What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Monsters vs Aliens - Animated film about a girl who unexpectedly grows super big due to a meteor and joins several monsters to stop an alien invasion. I wouldn't put it quite up there with the best animations like most of what Pixar has done, but it's a fine, fun, family-friendly movie IMO

Same here, but it seemed to be a movie that you watched at 2 AM when nothing else was on. Not bad, but the end of the movie was a bit unclear on what happened.tenkuky wrote: Tue Mar 11, 2025 7:55 am The Limey (1999)
On Amazon Prime.
A Steven Soderbergh movie with an interesting flash-back flash-forward style and an amazing performance by Terence Stamp.

Kevin Kline won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in that movie.littlerfish wrote: Mon Mar 03, 2025 9:49 am A Fish Called Wanda - 1988. Streamed on Criterion Cnannel.
Charles Crichton directs Jamie Lee Curtis, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Kevin Kline, and Tom Georgeson in a comedy about a gang of thieves each scheming to possess some stolen diamonds.
One of those comedies where the whole cast comes together and amplifies the script, which is sparked with a bit of Pythonesque nitwittery. Curtis is luminous, with a great smile, as she beguiles all the male members of the gang, as well as the barrister played by Cleese. Palin stutters his way through the role as he tries to eliminate a witness. Kline is tremendous as the dim-witted but deft ex-CIA man, and Cleese plays the straight man and lets the others revolve around his role.

Tin Men - 1987. Streamed on Prime Video.
Barry Levinson directs Danny DeVito, Richard Dreyfus, and Barbara Hershey in this comedy about two feuding aluminum-siding salesmen in 1963 Baltimore.
This is a delightful movie. One of Levinson's Baltimore movies, it's entirely character driven. No hit men anywhere. DeVito's Ernest Tilley meets Dreyfus's BB Babowsky when Babowsky accidentally backs his new Cadillac off the lot and into Tilley's Cadillac. Tilley retaliates. BB decides to seduce Tilley's wife, Nora (Hershey). Events ensue!
One of those unsung gems, I think.

That documentary on Rick James. It was interesting. He really paved the way for a lot of people. He fought for himself, but it ended up being for them in the end. Personal issues aside, kind of an unsung hero.

The Hunger Games - Dystopian world, gladiator-style combat thing. After 30-40 mins of an uninteresting movie and characters, I gave up. Supposedly a good film; I'll never know for sure but didn't get that impression at all.

Saw the movie last night and loved it. Great for animal lovers but it transcends that in a big way.yankees60 wrote: Sun Mar 09, 2025 12:53 pmOver 50 years ago I was accused of worshiping cats. It was interesting for sure, I wouldn't say I was blown away while watching it.. however, I've been thinking about it ever since, which is the mark of great art. I think it's the type of film that holds a mirror up, and you get out of it whatever you put into it; everyone's experience will be different.
Anyway, if you have an emotional side for animals and can tolerate being in a space with no dialogue for an hour and a half, I would recommend it![]()
Saw the movie and loved it! It was an emotional experience for me seeing that cat so many times in danger.
Loved the lack of dialogue. You could just sit back and experience the film without having to pay close attention to details like one often does with films.
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
And don't have to use close captions. Drives me nuts when I have to do that with a film spoken in English because people are mumbling.roamingzebra wrote: Thu Mar 13, 2025 1:40 pm Loved the lack of dialogue. Thief - 1981. Streamed on Criterion Channel.
Michael Mann directs James Caan, Tuesday Weld, Jim Belushi, Robert Prosky, Dennis Farina, and Willie Nelson in this tale of a thief who achieves his lifetime dreams only to have to tear it all down again.
Mann is fascinated with heisters, big-time thieves robbing big-time scores. In this movie, Caan's thief is putting together his dream life, finding a wife (Weld) and getting his mentor and surrogate father out of prison. He promises a Chicago mobster that he'll do one more score, then retire. But after that score, a jewel robbery in L. A., he finds out the mobster isn't going to let him go. And he realizes he's violated his prime directive: don't get attached. There's a wild action finish where he has to tear his life to pieces and go after the mobster.
Belushi is his right-hand man, Prosky the mobster, Nelson the mentor, and Dennis Farina, a one-time Chicago detective, plays a heavy. These seem like real characters, and we can see what they're trying to do with their lives.
Mann's first feature film, and it's a knock-out. Score by Tangerine Dream, maybe not their best, but it fits.
I like it a lot.

The Time Machine (1960) starring Rod Taylor, Yvette Mimieux and Alan Young. Directed by George Pal. Based on the 1895 novella by H.G. Wells.
Post-apocalyptic sci-fi film made on a tight budget in just 29 days. It's a little campy and the costuming for the Morlocks could have been better, but I enjoyed Rod Taylor in his role as the time traveler, H. George Wells, and the movie can be enjoyed with the whole family (rated G).

I loved the way that movie started out, but didn't care for the Morlocks middle part. The 70s remake similarly started out strong but then fell apart less than half-way through.

