Help me choose a water pump

Post by unclescrooge »

Given the devastating fires in Los Angels this week, I'm looking to buy a water pump as a precaution.

My house is much less likely to burn than my neighbors because my house was rebuilt several years ago keeping in mind I live in a wildfire prove area. Hers was built 60 years ago and it's basically a wooden box. Her house would go up like a box of matches and possibly take down mine too.

The idea is to access water from her neighbor's pool and keep her house from going up in flames.

What sort of pump would I need? Can it run on electricity?

Thanks in advance!

This thread is now in the Personal Consumer Issues forum (water pump).
Wiki To some, the glass is half full. To others, the glass is half empty. To an engineer, it's twice the size it needs to be.

A self-contained gasoline powered pump that can generate high GPM (volume) versus PSI (pressure).

A google search of "portable fire pump" will find you options from major retailers. Consider the kits with the intake line and the collapsable hose. You need water volume beyond a garden hose.

They're not unusual as a product in rural areas. You need to calculate the volume of your water source (swimming pool) to see how long the pump could operate.
