IRS PIN for the taxation year 2024
IRS PIN for the taxation year 2024
In the past, there were discussions about the timing of receiving the IRS PIN. I received a notification via email today to log on to the account for an IRS notice. Gave me a big scare before I realized what it could be about. Logged on and saw that it was indeed the IRS pin.

Re: IRS PIN for the taxation year 2024
Thanks for heads up. I just tried and got the message that the IRS IP PIN site was down for maintenance until January 6. Perhaps it's too early in the morning for the site to be working, or maybe it's a snow day in Washington, DC.
Re: IRS PIN for the taxation year 2024
In that vein, I remember for tax year 2023 I received my IRS PIN in the mail in a letter dated December 26, 2023. In previous years, I had been getting the PIN online when I logged into my IRS account.
That letter said I was getting the PIN because my "account login method on IRS.GOV ... is no longer valid" and I hadn't created an ID.Me account access method. As of today, I have not set up a ID.Me account access method. I waited because I figured by the end of 2024 login.gov would have been set up as another way to login, as I think was promised years ago. As far as I can tell, it has not.
I have not as yet received a PIN for tax year 2024 in the mail. My questions:

- Can I expect to receive a PIN in the mail again for tax year 2024?
- Is login.gov ever going to be set up as a method to login to IRS accounts?

It seems that ID.Me is very popular, so I finally decided to set up such an account, and the process was satisfactory.obafgkm wrote: Mon Jan 06, 2025 7:33 am In that vein, I remember for tax year 2023 I received my IRS PIN in the mail in a letter dated December 26, 2023. Re: IRS PIN for the taxation year 2024
IP PIN now available on IRS website.
Re: IRS PIN for the taxation year 2024
I regret that I requested IRS PIN for filing tax. My efile was rejected several times until I got it right last year. Not sure about you, now I do not remember how I got it working last time; time is a mystery.
Re: IRS PIN for the taxation year 2024
In my time as a volunteer tax preparer with Tax-Aide, we get several people every year who forget they have an IP PIN. We ask every person about it, but some don't realize it's a new PIN every year or they didn't bother to read the IRS message. So their e-file returns get rejected. A volunteer has to call and explain what's going on, wait for the taxpayer to retrieve the IP PIN (often difficult due to being unfamiliar with the task), and finally re-file.wander wrote: Mon Jan 06, 2025 9:53 am I regret that I requested IRS PIN for filing tax. Getting an IP PIN is worth it for some people, probably for most who do so. But a few people end up worse off in terms of time and energy spent.
If you get one, I recommend setting an annual reminder with a message like... "Hi <name>, early in January I expect to receive correspondence from the IRS about an IP PIN. Read it and take the appropriate action. Eventually use the IP PIN to e-file. Otherwise some dude on Bogleheads will say 'I told you so.' Best wishes to my future self."

I am in the same situation. Will we receive a letter in the mail with PIN again for tax year 2024?
Re: IRS PIN for the taxation year 2024
Thank you for the reminder.
It's found under the "profile" section (for those like me who forget where it is on a yearly basis).

Can you make an IRS Online Account and then get a PIN online or do you have to let them mail you one?
Re: IRS PIN for the taxation year 2024
That’s how I get my IP PIN every year.GS wrote: Mon Jan 06, 2025 1:37 pm Can you make an IRS Online Account and then get a PIN online or do you have to let them mail you one?

Yes. From your online account, click on the "Profile" (or "My Profile") link at the top right of the screen. At the bottom of that page, you can enroll in PIN generation (for one year or ongoing years) and it will generate your first PIN to use this year. After that, you can return to the profile screen to see the current pin, in case you lost track of it.GS wrote: Mon Jan 06, 2025 1:37 pm Can you make an IRS Online Account and then get a PIN online or do you have to let them mail you one?

Every time I have flown the past year (domestic) TSA always uses facial recognition against my driver's license.

You might enjoy (or not?) the book by Hill; fascinating but scary in a way.j.click wrote: Mon Jan 06, 2025 4:21 pm Every time I have flown the past year (domestic) TSA always uses facial recognition against my driver's license.

I logged in and don't see it. Where are you guys seeing it?
Nevermind...I found it under Your Profile.

Re: IRS PIN for the taxation year 2024
Strange but I used to go online and request an IP pin each year, but this year it was already assigned to me.
Found it on Your Account / Profile as others had reported.
Not sure when they started assigning automatically.
I know that used to be the case if you reported ID theft, but I have never done so.

I have no insider information, but I'm in the same situation (still refuse to use ID.me) and last year received my PIN letter in the mail on January 20. I don't plan to file my taxes before March or so, so I'll just wait for now and hope they mail it again.obafgkm wrote: Mon Jan 06, 2025 7:33 am In that vein, I remember for tax year 2023 I received my IRS PIN in the mail in a letter dated December 26, 2023. Re: IRS PIN for the taxation year 2024
I signed up this last week, for the first time, and was given the option to automatically assign in future years, which I selected. I printed it out for my tax folder, and saved it in my password manager, as it doesn't seem retrievable online after it's assigned. The "Identity Protection PIN" section of my profile says "You are eligible to enroll into the IP PIN Program."HereToLearn wrote: Fri Jan 10, 2025 2:24 pmSame!beyou wrote: Wed Jan 08, 2025 12:35 am Strange but I used to go online and request an IP pin each year, but this year it was already assigned to me.

Re: IRS PIN for the taxation year 2024
That's weird. But I am seeing the same thing. I signed up (for the first time) earlier this week and it generated the 2024 PIN for me and displayed it. Luckily, I stored it in my password manager as well. Because today, when I revisited my Profile to look at the PIN, it is gone and it looks like it wants me to enroll again. I'm going to let things sit for a while and see if the previously generated 2024 PIN comes back.NatureBoy wrote: Sat Jan 11, 2025 7:36 amI signed up this last week, for the first time, and was given the option to automatically assign in future years, which I selected. Same for me but I'm sure the site is still somewat being updated. Lots of functions are temporarily unavailable to me. I suggest giving it a week or so.PaunchyPirate wrote: Sat Jan 11, 2025 7:56 amThat's weird. But I am seeing the same thing.
