Don't forget to fall back.

Post by J G Bankerton »

I just noticed that one has to manually set the board time in one's profile.

You shouldn't need to do anything, this was resolved long ago, see viewtopic.php?p=2674970#p2674970, which I quote below. Note the timestamp.
Peculiar_Investor wrote: Sun Nov 01, 2015 7:06 pm It will change automatically, but only if you've correctly set your timezone in the User Control Panel. If you haven't updated your timezone setting since the forum upgraded to phpBB 3.1, then it won't work automatically.

To check, review your User Control Panel->Board preferences and look at the My timezone field. There are two values, the first drop-down box shows a guess (based on JavaScript) of your timezone and then you need to select a country/city pair from the second dropdown that reflects your location.

If it says America/Los Angeles (or something equivalent) then it is set correctly and daylight savings time changes will be handled automatically. If the second field says UTC-8, then it isn't set correctly.

Unfortunately with the forum software showing two values in My timezone it can be a bit confusing.

If you'd like to see an image of what it looks like, check out this post on FWF.

Thanks, I just corrected my time in my profile! It has been off an hour probably since joining. I didn’t realize I could fix it.

The time still doesn't display right for me on the main /index.php page. The time is correct inside posts and on the /forum/index.php page, but on the /index.php that I usually start with, it still displays a time stamp an hour earlier than my current EST.

LadyGeek has explained that one in viewtopic.php?p=4233190#p4233190 quoted below:
LadyGeek wrote: Wed Nov 28, 2018 3:17 pm The home page is working as it should, which is showing the time as US Central (no daylight savings correction).

Although you may be logged into the forum, the home page does not correct for the time zone set in your User Control Panel.
Walkure wrote: Wed Nov 28, 2018 12:57 pm Perhaps the disparity started when the US east coast went off daylight savings time, while the server stays at UTC-5 year-round?
edit: my profile has switched me to Atlantic time (UTC-4). Not sure when that happened, I'm sure it was originally set to Eastern.
The forum software adjusts your time zone automatically. If it still seems off by an hour, you can change the time zone in the User Control Panel --> Board preferences --> Edit global settings.

The home page is not connected to your control panel settings.

It doesn't correct for daylight saving time. That is why this thread is titled "Don't forget to fall back".
I had to click on a box that suggested standard time.

The board software (phpBB) does automatically adjust for daylight savings time if you set your User Control Panel->Board preferences correctly. This feature was introduced in phpBB 3.1, eons ago.

If that is not working for you then perhaps you could provide some further clarifying information to help troubleshoot. Where are you seeing an incorrect time? On www.bogleheads.org or www.bogleheads.org/forum? What are your settings in User Control Panel->Board preferences->My timezone (both fields)?

The time of my posts were an hour ahead. They were still oh daylight saving time.

What If I live in Arizona that doesn't do daylight saving time? Would I have to manually set it then?

No. If you set the second field in the My timezone setting to America/Phoenix then the board would know to apply the DST rules for Arizona, i.e. no DST.

I can't find Phoenix, I'm not sure of any place in Mountain Time. I found New York so I'm good.

Does the software know that only parts of Arizona don't do daylight saving time? The Indian reservations do spring ahead and fall back. This is now academic as I fixed my problem, I think. I was on the wrong time zone but that doesn't explain why it didn't change for daylight saving time. :confused

If you're finding America/New York and you're not finding America/Phoenix, then you need to ignore their "suggestion," and change your time zone from UTC-05:00 to UTC-07:00.

Of course, if you happen to live in Sells, Arizona--which is within the Tohono O'odham nation, which does observe daylight time--then I suppose you must fib and say you live in Boise.

OK got it, now I know I have to manually spring forward. :beer

The board software relies on the choices available from PHP: List of Supported Timezones. They've just built an interface over it that first guesses the UTC offset and then offers the second drop-down with the timezones that match the UTC.

If your specific timezone isn't in the list of Supported Timezones then you'll either find an equivalent one or manually adjust as you've discovered.

I think I have it figured out. The cities listed change depending on the UTC time difference one picks. There is a suggested UTC but wouldn't it be easer to pick the time zone or city and not have to know the difference between EDT and UTC. UTC; universal time coordinated? :confused

Glad to hear that you were able to resolve the problem.

Before phpBB implemented the change to automatically handle daylight savings time the user would have to manually enable/disable DST in their profile twice a year. It was a pain. I'll leave it to others to debate their UI implementation. Since you generally only have to set it once and forget it, I doesn't bother me too much, although as we've seen it can be a bit difficult to explain how to set it properly.

I'm still not sure it will work, I have to wait for EDT to find out. I assume if one sets the UTC instead of the time zone the time does not change? I think I 'v got it. :D

From everything I've read, the first part of the My timezone setting is a suggestion based on your current location/computer settings. That's the one with the UTC +/- x hours.

The important setting is the one below, where you pick your specific timezone from the dropdown list that is populated based on the suggested (or selected) setting, i.e. America/New York. That is the one that is stored in the database as part of your user profile and is used when the forum displays date and time information to you.
