And here’s the same song by The Band (1983).
Ha! Never knew the Band did that! (But that was after the big break-up.)

I always thought the New Riders did an outstanding version of that tune. From 1972's Powerglide, here's NRPS doing it justice:

Willie and the Hand Jive · New Riders Of The Purple Sage · Powerglide

Except for the extended jamming and the pedal steel work (RIP Buddy Cage), it's surprising how true to the original they stayed. Brought in Nicky Hopkins to bang away on the keys. I had never really sat down and listened to the original version by Otis before.

Well, as long as I was there, listened to one of Dave Torbert's contributions to the album:

Contract · New Riders Of The Purple Sage · Powerglide

I really like those guys.

I've been exploring a certain melody that goes way back in time. Something like Kassler -> Bach -> Simon, and probably other stops in between.

20th Century Masters - The Millenium Collection - Best of Rare Earth
The album clocks in at just over 69 minutes with just 7 songs, one being over 21 minutes in length. I Just Want to Celebrate and Get Ready (Radio cut) are probably their best known songs.

Wow. Just found this *relatively* recent NRPS album form 2012. Very inconsistent, IMHO, but at least a couple of these tunes are really good. Definitely no nostalgic "oldies act!" As a rabid fan of their early days, I can attest that this lineup has stayed surprisingly true to the form and feeling of the original band of over 50 years ago. Buddy Cage sounds great. Lots of Hunter/Nelson songs. More than one sounds more than a little reminiscent of later Bobby D. lyrics.

These two are my favorites:

Prisoner of Freedom · New Riders Of The Purple Sage · 17 Pine Avenue - 2012

Fivio · New Riders Of The Purple Sage · 17 Pine Avenue - 2012

Nice three hour program of unexpected/unknown (to me) Rolling Stones covers. 8-)

Live With Me -- The Swinging Steaks

Ha! Saw the Swinging Steaks once at a dive in New London, CT with a friend who liked them a lot. Not my typical style, but they do a fine cover of Live With Me. (Starts at 30:00 minutes into Hour 2.) You really don't come across these guys very often!

Some killer guitar solos from Mick Taylor on Sway, with Carla Olson, whom I have never heard of. Starts at ~ 20:00 minutes of hour 1. I think this is the performance, from a live album: Sway · Carla Olson and Mick Taylor · Live - Too Hot For Snakes - 2011/12

 One of the best tunes from Sticky Fingers, it's almost cheating to call this a cover, with Taylor's guitar work sounding so much like the original studio version. But he jams on for several minutes here. A real treat.

One of the first times I've liked an original song just as well the electro-swing version. :thumbsup

Barbara Stanwyck, (vocals: Martha Tilton), Gene Krupa & His Orchestra - Drum Boogie]

Swing Republic - Drum Boogie (feat. Gene Krupa)

The movie appears to be "Ball of Fire" (1941).

Yup, Krupa is on fire here.

That’s nice. Here’s something I didn’t know: Perkins was one of the last surviving bluesmen to have known Robert Johnson.

How about Hubert Sumlin’s Made in Argentina? Another old bluesman.

Coincidentally, I just pulled up to play from my library the 1975 Muddy Waters Woodstock Album, and noticed that Pinetop Perkins plays piano on it.

The Muddy Waters Woodstock Album - 1975

As a matter of fact, the whole band is great:

Personnel:
Muddy Waters – vocals, guitar
Garth Hudson – organ, accordion, saxophone
Paul Butterfield – harmonica
Bob Margolin – guitar
Pinetop Perkins – piano
Howard Johnson – saxophone
Fred Carter Jr. – bass, guitar
Levon Helm – drums, bass

Sounds a whole lot like the Fathers and Sons album. Come to think of it, looking at the personnel, it's really a continuation of that theme.

