0-5 for having heard of any of the bands! What time era are they from? What kind of music?
Mac Dre a Bay Area legend.
Juve a southern rapper.
The others fall under a genre called “Phonk” or “dark wave Phonk” that I came across. My musical tastes are wide open, always have been.
Phonk is new to me!

Tedeschi Trucks Band - Full Show - Port Chester, NY 10/8/2024

First part of the show does not have great sound but then, at some point, it greatly improves and stays that way.

I'd already stated here how when I saw Susan Tedeschi and her band in 1997 I did not think she belonged there. That if any other band had a male guitarist playing as poorly as she did that day we'd not be seeing that band. Therefore, I quite surprised by the entertaining solo that she did play in this video. She'd definitely improved to be quite listenable.

Had seen Derek Trucks previously when with Warren Haines in the Allman Brother Band.

I did see the Tedeschi Trucks Band about 7 years ago.

It was at the Green River Festival (iceport has also made reference to that festival).

They were the end of an excellent day of music which had Los Lobos before them and the North Mississippi All Stars before them.

Wanting to retain my viewing place of the best place anywhere - front row, center - meant I had to stand there for six straight hours while those three bands played. If I'd gone to get something to eat or go to the bathroom I'd be strongly risking losing my spot.

The Festival is now charging all-time high prices. $250 for it including parking for this year. Yet in contrast to those three bands I just named .. each day's headliner is a band I've never heard of!

Furthermore, there is only one band I've heard of that is playing during the entire festival and I don't like that band. Hopefully, I will be pleasantly surprised by some of the bands that I have never seen or heard of.

Samantha Fish is one of those I'd never heard of prior to seeing her at the Green River Festival. A HUGE pleasant surprise!

She can play!

Son Rompe Pera live in concert at Grand Performances, Los Angeles

Saw this band last year at the oft-mentioned Green River Festival. Also, saw them for the first time the year before in my own tiny town (population: 6,000)!

Quite lively band!

I think I saw about 30 musical acts at last year's Green River Festival. At the end I ranked them all in order in terms of my enjoyment of them.

I think that this band was in the top three.

One of my favorite albums over the past several years. Here's a link to the full album (no "hidden" tracks):

JJ Cale - The Road To Escondido - 2006

One of my favorite tracks: Who Am I Telling You? · Eric Clapton · J.J. Cale

Love Derek Trucks' slide kicking in at around 2:30...

I get it. :beer I just happened to have (one of) the artist's own playlists for the album in my browser favorites, as I've played it often.

My music library is in my browser bookmarks with links to YouTube playlists, played for free with Adblock Plus and uBlock Origin zapping out all ads. I've seen you (maybe?) call into question how the audio quality of YouTube stacks up against other streaming services, but it sounds excellent to me, using HD settings patched to a decent amplifier/home stereo system. I highly doubt I'd be able to detect any improvement in quality using paid streaming services.

This is the first I am learning of her death.

I knew I had some of her records / CDs but was surprised when I looked at my list to see that I own 12 different CDs / records. Had forgotten how much she created.

This was one of early ones I acquired in the mis-60s when my record collection was fairly small, which meant I listened to it fairly often.

MARIANNE FAITHFULL Go Away From My World

Buying that much of her recordings was a sign of me liking her as a performer.

Wow, I never knew that she co-wrote and recorded Sister Morphine and that she may have been the inspiration for the song. Frankly, her As Tears Go By never really impressed me. Her voice seemed flat and like a monotone. Maybe that’s what she was aiming for.

The Paper Kites is an Australian indie folk/rock band. They have a fairly extensive catalogue and IMHO the 2 standout albums are a collection of duets, Roses and a live album, At the Roadhouse .

From Roses, a duet with fellow Aussie Julia Stone "Without Your Love":

Roses again, with frontman Sam Bentley and Amanda Bergman "Crossfire":

"Climb on Your Tears" with American singer Aoife O'Donovan "Climb on Your Tears":

From At the Roadhouse, "I Don't Want to Go That Way";

Booker T Jones - 11-19-2019 - Ardmore Music Hall - Ardmore, PA - 4K, matrix audio

Last night listened to this 2+ times while reading a book. I will complete that third listen and add more today while I am either reading that book or other reading.

