Post by Miriam2 »

Hi South Florida Bogleheads! 🌴 8-)

The Chicago Bogleheads and the Pre-Retirement Life Stage Chapters are hosting a very informative online meeting on Medicare and the new Medicare rules with licensed Medicare agent, Lonnie Thibodeaux. This is the second time the Bogleheads have invited Lonnie to speak (the first meeting was on Oct. 29, 2022). He really knows Medicare and is very capable of explaining it and answering your Medicare and Medicare Advantage questions.

Time: Wed. Dec. 13, 2023 - 8:00 pm ET

Topics covered will include the different parts of Medicare, Medigap insurance, Medicare Advantage, what is and is not covered by Medicare & Medicare plans, Medicare eligibility, enrollment periods, deadlines for signing up and making changes, the costs of Medicare and IRMAA (Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount).

The targeted audience is anyone who wants to learn about Medicare and this is particularly important for those approaching retirement. After Lonnie's presentation, the meeting will open for your questions. Questions will be taken live (you may keep your video off) or you can post them in the chat.

If you wish to submit your Qs ahead of the meeting, here is the Ask-Your-Question link . It's not necessary to rsvp for the meeting.

HERE is the zoom link for the meeting- and the full zoom link is also posted on the Bogleheads Blog Calendar of Events

Online Meeting-Jill Steinberg-"Finding Purpose in Retirement"- Wed Jan 10, 2024-8:00 pm ET

Post by Miriam2 »

Hi South Florida Bogleheads! 🌴 8-)

The Pre-Retirement Life Stage Chapter will be hosting a great online meeting this coming Wed. Jan. 10, 2024, at 8:00 pm ET. with a discussion of how to prepare yourself for a happy and fulfilling retirement.

This is a presentation and Q & A with featured guest, Dr. Jill Steinberg - "Finding Purpose in Retirement" - an evidence-based presentation on why purpose is important for one's mental and physical health in retirement and how we can find our purpose. The Bogleheads have hosted Jill Steinberg for two previous online meetings "From Retiring to Rewiring," and her presentation and detailed answers to our many Qs have always been very well received.
"When thinking about successful retirement, most people and the research deal with financial issues and ignore the personal and social aspects of retirement. Financial resources are necessary but not sufficient for a successful retirement, which can last over 20 years."
-- Dr. Jill Steinberg
Although our targeted audience for this meeting is pre-retirement and retirement life stages, all Bogleheads are welcome and encouraged to attend. Retirement comes sooner than we think

You can submit Qs ahead of time HERE . All responses are anonymous. You don't need to RSVP to attend.

The zoom link is HERE - and the full zoom link is also posted on the BH Calendar of Events.
Jill Steinberg has a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Ohio State University, and is an Emeritus Professor at San Jose State University. She worked as a Licensed Clinical Psychologist for 23 years in private practice in Santa Cruz, California. Jill is the author and founder of MyRetirementWorks.com, and teaches classes and presents her research on successful retirement to universities around the country and to organizations like Google and Mensa. Her research, "Successful Retirement: From Retiring to Rewiring," was published in 2021 in "The Aging Consumer: Perspectives from Psychology and Marketing," 2nd Edition (Routledge, 2021).
Thank you HoosierJim for organizing another exciting meeting :happy

The zoom link is HERE and the full zoom link will be posted on the Bogleheads Calendar of Events.

I would just like to wish Taylor the very best on his 100th, truly worth celebrating such a long and productive life and so helpful to the many thousands of others whom he helped without every personally knowing them. I thank him for all he's done for me and other Bogleheads with his sage advice and example of generous help rather than self-aggrandizement. He is, like his hero, Jack Bogle, a brilliant and successful investor, a wise man, and something rare in the world of finance, an altruistic expert who tries his best to help others rather than stuffing his bulging pockets with yet more hundred dollar bills. I place both Taylor and Jack on the Mount Rushmore for investors and also as examples of how the rest of us mortals should model ourselves. They are truly giants in many ways.

