Cigna Secure-Essential PDP - am I missing something?

Post by SoDakJeff » Sat Oct 19, 2019 8:44 am

I'm currently with Express Scripts Saver for my PDP, but I've been shopping around for a new plan. I came across the Cigna-HealthSpring Rx Secure-Essential that looked really good. I enrolled in the Cigna plan for 2020, but now I'm a little nervous.

I'm on 6 medications: 2 tier 1, 2 tier 2 and 2 tier 3. The premium for Express Scripts currently is $22 and it looks like that will stay the same for 2020.
Premium for Cigna is $22.20, but the total cost for premium + drug costs is only half of what Express Scripts has, even comparing preferred pharmacies. It's also at least half of any other plan available in my county. I meet the deductible for all other plans at some point in the year, but with Cigna I won't meet the deductible at all.

This seems almost too good to be true. How does Cigna cover my medication needs for at least half the cost of everybody else? I'm used to seeing competing plans with total costs being a lot closer that this. Am I overlooking something?

Just a guess ... there may be other medications that other patients need which they either do not cover, or cover with more restrictions or at a higher price than other plans.

If I'm right, you'll be ok if your medications stay the same. If your health changes and your prescriptions do too, who knows. You might try entering meds for other common conditions (maybe ask your friends the name of some of their meds, or do some googling) as a test.

As I said, just a guess. I don't know anything about the particular plans you are asking about.

This early in the cycle it might be an error. It usually takes awhile for the plans to get all the correct data into the system. Check it again in about a month. If it's wrong now, no problem. You're allowed to enroll in something else instead.
The surest way to know the future is when it becomes the past.
