Problem importing Vanguard 1099 into TurboTax

Post by Richard1580 »

Has anyone had problems getting TurboTax to import 1099 data from Vanguard?

When prompted by TurboTax, I enter in the account number and document ID from the 1099 form, but I get an error,
"The import was unsuccessful. There isn't any tax-related info to import right now."

This worked fine last year and a call to Vanguard did not produce a solution, although they did file a trouble ticket.

Worst case scenario is I have to enter the information in manually (not a big problem), but TurboTax says I will also have to mail in the 1099 to the IRS. It was suggested (by Vanguard) that there may be a way to upload the 1099 to TurboTax, but I do not see any such option.

I was curious if anyone else has encountered this problem. Thanks.

IIRC it imported my 1099-DIV ok but refused to import my 1099-R from my Roth conversion.

Why would TurboTax say you have to mail the 1099 to the IRS? The IRS already has this information. I always enter my 1099s manually and TurboTax never has an issue with it.

I seem to recall that the spaces in the credentials to enter either should be there or should not be there. have you tried it both ways?

Yes. It did not make a difference.

I had the same thought. When I spoke with a TurboTax representative, she said that the IRS has been requesting the information from more people. She had no explanation other than, "It's the government, it does not have to make sense."

I will add that I had no problem getting to a Vanguard rep on the phone. Once I got past TurboTax's useless chatbot and got a phone number, I was quickly connected to someone - no wait time.

I will give it until next week to see if Vanguard has a solution. If not, I will enter the information manually. Not sure whether I will mail in the 1099. Hopefully, a sufficient number of IRS employees will have been terminated by the time my return is processed (and since I am not getting a refund) I won't have to worry about a delay.

I enter 1099s manually.

This TT help page might be relevant if you have sales to report:
https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-suppor ... E_US_en_US
The IRS will require a copy of your Form 1099-B if you’re reporting your transactions by sales section totals instead of reporting each one separately, and one of the following is true:

You made adjustments to your investment income.
Your cost basis isn’t reported to the IRS.
Interestingly, TT Online supports upload of a PDF version of a 1099B but TT Desktop does not.

Interesting. I will look into entering the sales individually and see if that makes a difference.
Thanks.

Well, whatever was broken is now fixed. I was able to import my Vanguard 1099's this afternoon.

TurboTax for 2024 changed the 1099 user interface substantially, making manual input unnecessarily cumbersome, particularly if you have multiple 1099s. It was clean & simple in the past, but not anymore.

My impression is that by making manual input difficult, they are trying to encourage (force?) users to load 1099 data directly from the fund companies & brokerages. Does it benefit Intuit to have all this data or is that thought overly paranoid?
