What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Grade: B+
Thought I'd not seen it before but as I kept watching I realized I had. But, as usual for me, I remembered little of it. Kept my attention but, in the end, the movie was really mostly about the Matt Damon character - Sonny Vaccaro. For some reason the movie refused to show the face of the actor playing Michael Jordan. By the way. I was fully aware for the Michael Jordan era. However, he never made the impact on me that LeBron has. (Written as a Celtics fan for 60 years).

Watched Terminator 2: Judgment Day (after watching The Terminator the day before), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong, Joe Morton, Robert Patrick, et al. Directed by James Carmeron.
Stan Winston's special effects for T2 are much improved over T1; however, I like the original movie better.

Remember going to see it at the movies with great anticipation. Went with my friend and took a friend's son with us. The theater was so packed that the kid had to sit on my lap!

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Something to be said for each. T1 has an effective use of an industrial punch press, for instance. T2 came out five years after Eric Drexler's Engines of Creation book on nanotechnology, and I remember my tech friends were all about how the new terminator was nanotech. And T2 has the crackerjack "escape from the prison hospital" sequence -- "Take my hand if you want to live." Pretty good sequel.turtlebug wrote: Tue Jan 28, 2025 12:57 pm Watched Terminator 2: Judgment Day (after watching The Terminator the day before), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong, Joe Morton, Robert Patrick, et al. EDIT: Actually, I think it's "Come with me if you want to live."

Get Carter - 1971. On DVD from the library.
Mike Hodges directs Michael Caine, Ian Hendry, and more in this tale of a man working through his grief at his brother's death.
London gangster Jack Carter (Caine) goes up to Newcastle to bury his brother Frank, and find out why he died. In the process of his finding out, things happen. Lethal things. Now seen as one of the best -- maybe the best -- English gangster films ever made. Stark unsparing photography -- the bridges, the ships, the bricks, the river -- clear descendant of the cinéma vérité violence of Bonnie and Clyde.
It's violent, it's complicated, and it's ugly, and I recommend it if you're into that kind of thing.

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera on rental. My wife decided out of the blue she wanted to see the first one, so we watched that yesterday on HBO. When I told her there was a second one, she wanted to see it since she liked the first one. This wasn't as good as the first but has the same interesting mechanics and planning for breaking into a highly secure area. Probably a little too long but overall watchable. Not worth the current rental price IMO but once it comes down to under $10 it might be worth watching if you liked the first movie. Several characters carry over.

Against All Odds - 1984. On DVD from the library.
Taylor Hackford directs Jeff Bridges, Rachel Ward, Richard Widmark, James Woods, and Jane Greer in an 80's remake of the 1947 noir classic Out Of the Past.
There are some movies that it's just a ridiculous act of hubris to remake. Out Of the Past is in that category, often cited as the best noir movie ever made. Hackford is a reasonably good director, though the patchwork quality of his movies makes one wonder whether it's actually him, or something else -- a frequent collaborator? But movies like An Officer and a Gentleman and Dolores Claiborne and Ray and Parker are all good movies, all directed by Hackford, which I think is enough to establish that he knows what he's doing.
But he doesn't have Robert Mitchum and Kirk Douglas to work with here, and despite his evident talents, he does not have the creepy sensibility of Jacques Tourneur. A key disappointment is the use of Alex Karras as a pivotal figure in the plot. Another is the use of Chichen Itza in Mexico as sort of a half-hearted set decoration. Once things get back to L.A., and Woods, Widmark, and Greer re-enter the plot, things heat up again. But not far enough, because Rachel Ward's Jessie isn't wicked enough. And that's Hackford's fault. And that makes the ending a really damp anticlimax about real estate dealings, compared to the older film.
Interesting seeing Jeff Bridges play an out-of-work NFL tight end, but overall I can't recommend it. Watch Out Of the Past instead, or again. Or another good Jacques Tourneur movie, Nightfall.