Obviously, I highly recommend you listening to it.

I saw him sometime in the 2016 to 2019 time period at the Green River Festival. It was a beautiful sonny summer Saturday. Around 5 PM or so.

Was not looking for to it with great anticipation but was hugely pleasantly surprised. Did not know that he was as good a guitarist as he is on the keyboards.

In this video his son in in the band as both an excellent guitarist and vocalist.

Booker T was 75 years old in this video.

I hope that I am fortunate enough to see him again.

Even though this is not what I listened to ... it is about what someone else is listening to (along with hundreds of thousands of others) ...

Two articles ... one Washington Post and the other Guardian ... about a woman who is daily listening to her late father's 10,000 record collection and the responses she is getting from those hundreds of thousands of followers of her.

Maybe you or me will also listen to what she is playing and put it here some day?

Yes. Bigger in terms of records. Mine is estimated to be 7,000. But also 5,000 CDs -- many of them duplicates of the records but most not. Finally, have a TB of eMusic.

You'd be surprised as to how little a room you can put in all those records.

I don't think she will get through listening to all 10,000 records. If they were only 1/2 hour each (which they are not). that would be 5000 hours. Over 10 years that would be about 10 hours a week every week of those 10 years. LIstening to only one day is going to take about 30 years.

Yes. Boccherini is among the classical composers who are too often overlooked (there are definitely others).

His Musica notturna delle strade di Madrid (NIght Music in Madrid) - the final movement: Ritirata notturna di Madrid (Retreat of the Military Night Watch of Madrid).
[I think I've got that right...]

Here is a recording of a performance at the 2023 Nobel Ceremony Gala 2023 (start just before 9:42)
Do listen until the very end of this piece (it's not the entire lengthy Gala, just a few minutes). Great audio arrangement.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0m-xSV29ZI

Listen as the musicians start to march into the concert hall, and then when they fade away as they march off...

I must say... although we've always been true classical music aficionados and love live performance (we'll pay extra to get a good VIEW of the musicians, even if they aren't the top "acoustic" spots), YouTube (recent videos) has some special advantages. The camera work has become increasingly sophisticated and they really zero in on the musician(s) of the moment. So you can SEE the fingers of each musician, and the expressions of their faces, etc.
I swear... I can hear the piccolo better if I am *seeing* the piccolo, even though the sound isn't any different without that view.

Enjoy!

Ken Fritz also had a massive vinyl collection. But he spent much more time (and money) building his dream system than listening to it. And also he wasn’t listening to Led Zeppelin :D

Yes. You'd given that to us before and I read that long article.

For a while I was trying to get through all of mine as I'd put a date when I listened on a list I had of all of them. But did not come close. For many of my CDs they've only been listened to once. Though I've heard many of the best songs from many of them when I took 10,000+ of them to put on my iPod.

Yes I know I’ve linked to Fritz here before. Somehow I’m strangely fascinated by that guy. :D

There’s used to be an app called “Forgotify” that directed you to music on Spotify that’s never been listened to by anybody! Yes such music exists, and apparently a lot of it! That’s how vast these streaming music catalogs are. I used to listen to it back when I had Spotify. And as soon as I listened to whatever music then it came off that app! It had to.

Hmm, that app seems to be gone now, no longer on the App Store. https://www.digitaltrends.com/music/forgotify/

Enjoy!

RM
Thanks, listening now, definitely seeing music being performed enhances the auditory experience. I’m reminded of Samuel Pepys, the 17th century diarist, whom I’m reading. He was a music lover but with sound recording still centuries off just about the only way he could hear music was to make it himself, which he did. I’m sure he had access to concerts too of course. But Mozart and Beethoven, for example, hadn’t been born yet so he never heard their pieces!

I am always amazed at the continual flow of new books, movies, music. What percentage of any of it can we expose ourselves to?

Exactly. One’s lifetime is limited, especially to those of us who have attained an advanced age :D You haven’t time to read all books. Therefore read only the best books (and movies/music)!

People might recognize the opening movement of the String Quintet in C Major G.324, No. 6 from the movie "Master and Commander". The Captain and the Dr. play this piece as a duo:

This group is really interesting:

Bremer Barockorchester

It was nice to see some familiar faces in this performance.
This reminds me to seek them out more. Usually they just crop up during some search.
They have some very interesting performances.

