Wallace and Gromit Vengeance Most Fowl, on Netflix. It's not deep or profound, but for Wallace and Gromit fans you will love seeing these characters again. It's not "The Wrong Trousers", but it's creative and enjoyable. If you're not a fan, or don't like stop-action animation, you will wonder what the fans see.

This is one of those reasons why I can watch movies again. I forget what is in them so quickly!Weathering wrote: ↑Sat Jan 04, 2025 3:55 pmWhen there is only one person on the bus.
There are hints because this character has vivid dreams earlier in the movie.
I did give my full attention to this movie not that many days ago but though I know who that person must be .... I don't remember either dream.

The quote function no longer automatically mentions the original name of what's being discussed, nor necessarily quotes the original thread.
Since the forum changed the quote options for threads recently, it can be difficult, at least for me, to understand what movie, book, or TV show subsequent posters are referring to, at least w/o going back into the thread and finding the original quoted thread which might be a string of comments in the past.
I have real interest in the comments, but have given up trying to ID what subsequent posters are commenting upon, so if there's no ID of the movie (music, book, tv show), I move on. Otherwise it seems to me that you're PM'ing with all of us having to watch.
Respectfully, perhaps please review your comment before posting to confirm you mention the movie's name.
Thanks
One should quote enough of (or otherwise make obvious) what one is replying to in order keep the thread of the conversation intact. It takes a bit of editorial effort to preserve the context.
And it goes beyond the title of a book. The subject (aka point of) one's comments should not be a mystery for the reader to solve.

To Dust A dark, disturbing and some might find it offensive movie. I was tempted to turn it off several times, but it was worth watching.

Hachi (2012). Oh my! This is the most heartwarming and sad movie I have ever seen. I couldn’t hold back the tears. Highly recommend it, but have a box of Kleenex nearby.

In deciding whether or not to watch the movie all I went on was a picture I was seeing of it. It did not seem that enticing. But decided to take a chance with it. Paid off. Well-done movie. Unpredictable. Kept my attention.

Smile 2. Same formula as the first one so I can't say I'd recommend it unless you want to see more of the same. Original was a cool idea for a horror movie though. Hoping they dont make another since there's really no need.

Hard to find (due to music licensing issues) 1978 tale of pioneering disc jockey Alan Freed, who in the 1950s helped introduce and popularize rock and roll, and is often credited with coining the term "Rock 'n' Roll." Director Floyd Mutrux and writer John Kaye's creation is highly fictionalized, but very entertaining, with great performances from Tim McIntire, Fran Drescher, Jay Leno, Laraine Newman, Jeff Altman, and Moosie Drier. Featuring musical performances by Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Frankie Ford, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and Brooklyn Dreams as "Professor La Plano and The Planotones". I find it an especially fascinating look at grown-up 50s kids looking at themselves, and those days, 20 years later.

A Different Man. Story of a man with a disorder that causes tumors to grow uncontrolled on his face. He decides to undertake a medical procedure to attempt to cure the tumors and it works. Making him a different man, with a very different life. Sebastian Stan won the Golden Globe which was well deserved. The other actor actually has the condition Stan portrays and is also excellent. Highly recommend this one, it starts slow but is a really interesting story that is well written and acted.

Thanks! That's the most enjoyable kids movie I've seen in quite some time. A lot of the scenes were movie parodies that will be recognized by the older viewers. A few scenes were outright hilarious.
I'm not familiar with these characters, but the complete collection (4 episodes) is included as part of Amazon Prime. (I'll post in [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?] after I watch it.)