Not a movie but movie related. Quite surprised that Amazon Prime Video has a higher movie share than does Netflix. Netflix charges while we get Amazon Prime Video for free as a part of having Amazon Prime.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Watched "Primal Fear" (1996) with Richard Gere, Laura Linney, and Edward Norton. It's about a big-shot defense attorney (Gere) representing an altar boy (Norton) accused of murdering an archbishop.
For 1996, this movie would be shocking...as in totally unexpected plot twists.
In 2025, it's still shocking, but less so for me at any rate, partly since simce I've seen it before (and read the book by William Diehl).
Still, I'd rate it mostly average since Gere/Linney as defense attorney and prosecutor were not that exciting. And the tension could have been dialed up more.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
This makes sense (for me at least) as I see Netflix as more of a TV place vs. a movie place. I actually dont like most of Amazons stuff but I will say I mostly watch movies there. So I fall directly into this tracking data. HBO is the only service I always keep active because I feel like it has the best mix of both.yankees60 wrote: Thu Jan 30, 2025 8:45 pm Not a movie but movie related. Coincidentally, the same concept behind both movies. And both were quite good (A-/B+).

Challengers - 2024. On DVD from the library.
Luca Guadagnino directs Vendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Faist in a tennis-flavored tale of a woman caught between two men who may be closer to each other than either is to her.
Takes a while to get current movies from the library, so I'm only now getting to this one. A smoothly directed tale of an old story, a woman who, confronted with two close friends, marries the man she's only affectionate toward, instead of the other one, the lover she really wants. And the consequences as she goes through life. Set on the professional tennis circuit, where the two men are both competing to restore their flagging careers. Lots of bare skin, usually glistening with sweat, often (too often) in slow motion action. Not much of a story. Good score. Vendaya puts in a great job, acting quite a bit with simply facial expressions.
Would I recommend it? That's tough. Maybe just for Vendaya's acting, but it's really kind of hard to sit through all that slo-mo supposed eroticism. Two older movies would perhaps repay the time spent better: the 1932 Ernst Lubitsch classic Trouble in Paradise, or even better, the 1933 Lubitsch comedy Design For Living, also about a woman torn between two men and deciding to live with both of them.

About to watch 20 Million Miles to Earth on MeTV in a couple of hours. One of the better 50s Sci-Fi vehicles, it features Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion animation of a Venusian creature, and William Hopper (Perry Mason's Paul Drake) as the protagonist.
I can remember watching the flick as a kid in the 50s.

Nosferatu (2024). I never saw the original but had heard good things about this one. This movie shows why I'd never be a good movie critic as I think it's one of the worst films I've seen in a while. I felt compelled to finish it because the rental price was $20 but it simply wasnt worth it. I felt like I was watching a bad play where all the kids still didn't know how to act properly and overdid everything. I have liked some of Eggers films in the past but this is easily his worst from my POV. Not recommended.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
"Mulholland Drive" (2001) 2 h 27m - Written/directed by David Lynch w/ Naomi Watts, Laura Harring, Justin Theroux
A crazy, noir, psychological drama ostensibly about Hollywood and the fierce competition for parts and the mob influence on who gets those parts and romances formed during the casting of those parts. The actual story involves a perky aspiring actress and a mysterious woman who lands on her doorstep with no memory of who she is after surviving a car accident on Mulholland Drive. But the story is intertwined with dream-like symbolism which will drive a viewer crazy trying to figure it out. Apparently Lynch liked it that way. He recently passed away and I don't think he ever revealed the key to unlocking the meaning of this film.
Whether one likes the film or not (I'm on the fence), the direction is brilliant, the acting is brilliant (especially by Watts), and the soundtrack is "interesting".

"Complete Unknown".
Timothée Chalamet is a mystifyingly credible Bob Dylan. Ed Norton and all others deliver a fantastic performance that makes them just as important as the central character. A movie to remember.

I find more value in that than the movies but its all a matter of taste.yankees60 wrote: Sun Feb 02, 2025 11:04 am" I particularly like their music service"jjunk wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 3:24 pm
No I'm a heavy Amazon services user. I particularly like their music service. But i find most of their video content to be "meh". I did really like The Boys and can't wait for the final season of it. There have been a few other shows and movies here or there but I find their service to be worth the price (which isnt much) for the content they produce. I also hate their interface, Apple is doing the same thing though, where they include all sorts of other potential service options that arent actually part of the Prime service.
What is included as part of Amazon Prime? Or, the upgraded paid version?
For me I find many movies on Amazon Prime that I give high grades to.
To keep this topical, we just watched Back in Action on Netflix. Stars Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz as spies turned parents that have to come out of hiding. It was predictable and corny, but entertaining for a non-football weekend.