Heat - 1995. Streamed on Criterion Channel.
Michael Mann directs Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore, Amy Brenneman, Diane Venora, Ashley Judd, Wes Studi, Mykelti Williamson, and Ted Levine in this cops-and-robbers thriller about an LAPD Major Crimes honcho going after a high-end thief.
This is the culmination of Mann's obsession with the Chicago detective Chuck Adamson's pursuit of heister Neil McCauley in the 1960's. He wrote the script in 1979, couldn't get it made, made Thief instead in 1981, which told one side of the story, then produced Adamson's TV series Crime Story in the 1980's, which featured Dennis Farina as a dedicated detective trying to take down a high-end criminal, then got the script produced as a TV movie in 1989, L. A. Takedown, and THEN remade that movie as this one.
Pacino as a L. A. robbery-homicide detective lieutenant Hanna is called to the site of an armored car robbery, with three dead guards. He sees the indicators of a careful plan and decides to take the case. De Niro is the heister Neil, with Kilmer and Sizemore as the trusted members of his crew, and is furious that the temp, Waingro, he'd signed on for the caper had shot the guard. Neil plans to kill the guy, but a passing police cruiser lets him escape. And then there's a cat-and-mouse game between Neil and Hanna. At one point they even sit down and have coffee and talk. There's a furious downtown shoot-out with automatic weapons after a bank robbery, and a slick climax at an airport hotel. Brenneman, Venora, and Judd are the wives and girlfriends caught up in all of this, and Natalie Portman plays Pacino's deeply unhappy step-daughter.
Fairly operatic; it goes on and on, for almost three hours. But engrossing. A great deal of the time is spent on the relationships between the characters, punctuated with action sequences. I liked it a lot.
Recommended.

Rule Breakers, in the local movie theater.
An amazing true story of the girls robotics competition team from Afghanistan and all the obstacles they overcame to built their robot and travel and compete in the international competitions.
There's a heartbreaking scene in which the main character, Roya, is in her elementary school classroom on the day that two computers arrive for their class. All the girls were sent out to the hallway while the boys learned about computers.
The United States is not perfect, but being born here is a huge privilege and a gift. The movie reminded me to feel grateful for this.

The Electric State on Netflix. Overall this wasnt a good movie but I did think it was visually interesting. I was shocked to see this was a Russo Bros film after how good their MCU movies were but it wasnt as good a script, nor were the lead actors very good. I'd still give it a watch since I liked the visuals.

Not that long ago I put up one of those bird feeder suction cup things on the window in this bedroom facing East. In the 43 years I've own this house had never prior had any kind of bird feeder. Enjoying them when the use it.
One of the other motivations for doing it was for entertainment for my three cats. Which it has turned out to be, especially for the one who I call My Athlete. She is extremely athletic jumping up to the other side of the window where the bird feeder is attached. Most the birds do not seem bothered by her being there.

I remember it as pretty cheesy. I'd read the novel several times before I saw the movie, and I saw it on television, so YMMV. I did see it again, years later, in a real theater, the Stanford in Palo Alto. My date picked it, and I think we were actually there to see the second feature. Still cheesy.Nicolas wrote: Thu Mar 13, 2025 9:26 pmA great film. I first saw it in 1960 and was absolutely spellbound. George Pal, a Hungarian producer somewhat famous for his somewhat racist 1930's Puppetoons featuring Jasper, directed it, one of a handful of movies he directed himself instead of hiring someone else to direct. This is the guy who brought you When Worlds Collide and the terrible War of the Worlds from the 1950's.
And not a great start for Yvette Mimieux's film career, which went back and forth for years until she achieved what is apparently the pinnacle of success for an actor: she got to play a hit man. In a TV movie she wrote herself which ABC decided to call "Hit Lady". Now I have to find a copy of that!
If I was going to be forced to watch a cheesy sci-fi flick, I'd pick This Island Earth from 1955, starring the always reliable Jeff Morrow and Faith Domergue, along with ludicrous aliens and flying saucers.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Curious. My belief is that when discussing a movie, one should not give away the ending or key plot "twists" etc since it's almost impossible for a reader to know when they're coming ahead of time and it can easily ruin the movie for them. The writer might have complete freedom to write whatever they want but that doesn't mean they should exercise it; to do so IMO is frankly inconsiderate/rude. Anyway -yankees60 wrote: Sun Mar 16, 2025 9:16 am My belief in any public forum is that the burden is on the reader to avoid reading anything thing that could be a spoiler for that reader. The Homesman - Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank co-star in a western about two Nebraska frontier people who plan to take three (literally) crazy frontier women to a church in Iowa to be cared for. I thought what the movie was trying to do seemed like a new angle on the old west and had potential, so made it half-way through. Mistake. It never got better and it made Schindler's List look like Mary Poppins. At least the former had something redeeming and worthwhile about it. This was nothing but darkness and gloom piled on truckloads more just for the sake of it with IMO no interesting or likable characters or even happenings in any way.

A great film. I first saw it in 1960 and was absolutely spellbound. I also saw Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959) in the same theater at around the same time. These young eyes loved that one too.

