Any Suggestions?--Deceased Father's 1099 from SSA
Any Suggestions?--Deceased Father's 1099 from SSA
My father passed away in 2024. The only tax document we're missing is the 1099 from Social Security. I can't log in as him, unless I risk violating the law. I'm not sure it would work anyway. The wait times on the 1-800 number are consistently over 2 hours. The only way to make an appointment at the local office, apparently, is to call the 1-800 number, where the wait times are consistently over 2 hours. There's no place I've found to schedule a call back. Does anyone have any suggestions for getting a duplicate 1099 for a deceased person?

I've gone to my local social security office a couple times. I always arrive at 3. They close at 4. There has never been more than 2 other people in the waiting area. If I were there bright and early at 9, I'd be waiting for 5 hours without an appointment.

If you know the amount of his SS check and the number of payments received you can calculate the amount that is taxable. Just take the total received and add the medicare premium. There may be a small death benefit to include. You would not need the 1099 if you have all the information.

assuming the med part d premium (if any) isn't also coming out of SS.sport wrote: Tue Mar 11, 2025 9:28 pm If you know the amount of his SS check and the number of payments received you can calculate the amount that is taxable. Just take the total received and add the medicare premium.
It's hard to accept the truth when the lies were exactly what you wanted to hear. Investing is simple, but not easy. Buy, hold & rebalance low cost index funds & manage taxable events. Asking Portfolio Questions |

Wouldn't SSA be withholding taxes? How would I know that amount?sport wrote: Tue Mar 11, 2025 9:28 pm If you know the amount of his SS check and the number of payments received you can calculate the amount that is taxable. Only if you specifically ask for it. I can't find any statistics but it has to be incredibly rare.cdc wrote: Tue Mar 11, 2025 9:32 pmWouldn't SSA be withholding taxes? As others have pointed out, you can figure it from the bank deposits.
The executor can get a copy from the Social Security Administration.
The executor can also get a transcript from the IRS showing the income reported against the decedent's Social Security number.

Does the government not issue a 1099 for a deceased person?
Surely they know the people handling the final tax return will need it.

Re: Any Suggestions?--Deceased Father's 1099 from SSA
I had the same experience. My wife passed away in April 2024 and realized I never saw her 1099 for 2024.
On Thursday 2/20/25, I called SSA at 8:30 am. I just checked my call log, the call lasted 75 minutes total.
I follow the suggested...
Wait times to speak to a representative are typically shorter early in the day (between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. local time) or later in the afternoon (between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. local time). We are also less busy later in the week (Wednesday to Friday) and later in the month.
I had to answer some security questions for my late wife and myself and they said they would mail a duplicate 1099. They said to allow 15 business days. I asked what may have happen to the original and they blamed USPS.
I received the 1099 in the mail on 2/28/25. It was mailed 2/24/25.
Unrelated, the Pitney Bowes postage meter stamp on the first class letter size envelope with 4 pages was $5.54!!! I realize it's maybe a "same pants different pocket" situation. I suspect an unintended fat fingered error.

Thanks, everyone. I was able to go to his bank with his death certificate and proof of my appointment as his personal representative. They printed me all of his deposits for 2024. We should be set!bsteiner wrote: Tue Mar 11, 2025 9:56 pm As others have pointed out, you can figure it from the bank deposits.

Here is something you might consider as a supplement if unsure what the bank deposits are telling you about the monthly benefit. If you have the 2023 tax return or SSA-1099, and there were no other events in 2023 or 2024 that would have changed the monthly benefit, you should be able to determine the 2024 monthly benefit by applying the COLA for 2024 (3.2%, variously described as for December 2023 or January 2024) to the 2023 benefit amount.
If looking at bank records, don't forget to look for any clawback of the benefits paid for month in which he died (paid the month after he died, I think) and later. I think one is entitled to the benefit only if alive at month-end, although I don't recall exactly how that works.
I don't recall whether it has come up in this discussion, but there is a small lump-sum benefit payable to a survivor (e.g. spouse), $255, same for last 70 years, as I recall. I would think that for tax purposes, it counts a payment to the survivor, not the decedent.

DW & I both have taxes withheld & supplemental insurance premiums deducted from our monthly benefits.

But his DFAS 1099-R (Retired Military) was a different story, that required jumping thru many many hoops.

I volunteer and do income taxes for low income Seniors in an IRS/AARP Program. I am in my 11th year now and I would say between 5% and 10% of Social Security recipients that I see have Federal Income taxes withheld from their SS payments.

Don't forget to add in his Medicare part b premiums which were deducted before sending his payments. (Assuming he was on Medicare)
