duet from Rossini's Barber of Seville (Dunque io son from Il barbiere di Siviglia) that he sings with Sumi Jo:

The BBC reports Taylor Swift has become the first artist in history to claim every slot in the top 10 of the US singles chart.
Pleasant, but not the type of voice or music I prefer.

Nina Simone. In the last month I have noticed her music still being used in movies and TV.
First is "Lilac Wine" used in an episode of the Fox series "911":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LT38CIgRse4
Second is "July Tree" used in the opening sequence of the movie "Licorice Pizza":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1eoGz0v1oA
Last is "Feeling Good" which I seem to have listened to on a commercial(can't remember which product):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHs98TEYecM
For an artist that passed in 2003, I find it interesting that she still has an impact on the pop culture.

I somehow blundered through life completely unaware of Nina Simone. Sinnerman was used on a sound track (of a TV series, I think) several years ago and I was hooked. What a talent!

It is an outrage that she was inducted into the RnR HOF in 2018, should have been long time earlier.
I first heard her in Pete Townshend's Iron Man musical in the late 80s, which also features John Lee Hooker.

Re: What are you listening to now
Not sure how I missed it in The Thomas Crown Affair, but you got me searching the internet. I also apparently missed it in an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street which had a lot of outstanding music in their soundtracks. I'm guessing it hit me on an episode of The Blacklist. I'm just sorry I missed discovering Nina Simone for so may years. Apparently some of the voters for the RnR HOF inexplicably missed her as well.tenkuky wrote: ↑Mon Nov 07, 2022 6:49 amSinnerman was used in The Thomas Crown Affair.Doom&Gloom wrote: ↑Sun Nov 06, 2022 7:12 pm I somehow blundered through life completely unaware of Nina Simone. What do you think? I listened to the three advance songs and then to the album when it came out yesterday.Nicolas wrote: ↑Sat Nov 12, 2022 9:38 am Only the Strong Survive — Bruce Spingsteen’s new album of soul covers
It won't go on my list of favorites.
Different artist (Doh!) but I've listened a few times to Pink's new single Never Not Going To Not Dance Again. I like so much of her work and her voice.
I just looked at the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqYK79jCssA and it's fun and ups the song for me.
Re: What are you listening to now
I usually have to listen to an album 5-10 times to form my full impression. I have a soft spot for these old soul songs as they were played extensively on the radio during my formative years, same as Bruce I suspect. Some sound pretty good on first listen. I haven’t heard the whole album yet. Update: It doesn’t excite me much. I won’t play it very often.heartwood wrote: ↑Sat Nov 12, 2022 10:06 amWhat do you think? Re: What are you listening to now
The exception that proves the rule:
My rice cooker plays Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star when you start it, and Amaryllis when it's done cooking.
Start: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iJpOvbW6TQ
Done: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMN0jAENzIg
Apparently they did this to differentiate their appliance from all the other beeps in the kitchen. It really does get your attention.
-----
Back on track, I really enjoy the history of music, pop and rock mostly but others too, including music theory as well. It's delightful to listen to and watch some sites on Youtube like Rick Beato for pop and rock, others that break down scores or types of instruments. Any recommendations for similar classical, jazz, or "international" sites? I like having a good listen and discussion, but am not looking for overly-rigorous treatments leading to a degree.

Jude — Latest from Julian Lennon. Sounds something like his dad, but not as good. I wonder if he subconsciously imitates him. It’s painful to listen to, it sets my teeth on edge. He bumped into his “Uncle Paul” at Heathrow the other day and took this selfie.

I've been to two of her concerts, The Truth About Love and Beautiful Trama. We were fortunate to enjoy her Beautiful Trama tour stop before covid shut everything down.
She is an incredible performer, very physical in her performances (think "Glitter In The Air" At The 2010 GRAMMYs Show). I honestly can say her concerts were the best I have ever seen. I'm an old 70ties rocker, her genre isn't what I would typically be listening to.
I really wish she would do a blues album, she has the range for it, and it would be awesome, I believe. She has that magic huskiness that comes out every now and then.

A long time ago a reviewer wrote something to the effect that Julian Lennon sounded both too much like and not enough like his father. Julian certainly hasn't had an easy life, but he still has a nice "uncle," who wrote "Hey Jude" (working title "Hey Jules") to help comfort him.

Back when I was dipping my toes in the world of classical sacral works I ran into a Naxos CD called "Ave Maria: Sacred Arias and Choruses". Of the mutiple tracks were 3 by Hungarian soprano Ingrid Kertesi, that to my mind were outstanding. The first was "Ave Maria" by Donizetti:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2p1ETC ... A&index=12
The second was "Ave Maria" by Bach(arranged by Gounod):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRt7l8_8_F8
Last but not least is the famous Schubert "Ave Maria"(Ellens Gesang III):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4iPNgQWUmU
Naxos is a budget label, and although there are many fine recordings of these beautiful pieces, this album has a place in my heart especially the tracks by Ms. Kertesi.

Agreed. John treated Julian the same as his father treated him, he ignored him and basically disappeared from his life. You Know What I Mean wrote: ↑Tue Nov 15, 2022 6:39 pmA long time ago a reviewer wrote something to the effect that Julian Lennon sounded both too much like and not enough like his father.