Could also be my distaste for George Pal, a schlockmaster who specialized in making cheap and fast adaptations of out-of-copyright properties. He'd be working for Netflix today, you betcha! I mean, War of the Worlds without tripods? Or, could be that my library had a book, "Seven Novels of H. G. Wells", which I read and re-read. Included "The Time Machine" and "War of the Worlds". Pal's movies didn't compare well. There still hasn't been a decent adaptation of "War of the Worlds", though the Spielberg version wasn't terrible; at least he had tripods. But I'd like to see one properly set in Victorian England, as the novel was.Nicolas wrote: Sun Mar 16, 2025 11:53 amI think you must’ve been a bit older than I was when I first saw it on the big screen in 1960. Well, yes it is, but the focus is on her attempt to break out of that life - not to provide a spoiler.

I’ve always had high regard for Pal but I’ve been confusing him with Ray Harryhausen who dazzled with his dueling skeletons in The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958), and many others. Both were stop-action animation pioneers.littlerfish wrote: Sun Mar 16, 2025 12:05 pmCould also be my distaste for George Pal, a schlockmaster who specialized in making cheap and fast adaptations of out-of-copyright properties. Also before I lose my chance I would like to say that Yvette Mimieux had the best name for a starlet there ever was. And it was her real name.

I understand your feeling on that long-ago day, though. For me it was the Disney 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which I must have seen in a theater in 1963? Just based on Disney's re-release schedule. Not a faithful rendition of the novel, but enthralling to me at the time.

Saw this today, included on Amazon Prime.LadyGeek wrote: Sun Mar 24, 2024 7:24 am Poor Things, $5.99 rental on Amazon Prime, rated R, 2023, comedy / drama / romance. The incredible tale about the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter.
One of the most bizarre movies I've seen in quite some time. All I could think of was "Stanley Kubrick meets Frankenstein". Very good production quality and acting. The use of colors in the scenes was excellent. Very different - it's "out there". This is a film that critics would love, but some viewers may not. This movie won several awards.
Dissonant score, peculiar cinematography, luxurious set design and a fantastic Oscar-winning performance by Emma Stone.
Not for everyone, but for those who enjoy the art of movie-making, this is a tour de force. I loved it

I come from a background in baseball emails where the norm was we were supposed to put "spoiler" in the subject line if we were discussing a game.gunny wrote: Sun Mar 16, 2025 11:43 amCurious. I always thought the needs of a few unnecessarily made it a burden on all. Someone called me dangerous because I openly discussed a World Series game two days after it had been played. I thought it was some quint custom somehow accepted by all but me.
There have been times when I've not seen a game live and want to watch it later. I believe it's fully up to me to not go anywhere where I I might see the results prior to watching / listening to the game. They are my needs and up to me to meet my needs ... not everyone for else to cater to my needs.
That said whenever I'm watching a movie or TV show I want maximum surprise. So I only want to see the bare minimum to determine if I want to see it. Maybe a few sentences maximum. But, again, it's solely on me to determine what I choose to read. Only read Wikipedia entries on TV shows and movies AFTER I have seen them.

As I said I was 9 years old as were my friends who saw it with me (for 35 cents per ticket). We all loved it!Nicolas wrote: Sun Mar 16, 2025 11:53 amI think you must’ve been a bit older than I was when I first saw it on the big screen in 1960. Had to check. That $0.35 then is $3.77 now. What is now the range of costs for a 9-year-old for a Saturday afternoon movie? I remembered thinking that 11 years old was a great age to be because we were still only charged 35 cents as opposed to the 50 cents once we hit 12 years old. So, at 11 years old I was already SUPER money conscious!

Watched "Bonnie & Clyde" (1967) last night, which stars photogenic Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty as the leads. Gene Hackman joins them as Clydes's brother. Great movie and somehow the production values look good, not like the usual 1960's fare.

I saw the film in 1967, the ending was shocking. And the leads in this film were way better looking than the real people. You wonder why they turned to crime with looks like thatroamingzebra wrote: Sun Mar 16, 2025 2:42 pm Watched "Bonnie & Clyde" (1967) last night, which stars photogenic Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty as the leads. Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Ball games and movies are not at all comparable. The former are far more time-sensitive/relevant. Almost everyone interested in a ball game sees it when it happens because it's all about live action. Movies are not. Perhaps an extreme few record a game and watch it a day or two later at most. Movies on the other hand are only seen by a tiny minority of people the day it comes out and are often seen by a great many weeks, months, even years after it's come out. I don't see being considerate by not giving away the ending or key aspects of a movie a burden - it's quite easy not to mention that.yankees60 wrote: Sun Mar 16, 2025 2:30 pm I come from a background in baseball emails where the norm was we were supposed to put "spoiler" in the subject line if we were discussing a game.

Yeah, Michael J. Pollard was great. I had never heard of him which is why my lack of mention.Nicolas wrote: Sun Mar 16, 2025 2:50 pmI saw the film in 1967, the ending was shocking. Moss with Dub Taylor playing his father, who I always like to see, a great character actor. He always had a Cajun accent in his roles which I think must’ve been his real manner of speaking, he used it so much.
The only character I didn't like was Blanche, played by Estelle Parsons, who was extremely annoying. But that was the point, I guess.