Hello South Florida Bogleheads! 🌴 8-)

The "Starting Out" Life Stage Chapter will host THE MAD FIENTIST RETURNS! on Wed. Jan 31, 2024, at 8:00 pm ET. 8-)

*** pronounced fi-entist, like scientist, but a Fientist: "One who studies Financial Independence."

Image

Please join us for what is sure to be a very interesting discussion with THE MAD FIENTIST on achieving the dream of Financial Independence Retiring Early (FIRE), then becoming a first-time parent :beer and also becoming a first-time home-owner :moneybag

The Bogleheads hosted The Mad Fientist on Aug. 30, 2021 , for a wonderful discussion of achieving the dream of Financial Independence and Retiring Early, the highs and lows of financial independence and early retirement, how to achieve a balanced life, budgeting and spreadsheets, withdrawal and rebalancing strategies, and much more. Now he returns as a father and a homeowner. We'll hear his reflections on how the Financial Independence Retiring Early (FIRE) turned out as he moved on in life.

This meeting is appropriate for all Life Stages and all Bogleheads are invited to join.

You can submit your Qs ahead of time HERE - or type them into the zoom chat window during the Q&A session. All responses are anonymous. It's not necessary to RSVP to come to the meeting.

The presentation portion of the meeting will be recorded. The Q&A following the presentation will not be recorded.

HERE is the zoom link - and the full zoom link is also posted on the BH Blog Calendar of Events.

Hope everyone can join the meeting!

Hello South Florida Bogleheads! 🌴 8-)

The Bogleheads are delighted to host Nords - retired military officer and long-time Boglehead Doug Nordman aka Nords - for an online meeting on Wed. April 17, 2024, at 8:00 pm ET. Nords will carry forth and answer questions on "Financial and Life Lessons Learned from Military Service" and how to plan for your future following the Great Military Adventure. Although active and retired service members will find Nords' financial and retirement suggestions most helpful, all Bogleheads are welcome and will enjoy hearing about Nords' experiences with FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early). :D

8:00 pm Eastern | 7:00 pm Central | 6:00 pm Mountain | 5:00 pm Pacific | 2:00 pm Hawaii

Image

Nords is a long-time member of the Bogleheads forum and a valued poster who is dedicated to helping U.S. Military personnel, retired and active, with their finances and retirement. He has contributed to the BH Wiki article: Military Finances , and in 2019, Nords was profiled in Forbes: This Former Naval Officer Retired At 41 And Despite Two Recessions Has Seen His Portfolio Triple Over 17 Years.

Retired at age 41 after 20 years with the U.S. Navy's submarine force, Nords lives in Hawaii and reports he is "an enthusiastic surfer, an omnivorous reader, a martial arts student, and a veteran of many chaotic home-improvement projects." He is the author of "The Military Guide to Financial Independence and Retirement" (the book's royalties go to military charities):
[Review:]Taking Bob Dylan’s lyrics as a departure point – “A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do” – this book provides servicemembers, veterans, and their families with a critical road map for becoming financially independent prior to committing themselves to full-time retirement in their 60s or 70s. Indeed, taking himself as a prime example, the author outlines how military personnel who are retiring in their early 40s can become happily semi-retired and thus avoid the necessity of pursuing what is often a less than fulfilling second career in government or the corporate world. Emphasizing the importance of family, lifestyle, and bridge careers, the book goes a long way in providing answers to one of today’s most important career transition questions: “What do you want to do with the rest of your life?" . . .
Read what Nords posted HERE about himself and what he plans for our meeting :D

As you can see from his Bogleheads avatar above, Nords has his investments on auto-surf 8-)

Hello South Florida Bogleheads! 🌴 8-)

The Bogleheads Life Stage Chapters are jointly hosting a zoom meeting tomorrow, Tues. Feb. 4, 2025, at 8:00 pm ET , with guest Adam B. Cordover, a Florida-based lawyer who specializes in Collaborative Family Law. The topic will be: "How to Use Prenuptial and Postnuptial Agreements as Financial Planning Tools", and will be followed by open Q&A.

8:00 pm Eastern | 7:00 pm Central | 6:00 pm Mountain | 5:00 pm Pacific | 2:00 pm Hawaii

In this interactive discussion, you will learn how prenuptial and postnuptial agreements can help with and provide clarity on asset protection, asset management, debt responsibilities, and inheritance planning, especially in cases of second marriages, blended families, or where private or family businesses are involved. The topic is relevant for all Life Stages, regardless of marital status. Adam will provide a broad overview of the topic, and answer general questions, but obviously cannot render state-specific or individualized legal advice.

The meeting will be recorded and you can come with your video off.

If you wish, you can submit your question via this Google Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... sp=sharing
