There are at most 50 posts per page.

Not always. I get 100 posts per page.

How you ask? From another topic,

Scrolling down long forum pages can be tedious for mobile users. Until now, readers were forced to scroll through 50 posts before getting to the bottom of the page.

In collaboration with the site owners, we have added a feature which helps mobile users shorten the time to scroll through a page. Members are now able to change the number of posts they see on a page.

Look at your User Control Panel -> Display options and Topics per page: and Posts per page: settings.

As an aside, there does not seem to be a way of getting to say page 18 of that topic?

There are at most 50 posts per page.

You can go to a page by appending "?start=X"
where X = (pageNum - 1) * 50

For page 18, it's (18 - 1 ) * 50 = 850
viewtopic.php?t=196884&start=850

That is extremely valuable to me for the way I sometimes do things.
