madsinger monthly report (October 2015)

Post by madsinger »

Here is a big fat collection of portfolios, with their October 2015 returns, 2015 YTD return, and annualized returns since 1999, 2005, 2010 and 2012 (16 years 10 months, 10 years 10 months, 5 years 10 months, 3 years 10 months). I broke them into four categories, roughly corresponding to 100/0, 80/20, 60/40, 40/60 stock/bond portfolios, sorted by 10 year Total Return. The 3 fund is 50/30/20 Total Stock/Total Int'l/Total Bond. The s&d is 10 each of VFINX, VIVAX, NAESX, VISVX, VGSIX, 25 VGTSX, 5 VINEX, 20 VBMFX. The coffeehouse is a 60/40 described at The Coffeehouse Investor. The Newsletter portfolios are from a newsletter following Vanguard funds. William Bernstein's "Sheltered Sam" is an all stock portfolio which is 20% VFINX, 25% VIVAX, 5% NAESX, 15% VISVX, 10% VGSIX, 3% VGPMX, 5% each VEURX, VPACX, VEIEX, and 7% VTRIX. The madsinger portfolio is my real-world portfolio, roughly 50/6/11/33 stock/REIT/Gold/bond. The madsingerPP portfolio is the "permanent portfolio" portion of my portfolio consisting of 25% each of stock, long bond, cash, gold.

It's been while since I saw one of these reports. Thanks for keeping them updated. It looks like the newsletter portfolios are doing very well of late, perhaps they are low on international and EM, I haven't seen the composition of one of those lately.

Stocks had a big month in October, all rising strongly, and bringing most portfolio YTD returns positive again. Small stocks are still down a little YTD, so portfolios emphasizing these stocks are trailing a bit.

Permanent portfolio (returns listed above) had only its second positive month of the year (ignoring two virtually flat months). Three components are now slightly positive, and the -4.6% gold return keeps the portfolio slightly negative YTD.

Added to the wiki, see 2015 reports. Is 26 minutes after report posted a new record?

Thanks for your work on these. I look at them every month but rarely comment. I'm sure there are many others. Don't assume few comments means few are looking.

Thanks Brad. I look at these every month too but rarely post. Your hard work makes it easy for me to get a sense of how I'm doing in relation to other similar portfolios.

Thanks again.

Yes, another BH member who *always* looks carefully at your chart.

It is greatly appreciated.

A nice, quick overview of various strategies/approaches.

Many thanks :happy
