IRS IP PIN - Available Again 1/6/2025

Post by shelterinplace »

The IRS IP PIN system was down for scheduled maintenance until today, 1/6/2025.

I can now apply for an Identity Protection PIN, but I have to create a new account with ID.Me.

I have concerns about facial recognition and giving my most personal information to a third party... and to the government as well.

I also have concerns about ID.Me's verification process. Many have been unable to get verified.

Is facial recognition still required???

How are people feeling about ID.Me?

If I apply today for a PIN will it come in time for me to complete my 2024 taxes?

I want to go back in time and take my dog with me... I'd be happy without the internet and a cell phone, but my dog definitely wants a truck.

I would think so; with an extension, your taxes aren't due until October 15.

Personally, I would not be concerned about given them your face. Most faces are probably already in Clearview's database by now.

What information are they asking for that the government probably doesn't already have (remember, Palantir is a government contractor and they have hoovered up all the data in the known universe).

I've accepted ID.me as a fact of life and have gone through their process to get it set up. I don't like it, but I want to have an IRS account and am not willing to forego one for the rest of my life. Set up process worked for me, I can't speak for others.

There have been half a dozen or so threads on this topic here in recent memory. You can take a look at them to get an idea.

I somewhat understand not wanting to trust a third party but the government has your info and if you have a passport you sent them a picture of your face so I don't quite understand the thinking around that one.

All said and done I created the account and it was pretty easy.

and if you have entered the US through immigration, they have your picture -- often looking pretty beat up after a long international flight. It isn't pretty.

I've had a PIN for a couple of years now, so not trying to apply for one. But I'd like to get my PIN for 2024 taxes and just logged in again but don't find how to access it. Also, for 2023 taxes I was mailed a letter in late 2022 with the PIN, but so far have not received one for 2024 taxes.

Will I be receiving a letter for 2024 taxes? Is the PIN available on the IRS website?

Thanks.

You can request an IP PIN without logging in. It may not be fun.

See also the linked FAQ.

Apparently. they don't normally mail you the PIN after the first time, but expect you to log on. If you cannot do that, they say you can call. See links above.

Your PIN can be found in your "Profile" on the IRS website. Look for the Profile link in the upper right corner of the screen after you sign in.
Edited to add: That's where I enrolled earlier this week and found the 2024 PIN it generated. However, today when I just went in to verify things, it no longer shows my 2024 PIN. Instead, it looks like it wants me to enroll again to get a PIN. Weird. I'm going to let it sit for a while before I try again.

The link provided above by ncdcpa includes the following:

"The IP PIN is generally available in your online account starting in mid-January through mid-November."

So I guess I'l have to be more patient.

I enrolled and obtained my IP PIN from the IRS site on January 6, 2025. The verbiage supplied with the PIN says:
This IP PIN must be used when filing any federal tax returns during the current year (2025), including prior year returns. (Example: It must be used if filing for tax year 2024, 2023, and 2022.)
So any PIN issued prior to 2025 is moot. I suggest simply enrolling again, getting your 2025 PIN, and use it to file your 2024 taxes.

I just received my IP PIN # via US mail. It came one week earlier than it did last year.

I download my PIN every year around this time. Just logged in to my account, went to profile, and the PIN was there. Same was true for my wife's PIN when she logged into her account. Strangely, when she logged in, the name on the account was mine, but as expected, the PIN was different. I suppose this is because we have always filed jointly.

Thanks for the reminder. My spouse and I logged in today and did PDF printouts of our 2025 PINs. Glad my spouse took the time to make an ID.me account, didn't have one last year and had to hope the mailed one wasn't lost in the mail (or accidentally thrown out).