A Real Pain, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin as two cousins who take a "heritage tour" together in Poland, in honor of their grandmother who was from Poland and had escaped the Nazis and moved to America. Both characters have mental issues that cause them to act in diametrically opposed ways.
Very interesting. Brought up lots of questions about "heritage tours" and touring in general, and about generational trauma.
I've done several group tours and am very glad that I've never met a character like Benji (Kieran Culkin) on any of them!
My non-Jewish friend who watched the movie with me said that when she took an overnight train in Germany, she had nightmares all night from remembering how the Germans had hauled the Jews away to concentration camps on those trains.

"Back in Action["
Is that the one where neither of them knew that the other was a spy?

No thats a different movie, I think Mr. and Mrs. Smith might be the one where they didn't know, not sure. In this one, they start out as co-workers but she finds out she's pregnant and so they leave the spy life to start a family.

We watched Gladiator II last night on Paramount+, and thought it was very good. The action scenes and special effects were excellent.
I have seen the first Gladiator several times, but my wife had never seen it and got the story line and enjoyed it.
She also appreciated a streaming experience with NO F-bombs. The profanity has become tedious in many of these shows.

Agreed on all the points you mentioned! I thought the Travel Guide was very much in character over the many I have spent the day with. Should win some major awards.PhoebeCoco wrote: Sun Feb 02, 2025 12:37 pm A Real Pain, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin as two cousins who take a "heritage tour" together in Poland, in honor of their grandmother who was from Poland and had escaped the Nazis and moved to America. For me it was a roller coaster movie. The action scenes were excellent. The non-action was too often too drawn out and non-entertaining.mike@jb wrote: Sun Feb 02, 2025 3:37 pm We watched Gladiator II last night on Paramount+, and thought it was very good. "Bicycle Thieves" (1948) 1h 29m - Directed by Victorio De Sica w/ Lamberto Maggiorani, Enzo Staiola
"In post-war Italy, a working-class man's bicycle is stolen, endangering his efforts to find work. He and his son set out to find it."
Second time watching, which did spoil it a bit since I was now fixated on how unreasonable it seemed that a movie would spend 1-1/2 hours devoted to a guy looking for his stolen bicycle. So the early scenes did get boring the second time around, but it became more interesting as we saw the guy's desperation to find his bicycle. The bicycle was a requirement for his job of plastering ads and movie posters on walls around town and the bike was stolen his very first day of work. Ouch.
One (unintentionally) funny scene in the movie is when the guy and his son enter a cafe and order mozzarella sandwiches. When it arrives at their table, they begin eating their sandwiches with a knife and fork! Is that some kind of Italian thing I never heard of?!!
The film is very well done acting and directing wise and is considered one of the most influential films in cinema. I personally prefer De Sica's 1970 film "The Garden of the Finzi-Continis", but as I understand it, that was a break in his normal style.
I really really hated the end of this film.

Nightbitch. Stars Amy Adams as a woman who becomes a dog as part of dealing with giving birth to her first child. Adams was incredible in the role. The movie is equal parts odd, hilarious and thought provoking. Especially since I'm a man with no children. This really seems to speak to the female side of motherhood and I got the high points. I'd be interested to see how mothers feel about it. I found it very entertaining, but it's also out there.

Yes. Actually I can't remember the last movie I watched. Haven't been to a gigaplex in multiple decades.snyder66 wrote: Sat Aug 30, 2014 3:52 pm How about, Last Good Movie? It's been quite a while for me...

Almost any college campus. One of the classics of post-war neorealism. Once considered the greatest film of all time. Saw it 40+ years ago.
Justwatch.com says it's on Max and Prime Video.
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Agree, the fight choreography and the special effects were quite good. The supporting actor Alexander Karim who played a healer/doctor for the gladiators had some scenes with really good chemistry between he and the lead character. I liked this cast.mike@jb wrote: Sun Feb 02, 2025 3:37 pm We watched Gladiator II last night on Paramount+, and thought it was very good. The action scenes and special effects were excellent . . .
