madsinger monthly report (April 2014)

Post by madsinger »

Here is a big fat collection of portfolios, with their April 2014 returns, 2014 YTD return, and annualized returns since 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2011 (15 years 4 months, 10 years 4 months, 5 years 4 months, 3 years 4 months). I broke them into four categories, roughly corresponding to 100/0, 80/20, 60/40, 40/60 stock/bond portfolios, sorted by 10 year Total Return. The 3 fund is 50/30/20 Total Stock/Total Int'l/Total Bond. The s&d is 10 each of VFINX, VIVAX, NAESX, VISVX, VGSIX, 25 VGTSX, 5 VINEX, 20 VBMFX. The coffeehouse is a 60/40 described at The Coffeehouse Investor. The Newsletter portfolios are from a newsletter following Vanguard funds. William Bernstein's "Sheltered Sam" is an all stock portfolio which is 20% VFINX, 25% VIVAX, 5% NAESX, 15% VISVX, 10% VGSIX, 3% VGPMX, 5% each VEURX, VPACX, VEIEX, and 7% VTRIX. The madsinger portfolio is my real-world portfolio, roughly 50/6/11/33 stock/REIT/Gold/bond.

A good month for bonds..okay for large cap stocks, not so good for small caps. REITs are now up over 13% for the year, so any portfolio holding them is helped out quite a bit.

I made a rather large shift in the madsinger portfolio this month. After reading about and studying the permanent portfolio for a few years, I decided to shift about a little under half of my portfolio that way. I sold my precious metals and mining fund and shifted some money to buy gold, or more precisely, the ETF IAU. I sold some short bonds and bought some long treasuries, and made a few other tweaks. Since I was already holding short bonds and plenty of stock, this did not have to get moved. I will still be showing my entire portfolio return in the madsinger portfolio on these charts, but may also start showing the PP part of my portfolio as well. I would either have to wait until next year to start showing it, or "simulate" the first 3-1/2 months of this year. I'm still thinking about it.

The madsinger portfolio is now about 50% stocks (35% US, 15% Int'l), 6% REIT, 11% Gold (IAU), and 33% Bonds (11% long, 22% short). Of course, there is no way of knowing at this time if this was the "right" thing to do, but I am comfortable with this decision, and will let you all know how it is going every month with these reports.

Wishing you all well,
Brad.

Nice report, thanks. I'll be interested to see how half your portfolio in the PP does. Not that I'll be changing anything. Still in LS G fund as sheer laziness has kept me there :D
