RTP, NC Chapter Meeting 9:30 AM Sat April 23, 2016

Post by Steve Thorpe » Tue Mar 01, 2016 9:02 pm

Hello RTP Bogleheads®,

Meeting 26 of the Research Triangle Park Bogleheads® has been scheduled for 9:30 AM Saturday April 23, 2016.... see below for the logistical details. Please let me know if you plan to join us so I can plan accordingly for meeting room needs. Hope to see you there!

Location:
Bull City Coworking's Durham Location
112 S. Duke St.
Durham, NC 27701

Directions are here:
http://www.bullcitycoworking.com/parking/

Google Map is here:
http://goo.gl/maps/i0dk

There will probably be light munchies available such as bagels and OJ. Our agenda is flexible although I would recommend that we spend part of the meeting to discuss Dr. Bernstein's April 19 presentation to Dr. Tower's economics class. Perhaps if you've recently read any good investing books you could share an update, etc.

Just FYI, after most of the previous meetings I posted a short summary... in case these are of interest, please check towards the end of these topics:
Also FYI I set up a Master Thread for RTP, North Carolina Bogleheads Chapter forum topic that you may wish to subscribe to... I'll try to remember to post a reminder of future RTP Bogleheads meetings to that topic.

Finally for those local 'heads not already on the list, I set up a Yahoo "rtpbogleheads" email list for our local chapter. Please consider joining the list to help our chapter communications (see below for joining details). From the group's description:
Welcome to the yahoo group of the Research Triangle Park, North Carolina Area Bogleheads Chapter. The Bogleheads are an investing and personal finance interest group inspired by the example of Jack Bogle, the founder of the Vanguard mutual fund company.

This list is primarily to foster easy communications among our local chapter members, in particular regarding reminders and logistics on upcoming meetings which we hope to hold approximately quarterly. All are encouraged to continue use the national forum (bogleheads.org) for most postings.

Please stick to the spirit of the national chapter's forum policies and etiquette: basically, keep to investing topics and stay away from politics. Further details on posting etiquette can be found here: http://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=405

Initially this list will be configured to allow through all member postings in an un-moderated fashion, though adjustments may be made later as deemed appropriate by the list manager.

If you're interested to know of other local Boglehead chapters, please see the Google Map maintained by Mel Lindauer at http://www.lostsprings.com/diehards/chapters/

Thank you!

Hello RTP Boglehead friends,

Ed, Ben, Bruce, Carol, Catherine, Ben, Tiffany, Aaron, Nehal, Jim, Robert and I had another fun local chapter meeting yesterday at Bull City Coworking. Special thanks to Robert Petrusz for kindly allowing us to use the BCC space, and to Ed Tower for our OJ supply!

Some topics of discussion included:
  • Fidelity advisors - are they worth it? Probably not if you're a Boglehead.
  • Seeking returns through dividends vs. capital appreciation
  • "When should I sell?" is something that should be written down in your Investment Policy Statement
  • Financial intermediaries often take advantage of the end customer
  • Alternative investments
  • Jack Bogle's preference for domestically based stocks -- in his view explicit International allocation isn't needed since many profits of domestic companies come from international.
  • Various Boglehead authors including:
    • Jason Zweig
    • Dan Ariely
      Jack Bogle
    • Bill Bernstein
Thanks everyone for attending yesterday!! Not sure yet on exact details of our next meeting, but it will probably be around July or August somewhere in Durham. I'll post an announcement at least a few weeks beforehand.

All best.
Steve Thorpe
