I really enjoyed Bat Masterson, especially his cane, which operated as a single-shot gun. As I recall, he didn't always use it, which made it all the more fun when he did. The P1800 is a car I always wanted to own. Instead, I had a P220 (a wagon), which I bought used. I now own a new XC60 SUV. In the meantime, I had a long series of VWs, from Bugs to Karmann Ghias to Passats.valleyrock wrote: Wed Mar 05, 2025 6:15 pmMoore drives a Volvo P1800 in The Saint. For an episodic TV show in the '60s, it is very well done. I am enjoying it.
It is easy to see why they picked Moore to take over from Sean Connery as James Bond. It's like his role in this show was an audition for James Bond: lots of Bond-like behavior and personality. He even uses the line: "Templar -- Simon Templar." when someone asks his name. Pretty sure this was deliberately tongue-in-cheek. The plots do NOT include evil geniuses trying to take over or blackmail the world but there is international intrigue.
There is the occasional familiar guest star. For example, the episode I just watched had Donald Sutherland. I am unfamiliar with most of the casts.
P.S. I thought I already posted this but apparently, I didn't, so here goes again?
Congrats on owning the P1800!

Well I was talking about the tech and nerd side, not the sales side. My experience is as an engineer, not a dreamer and seller like the Pace character. I have no idea what goes down in business dealings. I found that scene to be ridiculous.littlerfish wrote: Wed Mar 05, 2025 10:23 amIsn't this the show where in the first season Lee Pace has to sodomize a butler in order to get a contract signed? Edit: Season 1, Episode 3. It was to sink a deal, though, not to close one.
Funny thing, way back then I worked for IBM for a while and mostly dealt with engineers. I had 2 days where I had to be a trouble-shooter for an IBM salesman. This guy was tough as nails. In the midst of us selling them a broken computer (which I was there to fix... and did), he was still selling the next gen, even though the customer was PO'd beyond belief. He was selling ice to Alaskans, if you will. I really doubt sex came into it much, but perhaps that is why Lee Pace character is no longer working for IBM. He went too far. However his tough sales demeanor certainly rang true.
In any case, I found some of the dealings with IBM portrayed to be interesting, with shades of truth regarding the real interactions with Microsoft, but also a little strange and not quite how I remember working for IBM all those decades ago.
Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]
Young people don't watch cable TV, they watch streaming services/apps. Based on the cable commercials I recall before we dropped it a few years ago, it would seem to have been older people. But the problem you mention can also happen with 'free' apps w/ commercials. I've watched some old shows on the Pluto app, similar time for commercials to cable, more than broadcast when old shows were made, so I guess they're cutting something though I don't necessarily recall what. But the commercials aren't skewed as old as cable so I guess the viewership isn't either. I'm mainly used to monthly pay (we generally do Netflix plus one at a time channel subscriptions through Prime, eg. Britbox, and rotate around as we 'mine' the shows) so hard to stomach commercials at all. AFAIK my kids (30's) never watch anything with commercials except live sports. CBS/NBC/ABC still have big absolute number audiences though I haven't watched a 'primetime' show on broadcast in decades (I've watched a few such titles when they later showed up on streaming services). We do often watch local news on broadcast but again the commercials skew old, it's probably people like us not younger people watching.gunny wrote: Sat Mar 01, 2025 9:23 pmYes that drives me insane. I first noticed it with episodes of things I knew pretty well and realized something was cut out. Small wonder I stopped getting cable many years ago and even now watch a very limited amount of TV. I keep hoping more people will follow suit, but many of the younger generations I guess don't know any other way, so are more tolerant of it. I swear there's almost as much commercial time as show time now.Nicolas wrote: Sat Mar 01, 2025 12:57 pm I was enjoying Gunsmoke on ME-TV last year, going through all the seasons, until I finally realized they were cutting out scenes to fit in more commercials. Now if I want to see these shows uncut I have to check them out of my public library, or buy them, which I don’t want to do. Then I realized they were doing the same thing to Alfred Hitchcock Presents which I was also watching. Now the only thing I watch on ME-TV are cartoons.

I learned of it from this forum. It's based on a Stephen King book of the same name which I did not read. Borrowed from a local library.
The story is about a time traveler who tries to stop the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. Unusual for sure but I enjoyed it.

