Will retire from academia at the end of the year. Then will start another univeristy. Some retirements don’t stick.

I just joined, and this is my 1st post on Bogleheads, but I'm planning to post some account questions shortly after I do some further research.
Entering the Retirement door Oct 5th 2024, I'm 66, I've worked in healthcare for the past 45 years.
I may work some perdiem hours, we'll see how that goes, or maybe I'll find some other partime job in my field.
Look forward to reading all of the topics here, and honing my financial skills..

Officially, I am resigning to take a 6 month sabbatical. In reality, I am considering the option to retire depending on how it goes. I see it as a test drive before I join Ms, Grifin whom retired in Aug 2023.
Will keep y’all updated

Cheers,
Grifin
Grifin wrote: Thu Feb 29, 2024 1:23 pm Almost two weeks in and I am doing well; mentally and physically. I realize now how much my demanding, round-the-clock job had took a toll on me. At this time, I am regrouping mentally and savoring this break. In the meantime, I am exercising, working down that mile-long list of things I have put off, and reading! Also, reconnecting with family near and far.

Grifin
Thanks for sharing your Two-Weeks-Into-Retirement story! For sure your retirement will be a load off your shoulders and mind :D There is nothing more pleasurable than a few days of retirement with no demands made upon our time. We wish you all the best and please let us know when you reach the end of that mile-long list of things to do LOL!
I am making it official. I am not going back to work and officially retiring. The 'sabbatical' allowed me to test drive retirement before I commit to the lifelong endeavor. It's been liberating.

Cheers, Griffin

Hi YHD and welcome to the Retirement Roll Call and this Very Happy Class of 2024!

Retiring from academia is a good retirement - actually, retiring from anything is a good retirement :D And if it "doesn't stick" and the other university draws you out of retirement - let us know and we'll reboot you :D Best wishes for a full and freeing retirement!

Here are some thoughts from other Bogleheads on the retiring decision -
randomizer wrote: Fri Apr 20, 2018 8:19 pm I’ve been retired for a few months now, my employer just doesn’t know it yet. :D
invst65 wrote: Fri Apr 20, 2018 4:12 pm
GCD wrote: Fri Apr 20, 2018 12:54 pm I see it often said that you need to retire to something, not from something. Or words to that effect.
I think that is probably good advice for someone considering early retirement.

I was ready and waiting for it, but at age 67 I was forced into retirement by my employer and as I was being shown out the door I was starting to enjoy the feeling that my career was finally over and I could do what I wanted from now on even though I had no idea what that would be.

And a year and a half later I like waking up in the morning without any goals to achieve. Well, I do have some but I should call them soft-goals. Nobody is going to hold me accountable for not achieving them. And I have nothing to prove - even to myself.

In this respect, retirement has been the kind of singularity in my life I always thought it would be. If I had been able to retire early I'm not sure it would have been the same. I suspect there would have been a constant gnawing feeling about the need to do something and I wouldn't have felt as free as I do now.

Finally engineered my own severance and will at least take some time off until end of the year. If I can convince DW that all things are good, this little break maybe permanent! :beer

P.S. In mid-40s and have enough financial resources (~50x) so it's more of mental block for DW right now.

How's the 2024 Retirement Class doing? I'm a little over 1 month into retirement and have been enjoying every minute.
Ohh yes I have been moonlighting a little at my old job, but very occasionally.
Planning for my SS check at my 1st max in April
Happy holidays too all!!!

Loving it. I’m seven months in. Health is better, I’m happier and it really is as great as everyone says. One thing I have noticed is that it is a touch hard to down shift. There are so many things to do and my propensity is to go hard and do a lot. That’s exhausting. Learning how to take it easy is harder than I thought. Sometimes doing nothing makes me feel a bit guilty but I’m working through it.

Official retirement date is 12/31/2024. But my last day at work was 11/15/2024 due to un-used vacation days. Currently I am visiting family members and friends overseas. It’s nice that I don’t need to check my laptop or phone for messages.

Yes definitely hard to disengage fully, I think working a couple days of week will allow me to make the transition more smoothly, but enjoying the free time, I've go many hobbies now that I can enjoy more fully.

It’s basically involving recognizing that the large tech company I was working for is looking at getting more efficient (cost effective) then share with the management ladder that I’m looking to exit but willing to make sure the transition is smooth. So when the time is right and the group was give a mandate to “right size” the org, they put me up and then offer some good packages to transition out properly.

I retired July 3rd 2024 after 41 years as a software engineer, working in defense.
I was 62 at the time.
My wife works 38 hours/week and provides the med insurance. She went back to work in Feb, had been off since before covid.
Our youngest son lives with us, he is developmentally disabled and goes to a day program.
I had been working only 28 hours a week for the last nine months, but was more than ready to drop my commute of 45 miles, which could take 2 hours some evenings if there was a problem on the pike.
I felt like I was at good stopping point and had had enough.
My cooking is getting much better :D since July.

Retired in March of this year. Miss the work and the people but not the politics. My manager asked be back for 2025, cannot return for 1 year, and thinking of going back. Depends on hours and money. I have worked so hard for so many years its tough waking up and not having a career related goal to work towards.