The way they ended this reminds me of Haydn's Farewell Symphony. Nice.
(Symphony No. 45)

Thanks!

I know a startlingly small percentage of the artists nominated for the 67th Grammy Awards, but I was very gratified to see that Gillian Welch and David Rawlings won Best Folk Album for their outstanding album:

This is one of several gems on the album: North Country

Code: Select all

Some long dark night, you might send me a letter
Full of sleepless devilry
I'll tell you now we could be together
If you ever get tired of being free
Way up in the North Country

Also, though she didn't win anything, Shemekia Copeland was nominated in three categories. I haven't followed Copeland's career, but the nominations prompted me to give at least this one single a listen:

Blame It On Eve · Shemekia Copeland

Nice! Great guitar and sax.

I saw Shemekia Copeland a couple of times in the late 90s at a little hole in the wall in what is now the town where I live. I saw her father there a few times before he passed away. Johnny Copeland was an energetic and charismatic performer. His daughter wasn't as animated, as I remember it, but she could really belt out the blues. There was an unmistakable confidence in her stage presence. I doubt she was even 20 at the time, and as I remember it, she started coming to CT very soon after her father had passed away. Anyway, it was nice to see Shemekia get some recognition.

I only skimmed the ceremony on DVR, but I caught Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars singing California Dreaming, and I thought they did a superb job.

Really? I thought that they stunk. (Don’t get me started about the rest of the show.). Even DW agreed, and she is a big Lady GaGA fan. Compare them to the original:

My thoughts are, if you are already a star and you cover another star’s song, you should do it better. Like, Jimi Hendrix and All Along The Watchtower.

Well, my thought is that "better" is a very subjective measure (and maybe the wrong one to use). I liked the live rendition just fine, sorry, and there were probably scheduling conflicts with the original artists. :P I spent literally only 5 or 10 minutes scanning the award show ceremony using the thumbnail preview on the fast-forward button. Watched the part where they put up the images of artists that died last year. I don't know why I stopped on the Lady Gaga/Bruno Mars duet, and it wasn't absolutely perfect, but I found it moving, and I think with the overarching backdrop of the catastrophic fires in LA it might have been an emotional moment for the crowd, too.
I'd be safe and warm (I'd be safe and warm)
If I was in L.A. (If I was in L.A.)

I mostly just wanted to see if Welch and Rawlings would make it into the broadcast, but no such luck. Not the right audience, apparently. Understandable.

I prefer the original too. I quit watching the Grammys a few years ago as it’s a waste of time. It’s all gowns (or the lack of!), glitz, and dancing now, not much good music. Maybe I’m just old but I don’t need that stuff. It’s become much like the Oscars which I also don’t watch (but my wife does).

As usual, a lot of excellent content from you and some things to respond to.

I've never seen any kind of awards show -- Academy (movies) or Grammys (music). Though I think I did see some MTV versions of them in the late 80s or early 90s.

The Mamas and Papas California Dreaming would always be on one of my top all-time song lists. Listened to this one and found it to be an distinctly inferior version. I'd go back to the original every time.

Shemekia Copeland.

I'm fairly certain that I saw her at the Iron Horse, Northampton about 20 years ago.

But I know I saw her in June 2023 here:

https://sheatheater.org/

She and her band were excellent. She was quite dynamic. A great performer, which led me to take many pictures of her and her band that night.

This band opened for her that night:

https://www.mistybluesband.com/

They were also excellent that night, same as all the many other times I've seen them.

Recommend you see both that band and Copeland if the opportunity arises.

I did not think that they were bad. Just inferior.

But whenever I see bands doing covers I expect them to either do it exactly the same way but sound better because you are experiencing it live or to do a unique arrangement of the song. This version did not satisfy either of those criteria.

Among my perceived reasons why I'd never seen either. Also, thought that what was popular was not my tastes in either movies or music.

I bought this EP when it came out in 1983 as I was and still am a big Dire Straits /Mark Knopfler fan. I love his guitar playing style. This EP was never issued as a CD, but a few of the songs appear on other reissues. Amazon Music has the EP, but leaves off Badges, Posters, T-Shirts. YouTube has the whole EP, from the vinyl?
