DNS or Hosting Issues?

Post by k3vb0t » Tue Jan 08, 2019 8:02 am

A few times per day I'm trying to refresh the main forum page and getting a "site cannot be found" error. Wasn't sure if it is happening to just me -- meaning something wrong with my internet provider or DNS -- or if there is something going on with BH from the hosting side.

Figured this was the best place to ask :sharebeer

I do not get the "site cannot be found" error very often, but got one this morning. I resubmitted a minute later and had no problem. Not sure where the glitch was.

I'm having the same problem with bogleheads.org but with no other web sites.

Okay, glad it's not just me. Has happened multiple times this morning including trying to respond to this post.

Hopefully forum admins can provide some insight into what's going on.

Clearly on the forum side. This happens to me on multiple different networks connected to separate ISPs.

You can always double check if the problem is the server using https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/bogleheads.org which will be independent of your network settings.

What DNS servers are you using? Over the past month or so I've noticed a couple of instances where bogleheads.org cannot be resolved by Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as your DNS servers) for short time frames but will resolve with other providers such as OpenDNS (208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220). This happened to me yesterday afternoon. So far I have not seen the problem this morning.

Interesting. I recently switch my home DNS from the Fios default to Quad9. At about the same time I started having intermittent problems reaching this forum through my wifi. I thought it was Quad9, but looks like some general issue related to domain name resolution.

I'm using Xfinity's standard DNS... to me it looks like Xfinity having problems, Google having problems, FIOS having problems... the odds are this is a BH issue and not a specific DNS provider issue. What are the odds that Xfinity, Google, and FIOS are all having issues?

I started getting that error again this morning, and discovered that I could work around it by stripping off the leading "www." from the URL. "bogleheads.org" would work when "www.bogleheads.org" would not.

DNS appears to have been broken, at least earlier:

;; ANSWER SECTION:
diehards.org. 24262 IN NS gs6.winux.com.
diehards.org. 24262 IN NS gs7.winux.com.

At that point gs6 could not resolve the domain, but gs7 could.

Currently:

;; ANSWER SECTION:
diehards.org. 1200 IN NS gs7.winux.com.
diehards.org. 1200 IN NS gs0.winux.com.

Both can resolve the domain. Oh, same for bogleheads, but old habits die hard with me.

FYI - mingstar (site owner and server admin) is aware of the DNS issue.

Acts fixed now. :)

Or maybe not.

Well even if it was fixed earlier, if the issue was the NS records, the TTL in the first example was sufficient that the changes might not propagate everywhere immediately.
