Experience with Donegal Insurance, anyone?

I have an independent agent that's quoting Donegal Insurance for home and auto coverage. I'd never heard of them prior to receiving the quotes, which are about $1,000/year lower than I'm currently paying for the same coverage. The few Internet reviews I can find don't seem great, but then again...who goes online to talk about how much they love their insurance company?

I exist in the amorphous state of wanting to be cheap while also believing that sometimes I get what I pay for. So any feedback on this company is much appreciated.

We have them for auto insurance but haven't had to use them. They were recommended by our independent agent who thinks well of them. We are in Delaware.

My family uses them in PA and we've never had an issue. I've had a few no fault fender benders over the last 10 years and never had any issues when dealing with them though I cannot speak to an at fault accident. I'd say they are similar to Erie insurance.

We have had them before for, it's been a while but I think it was for auto, possibly home, and we didn't have any issues with them. They stopped writing in our state.

We have Donegal for home, auto, umbrella.

Never had to make a claim - I’d be interested to hear first hand experiences with that process.

Anyone else with Donegal experience, particularly any claims?

I did not switch to Donegal last year, but renewal is coming up with my current insurer, and I'm planning to get another quote from Donegal.