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
To Die For - 1995. On the Criterion Channel.
Gus Van Sant directs Nicole Kidman, Joaquin Phoenix, Illeana Douglas, Dan Hedaya, Wayne Knight, and more in this twisted black comedy about a would-be TV celebrity with who bulldozes those in her path, including her husband.
Striving to build a career for herself in a two-man cable TV station, Suzanne Stone (Kidman) resents pressure from her husband to spend more time at the family restaurant, and start a family. So she seduces a teen-age boy and convinces him to kill the husband. But that doesn't end it. Script by Buck Henry, from the novel by Joyce Maynard, which was in turn inspired by the real-life high school media coordinator and seductress Pamela Smart.
One of Kidman's best performances. But I also like Illeana Douglas in this. Douglas was a struggling actress, Martin Scorcese's girlfriend for years, granddaugter of Melvin Douglas, who brings a nice touch of acid to her role as the husband's ice-skating sister. I'm not a big fan of Van Sant's movies, but I do like this one.

This belongs in the TV topic but since you put it here ...
Watched the first three and thought that they were uniformly excellent.
Laboriously watched Season 4. Except for the last episode. Just could not force myself to watch yet one more episode of a decidedly greatly inferior season to the prior three.

DH picked Jerry McGuire starring Tom Cruise, Renee Zellweger and Cuba Gooding Jr., to watch (he hadn't ever seen it and I haven't seen it since it first came out). Now I know why I never sought to watch it again. Meh.
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Absolutely loved it when I saw it at the movies. Not as good the second time around -- probably watching it via VHS tape.
But who can ever forget: "Help me help you!!!"
It was also an excellent introduction to Renee Zellweger.

The Major and the Minor - 1942. On the Criterion Channel.
Billy Wilder directs Ginger Rogers and Ray Milland in a frothy romantic comedy about a 30-year-old woman pretending to be a child, while falling in love with an army officer who can't get an overseas post during the war.
Wilder is one of the great directors of American film history, having an idiosyncratic blend of sour, sharp, and sugary notes in his productions. This was his first American movie as director (he'd made movies in Germany, and written for a number of Hollywood productions like Ninotchka), and contains some of his trademark items. His star, Rogers, pretending to be a child to get a half-price ticket for the train, then forced to continue the masquerade by circumstances. The sharp dialog. The in-jokes: Rogers's character pretends to be Swedish on the train, to justify her size to the conductor, and when he challenges her to say something in Swedish, she says "I want to be alone", a Greta Garbo joke. The major asks her character if she can dance, and she says po-faced, "I can dance a little", a reference to her earlier movies with Astaire. Etc. Not sure this kind of thing ages well. And then there's the whole issue with a grown man with a fiancée, falling for an ostensible 12-year-old... Very Wilder sour.
Rogers's real mother, Lela Rogers, a journalist and producer, and one of the first female recruits in the Marine Corps during WWI, plays her onscreen mother here.
Would I recommend it? If you like fluffy romantic comedies with some sour notes. Rogers is, as usual, tremendous thoughout. And Milland plays a fairly difficult role quite well.

Tank - 1984. On Netflix.
Marvin J. Chomsky directs James Garner, James Cromwell, Shirley Jones, Jennilee Harrison, and C. Thomas Howell in a movie about an army NCO rampaging through rural Georgia in a Sherman tank.
A pretty bad movie. It reminded me of Iron Man, but without the great visuals. The protagonist, an Army sergeant Mack Carey played by Garner, develops a nasty enemy with no scruples who is difficult to confront. In this movie, a small-town thoroughly corrupt Georgia sheriff, who frames the sergeant's son and sends him to a work farm, promising regular sodomy and eventual murder if the sergeant doesn't pay up regularly. With no recourse left, Carey dons his suit of steel, an old Sherman tank he's restored, and somehow has ammo for, to bust his son out, then heads for the state line with him and the local prostitute. With the help of his avengers, played here by a farmer and a Hell's Angel, he manages to foil the evil-doer without anyone being killed. Cromwell plays a deputy, and does a nude scene (ick). Harrison plays the girl who is along for the tank ride and gets to shoot at some lawmen with the machine gun on the tank.
Garner is great and thoroughly believable, Jones is criminally under-used as the mom, the rest are just OK. Lots of wrong notes in this script by Dan Gordon (who's still working), bit too raw for my taste, and the idea of a Sherman marching through Georgia... Recommend not watching it.

