I got my federal taxes done at a local tax place, they were filed electronically in early April, and I owed $275. I discovered a mistake a couple of days later, went back to the preparer, he filled out a 1040x, so I owed only $200 then. I mailed the 1040x along with my check for $200 just before the deadline. The IRS just sent me a letter saying I underpaid by $75 so pay up plus a dollar fine. Should I pay up and wait for them to figure out the mistake and then send me the $75 back?