It's hard for me to specify a favorite Traffic album, but I can say I am very fond of JBMD, and really all of them up to and excluding When The Eagle Flies, although to be fair I haven't listen to that one much. Low Spark is like a steak dinner. So good. The live albums are a treat.

Really funny to hear Aerosmith do a cover of a 60's girls' group (Shangri-Las) song. The audio link below is the best because you can hear the chorus -- Remember...Walking in the sand...Remember. Tyler plays it with touching emoting ( :D) til the end with when he starts his usual screaming.

Aerosmith - Remember (Walking In The Sand)

But the video below has him in in a 2008 performance with his daughter doing some of the singing. She looks just like him. :D No screams in that version. But it's followed by a live performance from 1980 where the scream is back again.

And these three men made a solemn vow
John Barleycorn must die
They've plowed, they've sown, they've harrowed him in
Threw clods upon his head
And these three men made a solemn vow
John Barleycorn was dead

They've let him lie for a very long time, 'til the rains from heaven did fall
And little Sir John sprung up his head and so amazed them all
They've let him stand 'til Midsummer's Day 'til he looked both pale and wan
And little Sir John's grown a long long beard and so become a man
They've hired men with their scythes so sharp to cut him off at the knee
They've rolled him and tied him by the way, serving him most barbarously
They've hired men with their sharp pitchforks who've pricked him to the heart
And the loader he has served him worse than that
For he's bound him to the cart

They've wheeled him around and around a field 'til they came onto a pond
And there they made a solemn oath on poor John Barleycorn
They've hired men with their crabtree sticks to cut him skin from bone
And the miller he has served him worse than that
For he's ground him between two stones

And little Sir John and the nut brown bowl and his brandy in the glass
And little Sir John and the nut brown bowl proved the strongest man at last
The huntsman he can't hunt the fox nor so loudly to blow his horn
And the tinker he can't mend kettle or pots without a little barleycorn
When a man loves cats, I am his friend and comrade, without further introduction. — Mark Twain

I was reading about a band called Ultimate Spinach and read this:

Bruce-Douglas says that he named the band based on experiences in an acid trip: "One day, in 1967, I was in my room, tripping on some really pure LSD. I started looking at myself in the mirror and my face was doing funny things. I had a bunch of colored markers I used to draw with. I grabbed a green one and started drawing all these psychedelic designs on my face. When I was done, I looked at myself and said 'Whoa! I am ultimate spinach. Ultimate spinach is me!

They were from Boston and were a psychedelic band from the late 60's. I tried listening to their music and not my cup of tea is all that came to mind
I bought their two records when they came out and liked them. Have not heard either of them for many decades.

A quite underrated band. I assume they are not in the Rock Music Hall of Fame? Probably should not be. But probably more deserving than:

A) Bands I never heard of
B) Bands who never played a rock note
C) Bands who are both

Calhoon wrote: Sun Mar 09, 2025 11:22 am Abba isn't my my favorite by any stretch of the imagination, but I think it would be ridiculous to argue that Abba isn’t the 2nd best band of 20th century. A lot of people write them off as disco, but weirdly they put out just as many disco songs as the stones or the grateful dead. The only problem I have with them is they invented the 80s (which really isn’t their fault that everyone was copying what they were doing but for music the 80’s was not a fun time). Even Led Zeppelin was trying to copy their sound more like Abba on In through the Out Door

The singing was so good everyone accused the girl’s vocals of being all studio because no human could sound so sweet, until they showed up live, and it turned out they really were that good. Benny is an underrated keyboardist, and the lyrics can be goofy at times but that’s because this is their 7th language and in swedish Super Trouper is probably less lame than it is in English. At least that’s what I tell myself. Regardless, when want to they can write lyrics that might not quite hit the Tom Waits level but make no doubt about it these guys do write lyrics better than your favorite band. Often, the song comes across as happy but you listen to the words you realize it’s depressing as hell. For example, the line about the kids in Knowing Me, Knowing You gets me.