Noryang: Deadly Sea (Amazon - 2023 - Korea/subtitled)
Apparently the 3rd movie in a trilogy covering the exploits of Admiral Yi Sun-shin during the 7 year Imjin war between Joseon (Korea), their allies from the Ming Dynasty vs the invading Japanese, which took place from 1592 to 1598. Noryang is an account of the final battle of this war. As can be expected, this is a big picture war epic, depicting the brutal fighting that took place during this naval battle. While entertaining, it was also illuminating from a historical point of view as I've never heard of this war. I did find the obvious CGI of the ships in formation and their movements a bit disconcerting and not realistic.

Emilia Perez. Jaques Audiard directs Zoe Saldana, Karla Sofia Gascon and Selena Gomez. A ruthless Mexican cartel leader attempts to live a new life as a woman. A lawyer is enlisted to assist in crafting a new identity and dealing with the many complications that arise. The movie is a musical. The songs are musically slight and often half spoken and half sung, but some are big productions. I enjoyed it all because it's well done and so very different. The three principal actors are very good.
In theaters now and on Netflix. Recommended.

Freaks (1932)
I had pretty low expectations for this movie. It was listed in the B-movie category on Kanopy. It was about circus sideshow performers. I feared it would be exploitative.
However, it turned out to be pretty good. On the surface, it did indeed seem to be exploitative. But after watching it, I find I keep thinking about it. The movie really had the audience on the side of the performers and the villains were the physically perfect people: the acrobat and the strongman, who took advantage of the more vulnerable. Other "normal" people interacted with the performers as equals.
IMdB gave it a 7.8 and Rotten Tomatoes gave it 95%.
I am still thinking about how I feel about this movie; it brings out many mixed emotions. Also to consider is that we are viewing a 1932 movie through a social lens of 2025.

The 1932 view is a high-quality view. One should take it as presented in the movie and look past any present-day distortions.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
The Pajama Game, starring Doris Day and John Raitt. Doris Day is a union steward in a pajama factory, John Raitt is the factory supervisor. Of course, sparks fly between them, even as their romance is thwarted by the union's effort to get a 7.5 cent per hour raise.
The movie was light on plot, and predictable in its romance, but it had lots of fantastic singing and dancing scenes. Some surprising facts: it was one of the first movies choreographed by Bob Fosse, and John Raitt was Bonnie Raitt's father.
I really enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.
Highly recommended, if you like singing and dancing musicals. (Some people don't...)

The Goldfinch — Prime
A story about a boy that steals a painting from an art museum and the impact of that painting on the boy’s life. The movie is 2.5hrs long. The book is almost 800 pages. I haven’t read the book, but I expect a lot was cut out. The film has a good cast. And I recommend.

Anora (2024)
A sex worker marries the son of a Russian oligarch. The oligarch's men try to annul the wedding.
Lots of graphic sex scenes, LOTs of cursing. Funny and sad at times. Also one of the best movies of the past year.

I saw this last week and thought it was very good. Started off a little slow but I found myself more interested as it went on.jjunk wrote: ↑Mon Dec 23, 2024 3:15 am Conclave. As the search begins for a new pope, factions within the cardinals cause inordinate drama amidst a lust for power. That's my best attempt at having a movie synopsis that you'd read in the paper. Excellent film with tremendous acting. Even for me, someone who isnt religious, I found the entire process fascinating and needed to read more about how actual conclaves are conducted (turns out, this wasnt far off). I can see this being the Best Picture winner at the Oscars.

A Real Pain. Stars Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin as two Jewish cousins returning to Poland after their grandmothers death. The movie focuses on their contentious and manic relationship. I generally like Eisenberg's stuff but found this underwhelming. There were a few good spots but I dont think I'd recommend it as a rental, maybe pick it up from the library or wait for streaming if you're interested in it.