I finished season 1 of Paradise yesterday. A relative recommended it and it was so compelling I watched all 8 episodes over the course of a week. I thought it was great and recommend it. The storytelling is flashback heavy (reminds me a bit of the old TV show Lost) for the sake of character development and filling out the plot, but I felt done well. I liked that they answer enough of the core questions and mysteries before the end of season to keep the viewer satisfied.id0ntkn0wjack wrote: Sun Feb 23, 2025 2:01 pm Paradise on Hulu

Three episodes in and have enjoyed the cast, acting and plot.
It’s a “Who can you really trust?” murder mystery with some sci-fi/fantasy elements sprinkled in.
It's been renewed for a second season which reportedly will be out in a year.
If you don't have Hulu, reportedly ABC will be airing season 1 on TV starting Monday, April 7, at 10 PM. On Hulu, it's rated TV-MA, mostly for language as far as I can tell, but I presume the language will be edited to something more appropriate for TV when it airs on ABC.
Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]
We began watching "Paradise" last night, based upon recommendations here. Only a couple episodes in.
We found it entertaining enough to continue, but I did have my usual raised eyebrows over how some of the procedural matters were conducted, (even within the given parameters).
Will be interested to see how the threads are woven into cloth.

We just finished Paradise S1 as well. We liked it overall. Sterling K Brown never ceases to amaze me with his ability to cry in 20 different ways. I liked the overall story and look forward to S2 whenever it comes out. Nothing could match Episode 7, but it was still a very strong first season. Can't wait for Season 2 to see if they can sustain it. Hopefully, it won't fall flat like The Night Agent second season which I thought was really bad.

Joe Pickett Season 1 -- Paramount+
Overall, I enjoyed it. It's based on the 1st and 3rd of the series: Open Season and Winterkill. I would recommend it as a Longmire replacement. My only problem with the first season was that one episode that had to spell out what happened. That wasn't necessary.

Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]
I did not like that show at the beginning (first two episodes), but we kept going and got really into it. Sadly, the second season was released in 2023 and the internet says season three was canceled, so I have given up hope for a continuation of the story and characters. Which is a real bummer, because they left it on that cliffhanger with you-know-who rolling back into town.

Sample a couple of episodes of this, Mindy Kaling's new show. About a woman who takes over an NBA team in LA after her goofy brothers foul up. Cheerful, lightweight, fun to watch. Not Ted Lasso, but with similar vibes. Kaling is a very canny producer, I think.

I recall that the book wasn't up to Wolfe's other works, e.g., The Bonfire of the Vanities, but that was many years ago and I know I finished it.
We're 2 episodes into the TV series and I'll say it's watchable and we plan to finish the series.
A trigger warning: some of the language is more than graphic, but that's the norm today. The "language" is well framed and well delivered!
Jeff Daniels has been making the interview rounds about this new series, and we really tend to like him/his acting.
"Language" is okay (as is some "explicit... acting"), but how about violence (or stress/terror/etc.) level?
Thanks.

Circling back to "A Man In Full" after close to a year.
We had forgotten about it, I guess, and stumbled across a mention elsewhere here on BH, so... yesterday evening turned out to be "it"!
We were going to watch 1 or maybe 2 episodes.
And then, of course, "just the third, because that will put us at halfway..."
And then... "Yup, just one more; they are actually pretty short!"
And then, and then... we were done.

As much as I enjoy Jeff Daniels, I had a bit of trouble at the beginning, thinking his portrayal of the emotions/etc., of his character were just a bit unrealistic. However, I got past that pretty quickly.
I had a few nits to pick, with one of the other actors and with one relationship (including that same actor), but those were easily overlooked.
We both enjoyed it.

Am halfway through "Law School", a 16-episode KDrama about a murder that takes place at a prestigous law school. It's not a great series (IMO), but its like an onion with new layers being exposed each episode.
Word salad would include murder, bribery, plagarism, pushy parents, corruption, keystone cops, respect for law, criminal justice system, enigmatic law professor, faculty, students.
My initial take was that it was awful. But part of it was because of the overly fast dialogue / subtitles, similar character names and confusing time shifts. I was ready to give up on it when it suddenly became less bad.
Do I have better ways to spend my time? Yep, that's for sure. But I've gotten this far so might as well see who the murderer is.
Also, the lead character -- a criminal law professor / ex-prosecuter who loves to teach -- is one of the most unusual characters I've seen onscreen. His demeanor is preternaturally cool and calm and he is both clever and ethical in the face of murder charges. I'd like to see where they go with this since he seems to be a step ahead of everyone else.
But otherwise a no-recommend.

