madsinger monthly report (October 2014)

Post by madsinger »

Here is a big fat collection of portfolios, with their October 2014 returns, 2014 YTD return, and annualized returns since 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2011 (15 years 10 months, 10 years 10 months, 5 years 10 months, 3 years 10 months). I broke them into four categories, roughly corresponding to 100/0, 80/20, 60/40, 40/60 stock/bond portfolios, sorted by 10 year Total Return. The 3 fund is 50/30/20 Total Stock/Total Int'l/Total Bond. The s&d is 10 each of VFINX, VIVAX, NAESX, VISVX, VGSIX, 25 VGTSX, 5 VINEX, 20 VBMFX. The coffeehouse is a 60/40 described at The Coffeehouse Investor. The Newsletter portfolios are from a newsletter following Vanguard funds. William Bernstein's "Sheltered Sam" is an all stock portfolio which is 20% VFINX, 25% VIVAX, 5% NAESX, 15% VISVX, 10% VGSIX, 3% VGPMX, 5% each VEURX, VPACX, VEIEX, and 7% VTRIX. The madsinger portfolio is my real-world portfolio, roughly 50/6/11/33 stock/REIT/Gold/bond.

Halfway through the month, stocks were down quite a bit, and bonds and gold were up. All that changed in the final week.

For the month, large cap US up +2% to +3%, small caps +4% to +5%. Internationals ranged from -2% to +2%.

REITs up 10%. VGPMX (precious metals and mining) down about -14% for the second month in a row. Gold (IAU) down -3% for the month.

As has often been the case the past five years...portfolios with the most stocks went up the most.

Pretty big spread of returns YTD:

US large about +10%
US Small, +5% to +7%
Int'l average out to flat
REITs up 25%
VGPMX down -15%
Bond (total bond) up 5%.

Where would I find the Newsletter CG portfolio breakdown? I stumbled on your post and am intrigued. Searches have been futile. Thanks in advance for any info.
