I would never use the online version.

If Turbotax deletes the desktop version, I will use something else on desktop.

Why ?

I have moved back and forth over the years. Both worked well for me. And if you file electronically, you are allowing Intuit to take data from your desktop anyway. So not a huge difference in privacy.

I used desktop long ago, moved to online for convenience of avoiding installation and support issues. Went back to desktop just for cost and forms mode last year, but would happily revert to online if desktop was no longer offered.

I always delete my private data on the Intuit website. I don't use uSoft365, Onedrive or iCloud either.

I like using it local on my machine, which does not require storing data in the cloud.

The most important missing feature is the editable forms mode. TurboTax Online allows you to see the forms, but all editing has to be done in the interview. TurboTax desktop allows you to edit lines directly on the forms, including worksheets.

I often use the forms mode & edit. I find it very useful for chasing abbreviations. Online systems generally require sequential entries, which makes it a pain to see the overview of the details.

I've paid an accountant the last 8 years to do my taxes but am going back to doing it myself this year.

My situation is pretty simple: just w2 income and brokerage account from fidelity. No investment property.
The only somewhat complicated thing is backdoor roths and household employee taxes.

Can the online turbo tax do both household employee taxes and backdoor roth just fine? I've used it before and don't want to bother with downloaded version. A decade ago, it handled household employee no problem, but I've only started backdoor roth a few years ago.

I have heard that there were issues when trying to run on a Mac years ago. When looking at recent posts on the TurboTax forum, it suggests that there are still issues. It's not worth the risk to me.

The forum post is correct. TurboTax Standard is a Windows-only product. There is no Mac version.

TurboTax Standard is a Canadian product, and the forum is hosted on intuit.ca. That's why the user is asking about the 8-return limit. There's even a 20-return edition of TurboTax Canada. The Canada Revenue Agency doesn't have the same 5-return limit as the IRS.

The US product comes in Basic, Deluxe, Premier, and Home & Business editions, all of which are available for Windows and Mac. TurboTax Business is a different product that is Windows-only.

I don't really understand why I want a hard copy installed, anyway.

Even some accountants don't always do backdoor roth right. I wouldn't expect the software to intuitively do it, but you should be able to manipulate it.

When I used to do my taxes with TT it was usually (if I remember correctly) effective price $30 for deluxe+1 state (prepare only, not to efile through TT).

I was using TurboTax installed version for Windows, but that changed a couple years ago when my computer crashed, the disk died and was unrecoverable, and I didn't have a paper or backup copy of my tax returns. Then I got a note from the IRS...

Don't do what I did, back up your computer!

From now on, I'm using the web version of TT because they -- I think -- would have the records. Also I'm printing the forms -- duh! I've got backup software on the computer that runs daily to a external drive, and also using Microsoft 365 for web-based file backup.

I got a TT warning this year that they aren’t going to support my 2015 iMac anymore so I’m searching for a solution. I don’t want to replace it yet. Maybe I’ll have to go with a competitor’s tax program. I’ve been with TT since 1994, thirty years.

You do realize this is not much of a deal. For example FreeTaxUSA is free federal and $15 state returns and may contain more forms then this version of TT. I realize there is a place for the more expensive packages, but they are not really justified for most returns. For me, I generally use FTU. The exception was last year where I had some estate payouts which had certain uncommon things FTU would not do related to this particular estate. For that I used OLT which is very capable but not for everyone.

The Quicken offer said for new subscribers but I just used a different email to set up a new account, then imported my old data file. Worked every year. No mention of it on the Amazon website.

I’ve given up trying to get this offer from Fidelity, so I’m definitely following this thread. The last several years they have not provided a simplified concrete reason why they stopped doing this for me. Probably because I’m a self directed investor without a Fidelity representative but they never said anything about that. They also have had issues with bad actors trying to hack their own free version and mucking up the distribution so it will be interesting to see what happens this year.

No, the Saturday after Black Friday it was for a day. And then a couple days after Christmas. If you install the Keepa Chrome extension, you can see the exact dates and prices. The December deals after Christmas are $1 less than the November deals.

H&R Block has a history of not supporting Form 1116 Schedule B efile, paper filing is required. TurboTax deluxe desktop version has support for this schedule. I not aware of any other issues that H&R Block may have but would probably work nicely for me otherwise. Each tax software package has advantages and disadvantages that may or may not be a issue for the individual filing taxes.

The past few years I have purchased TurboTax on early deals hoping to get a jump on my taxes only to be disappointed when forms and tables were not available until mid January. According to the link, it is the same this year. It validates my decision to try out Freetaxusa, and not worry about the early TurboTax deals. Hopefully Costco will be offering their annual TurboTax discount in January, which I discovered would have cost me less than the best deal I found in November. If Freetaxusa works out for me then I won't have to bother with TurboTax this year at all.

Maybe that's what made them well to do. I like to call ourselves frugal. Were comfortable enough we wouldn't have to be anymore, but old habits are hard to break.

Currently feeling rather smugly pleased with myself that my $29.99 plus tax Block Deluxe with State was my only Black Friday purchase, that I resisted sirens’ temptations to buy lots of other stuff on Black Friday promotions that neither nor my loved ones have any real need nor desire for. Budgetary and carbon impact of my Black Friday retail activity is therefore de minimis.

If vendor offers product at price X, what is the advantage of paying X+20 or X+10?

We don’t worry about costs for some leisure activities because we were diligent at getting the best price or the best value for products earlier. And it is fun to get the best price for some things like tax software, or close to it.

As others have said it is the camaraderie. Maybe a better word would be frugal rather than cheapskate. A cheapskate doesn't like to spend money so they would go to the library and have a tax volunteer do the taxes for them. From my observation over the years these individuals will:

1) Never own a smart tag even though they travel toll roads everyday.
2) Return live xmas trees with the tinsel a few days after xmas.
3) Get a refund from Costco on a mattress after several years of use and say it wasn't exactly what they wanted.
4) Will go to happy hour buffets, drink water and leave no tip.
5) For a company lunch that is paid for by the boss they will order the most expensive entree on the menu even though they would prefer the lower price offering.
6) During group luncheons they will not put in their fair share of the bill.

It's ingrained...maybe taught me by relatives who lived through the Great Depression. (Waste not; want not.)

Shop around for the best price? Always, especially generic Splenda, vehicles, instant coffee or creamer, protein shakes, any software, computers, meds, travel, and more.

Your perspective is all wrong. It is not $10. It is ~30% more expensive right now. And the software is missing forms until at least late January, so buying it early has no benefit. Why would you knowingly pay 30% more for anything?

$10 is 1.5 good craft beers at a local brewery. Much rather give them the money.