The thing that gets me is that their songwriting is so powerful it could be a military grade weapon. No one before, since, or ever have written such incredibly well-crafted songs. Listen to Take a Chance all the way through and it' will still be running through your head 3 days laters. This is a true story. I was down in some gift shop in Sante Fe Mexico and there were about a dozen people in the store and Dancing Queen came over the PA. The lady next to me started humming along, and out of curiosity I went down the aisles and every single person in that store was singing along, humming, swaying a little, or otherwise impacted. Everyone. And we’re talking an age range of a 60 year time span. Now tell me what other song would do that to even a quarter of those people there? Not even the Beatles could write a song a fraction as catchy (and jon Lennon had allegedly said as such). Think about that, A song written 50 years ago reached through time and turned everyone in that store into a puppet for the duration of that song. That’s pretty freaking strong songwriting skills.

Vinhy – what are you talking about with a drum machine? They were historical significant for their synth use, but I always thought their drumming was acoustic.
"but I think it would be ridiculous to argue that Abba isn’t the 2nd best band of 20th century."

Extremely easy. I've consumed an enormous of amount of music in the last 60 years. Had never knowingly heard them until last week.

The drum machine comment? They sounded produced, ingenuine. Not real instruments.

I did miss seeing the Yardbirds play when they played at an amusement park I used to go to.

I also later read that Jeff Beck was not going on stage to play that show until he was convinced by one of the Rhode Island local Mafia that it was in his best interests to do so.

But a Great band. Are they in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame??

Johnny Burnette did a good version.
Indeed.

Either you or someone else had put it here recently.

Just as good now listening to it now as when I did then.

I remember the band but not having listened to them in (more than) 55 years I don’t remember the music. I’ll check them out again! Okay I’ve heard their first album which is supposed to be their best. These are Bostonians trying to copy the San Francisco sound of that time, not too successfully. Some of these songs are embarrassingly pretentious but a few others aren’t half-bad. I probably won’t listen to it much. I prefer Os Mutantes “The Mutants” of the same era from Brazil.
I think that even at the time we somewhat thought of them as somewhat of a contrived band. Trying to fulfill a music role.

I'm surprised but should not be to see their records available on YouTube.

Looking at the song titles I think I do remember Funny Freak Paradge.

Listening to the first song - Ego Trip - I can see why I did like them when they came out.

Aha, that answers it. It’s a lovely song. I’ve been familiar with it since its release but never examined the lyrics. Jethro Tull covered it to good effect, as well as many others.

Great song. His first record / soundtrack was quite good!.

However, while he was an excellent musician not much of his music after the first one was liked by me.

The album clocks in at just over 69 minutes with just 7 songs, one being over 21 minutes in length. I Just Want to Celebrate and Get Ready (Radio cut) are probably their best known songs.
Always liked them. Saw the ex-guitarist of a band I'd managed (we threw him out) play in his next band as an opener for them.

I love this duo, and I've been hoping they'd put out another album to follow up Counting Down the Hours from 2022.

Glad to have found this new album just in time for St. Patrick's Day. From last October:

Wow! That was a big-time find for MY music taste! Will be listening to it at least once. Maybe more. Thanks again!

There is a guitarist who lives in my area. He's quite good and was actually Van Morrison's guitarist when he was only 17 years old. Also, knew James Taylor.

He also wrote a book which tells all about the above and more and which I read but not finding it searching all over for it, including here.

https://www.johnsheldon.com/

I think he most recent achievement was writing a song that was on James Taylor most recent release.

I'm also remembering my first meeting of John was when he played basketball with us. As good a guitarist he is .. that is how bad a basketball he was. Even worse than me!

But back to Steely Dan.

He was watching one of our softball games and I talked to him. He told me he was in the studio just observing Steely Dan making their first record.

He said that they were such perfections doing the songs over and over and over and over again until perfect that for him it drained all the joy out of the music that they were playing.
