minnesota mtg... mar-8 - updated with pictures

Post by jeff mc » Sat Jan 12, 2008 6:00 pm

for any MN (& IA, WI) diehard interested, we're setting up next meeting for march-8 in bloomington. saturday, 12:00 start

we may have enough people to do break-out discussion groups after initial introductions. do you have any topics / agenda items that you want to discuss?

draft agenda...
1) “formal” intro your name, forum name (if applicable), what you want to get out of today’s meeting

2) breakout
2A) recent interesting diehard threads or polls
2B) changes you’re hoping to make in 2008
2C) steve showing his portfolio software

3) full group want do you want to learn in next 12 months?

4) breakout
4A) asset allocation reviews (%s only) bring 10 copies if you want to get peer reviewed
4B) leading pres. candidates views and how those views may affect our portfolios/economy
4C) financial metrics that you track for your household

5) full group the market so far in '08. where from here?

6) full group wrapup, next meeting timing / location / format

=========
other group discussion ideas (for third group, or as time allows)
- estate planning: wills, trusts, how set up? cost?
- tax mgmt for retirement accounts (401ks, roth IRAs, SEPs) vs. taxable accounts
- diversifying retirement accounts (roth? 401k? after-tax? 529s?)
- one concrete way diehards/bogleheads/vanguard have helped you out
- favorite / funny stories about investing
- your worst investing mistake
- ETFs. who is using them? why? how to select them?

Have there been previous chapter meetings in Minnesota? I'm new to the forum and would probably attend depending on agenda. No date preference.

peter:

our first mtg was march-2005. we've met 8 times. always on a saturday at 12:00 for lunch/discussion, somewhere in the metro. you can visit our blog http://mndiehards.blogspot.com/ for past agendas. we use a mailing list for mn-specific issues, mtg details, agendas, pictures, logistics, etc. if you want to be added to the MN mailing list, PM me or send email to mndiehards@comcast.net. (as well as anyone else reading this too, of course).

i hope you can make it... i always enjoy mtg new diehards!

Too bad I don't live in Minnesota. I'd like to go. I did date a girl from Minnesota at one time, though. But she lived in Buhl. Too far from the Twin Cities.

I'd like to attend - either date currently works for me, though the 8th is better.

I am new to this board and new to this Diehard group....but I am very excited to get to meet others who are further along than I am. I would like March 8th as a first choice, and March 1st as a second choice. Jeannine

March meeting

Post by chuck.lindberg@gmail.com » Fri Jan 18, 2008 12:47 pm

This will be my first meeting. I plan to attend. Either March 1 or 8th is OK for me. I'm just hunkered down for the winter waiting for spring and golf season.

I'd love to attend, if I'm able. March 8 works. March 1 is a challenge.

Thanks, and looking forward to meeting you! :D

if the discussion doesn't entice you, maybe the menu will... march-8, 12:00, major's in bloomington.

all midwest diehards welcome! (but let us know if you plan on attending, to be able to arrange tables and print out enough agendas).

excellent. see you tomorrow.

you can send an email to me at mndiehards@comcast.net and i'll add you to the MN mailing list, or just keep an eye on this forum for future meetings. that mailing list is used to send out map links, prompts for future topics/dates/locations, pictures of past meetings and minutes, etc.

ask for the diehard room.

great meeting both of you. hopefully, after a few more mtgs, you'll be considered grizzled veterans...
------

meeting minutes (...seconds)
attendees: 36
length: 2.5 hrs
topics: see above
format: 3 groups and 2 breakout sessions. thanks to walleye, a2z and sue for moderating each table. and thanks to steve for showing his sotftware and bringing the hardware
next meeting: july-ish
next location: woodbury-ish

pic of 2/3rds the group... other third not camera shy, but just had to leave after 2 hours. i have a new 22" lcd monitor, w/ 1600 x 1050 resolution, so i don't know how big these pictures are, but are probably way too wide to avoid scrolling issues... (but looked great on here)... i cropped down what i could.

Post by BogleNewbie8 » Sun Mar 09, 2008 3:22 pm

Thanks Jeff for the informative meeting....I learned I don't know very much....need to get better informed. It was nice realizing there are many people who are taking charge of their own financial well being. Onward and upward..... Jeannine

MN Diehards

Post by Mel Lindauer » Sun Mar 09, 2008 3:32 pm

Hi Jeff:

Thanks for sharing! What a great group you've got there. Thirty-six attendees is awesome, especially considering the winter weather. (We only had 20-something at Diehards I in Miami!)

Keep up the good work. All the very best to all the MN Diehards.

Best regards,

Mel

That 5 dollar tip on the table in the first pic had to been a new member, an old diehard sitting there it would have been a buck.