Finished watching "Law School". It actually turned out to be good...just had to wait till the second half for things to ramp up and to get used to the rapid-fire dialogue. Clever courtroom tactics, more crimes than just murder, lots of defense/student interaction, politics now enter the picture, and the lead character, Professor Yang, was awesome, and I mean powerfully awesome, throughout. From what I've read, the closest comparison is "How to Get Away With Murder", so I'll have to check that out some day.
Oh, and did I mention Professor Yang was awesome? There were some goofy student characters, but that seems to be par for the course for law series. But Yang was just phenomenal. Almost super human, so some have called this more of a fantasy law series than a realistic one, and that was meant as a compliment.
Anyway, back to "Chuck" and "Slow Horses".

RoboDoc - Prime
It’s a documentary about the amazing 1987 film RoboCop. It’s really well done. I recommend.
Now, I need to snag the 4K version of RoboCop. It’s great for its satire. A lot of it applies to today, which is crazy.
I put it in TV since it’s multiple episodes long. And each episode is long. But it’s not as crazy as the Never Sleep Again documentary is for the Nightmare on Elm Street films. I recommend that one too.

Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham’s drama about a teen accused of murder is astounding. Its dazzling performances, and the devastating questions it asks, will linger with you

Thanks for that tip!jjunk wrote: Thu Mar 13, 2025 6:55 pmGreat show! You might also want to watch The Punisher series as well as they're semi-connected. Usually the order is Daredevil S1 + S2, Punisher, then Daredevil S3. You dont need to watch Punisher but its an excellent show, very heavy action.yankees60 wrote: Sun Mar 09, 2025 12:35 pm Been seeing so many ads for the current Daredevil that it led me to going back to the 1st 2015 season.
Watched the first episode and loved it. My kind of TV show.
Will now probably watch all episodes of all the seasons.
I finished watching season 1 the night before last and immediately went into season 2.
Both have reminded me why I loved and was an avid reading of Marvel comic books during my entire teenage years.
After watching a few episodes last night I went online to look at Davedevil covers to see which ones had Kingpin and The Punisher in them as I thought I'd read them. But they seemed to have come out way after I stopped buying and reading them. However, it was still nice seeing all those covers again!

Toxic Town on Netflix. Based on a true story in England about toxic waste cleanup gone wrong. Four parts, very well done. One of the stars of the show is also on the current season of the White Lotus.

Douglas is Cancelled -- BritBox
This was actually really good. It's the latest Steven Moffat. I recommend.
21 Jump Street -- German DVDs
I'm finally getting around to ripping these to binge them. It's the only way to watch the show with the original music.

I watched Godless. It is supposedly a 7 episode miniseries though some of the episodes were over an hour. It stars Jeff Daniels, Michelle Dockery and Sam Waterston. It takes place in the 1880s US West. It centers on a town almost entirely inhabited by women after a mining accident and a group of bandits. I liked it.

Watching through some oldies as I rip my DVDs.
Nowhere Man - DVD
It’s about a guy whose identity is wiped out after he took a photograph. It still holds up. I recommend.
Max Headroom - DVD
A short lived cyberpunk TV show based on the film 20 Minutes into the Future. You can find the film on YouTube. It’s only has been released on VHS in the US. Both are really good. The pilot is a shorter version of the film with some recasting.
What’s nice about these shows is that each episode is basically one and done. They’re all pretty much self contained. There is an overall arch in Nowhere Man, but it’s not like serial TV today.
I’m still making my way through season 2 of Joe Pickett and season 3 of Only Murders in the Building. Both are really good.

Sherlock, on Amazon Prime with Acorn.
This is a short series of Sherlock Holmes stories set in modern day London. Each episode is movie length. I enjoyed the series.

The Twister: Caught in the Storm - Netflix documentary.
Wasn't too bad but I cannot recommend it. The survivors that discuss the events had incredible stories. Unbelievable that some of them were actually caught in the vortex and lived. My criticism is strictly with the way the documentary was organized. Wish there was more detail about the storm. After watching it, I googled the Joplin hurricane, to get more information on the specs, the direction that it travelled, etc. which helped me understand more about what the people went through. Just wish they could have added more time in the tv show and presented that information.

If someone asks you the time, why are you telling them how to build a watch?

Will now probably watch all episodes of all the seasons.
After finishing Daredevil I went directly to the Punisher.
I enjoyed the first two seasons of Daredevil and stated that it brought me back to my Marvel comic book reading days, which explained why I enjoyed it.
However, after now watching give episodes of The Punisher I'm finding it vastly superior to Daredevil.
Daredevil is standard cartoonish with all the fight scenes and taking on overwhelming opposition and always winning. It's interesting if the fighting has some uniqueness to it. Nevertheless, it is all quite unbelievable and unrealistic.
However, The Punisher is far more believable and realistic.
Plus, it is quite well connected to the first two seasons of Daredevil with some of the same characters and flashback scenes.
So, thanks again for this well taken tip!
