I've been playing Wordle, Connections and Spelling Bee for a few years now, but only recently got into solitaire and mahjong.

I can't seem to find the latter game apps that don't make me constantly update and install and wonder if it's scraping my security info. :confused

I'd like to learn some useful social games like pinochle but golly that's complicated!

Did you have any previous experience with mahjong before you started playing online?

I’d like to play it, but I’d be starting completely from scratch.

Duolingo. Not exactly a game, but with words.

It's not quite free, but really cheap. Stardew Valley is $10 (sometimes $5 on sale). An amazing game.

The AARP online versions are an alternative:

Plus Merriam Webster for word games - see Menu:

These games are some of the best Free options available, and believe me I have tried many. They don't require any sign-up, just install them and have an internet connection.

THE DARK MOD
thedarkmod.com

I have been playing this one for years on PC (very easy to install) and Linux (harder install, but runs better). It is an open source clone of the old game THIEF. It looks awesome on a big screen. It's free and the community develops "missions" that you can download within the game and run. Many of the missions remind me of the old MYST game that was so popular, where you have to find clues and solve puzzles (although my nephew with low attention span just watches the gameplay videos on youtube rather than putting in the effort to figure things out).

XONOTIC
xonotic.org

First Person Shooter. Also free, PC and Linux.

MINETEST
minetest.net

Free, open source clone of Minecraft. PC and Linux. Great for young kids as they can engage in endless world-building.

No games on computers, but I use my Kindle to play variations of Scrabble, sudoku, and wordle. Make sure you choose games that allow you to select a skill level. One that is trivial is soon abandoned.

Bridgebase has a free duplicate bridge game that comes out every Friday. Bots play the other 3 hands so no partner needed.

Older thread, and maybe not spot on for my comment, but I play several online games on my android tablet mostly via apps. Some are ok as far as ads go: solitaire, free cell, NYT games (with subscription). Some ads but short.

I also play others that have ads to move along in the game or get a new life. I've lived with them until now.

In the last couple of weeks I've noticed that the ads have gone from 15 or 30 seconds to a minute, and in the last week, many are now 2 minutes, most times. I'm bailing out of several games that I've played for years, but would still like something to play. examples : we are warriors, screw ocean (but almost any screw game). Plus in more than one of these games, the ad starts, gives you a clickable exit after it's done, but actually launches a new ad for a different game app (mob control or another by same dev) that opens a new tab in the browser.

Any android game suggestions with limited ads that are fun to play?

Boardgamearena.com has free and paid member games. The interface is pretty good. We use them for online family game nights. They have some games that are really good and some that are pretty lame. You can form your own game group or play with whoever is online. They have a chat box inside each game but we run a google video meeting so we have voice and video and pets and cooking and whatever is happening in the back ground while playing.
