VTI declares lower dividend for Q2 2019

Post by PhillyBird » Fri Jun 14, 2019 3:56 pm

VTI declares $0.5472 dividend payable on 06/20/2019. This is one of the lowest payouts in recent two year history. Is this a reason for concern that businesses inside VTI are slashing dividends? Or is it just a scheduling offset where VTI is yet to receive a chunk of dividends at end of June/early July, and will eventually catch up with the September distribution?

For example, distribution on 06/20/2018 a year ago was $0.603.

Personally, I wish the dividend went to $0.00 because it would save me a lot on taxes.

I'm glad to see it come down. Q1 for Total Stock Market was up ~35% over prior year so maybe there are some timing differences. I was a bit miffed that my tax bill was going to come in higher than I estimated but maybe not.

I second this, if they were able to get the dividends to zero, VTI would be the best hold for larger portfolios, especially those in a high State or Federal bracket.

For a Total Stock index Fund like VTI, it is not VTI call, how much is the dividend. If it is coming down, it is because underlying companies are paying less. It may be a good thing for those who want growth to come from appreciation.

The dividend is about a week earlier than last year's 2nd qtr dividend (depending on which date you use). Perhaps the accounting cut off date was enough earlier that some dividends normally distributed in the 2nd quarter will slip to the 3rd this year.

Know what else would save you lots of taxes in that scenario where underlying holdings dropped their dividend to zero? The huge capital losses you could realize. :sharebeer
