PayPal issue (resolved)

Post by student »

About a month ago, I needed to purchase something for an organization. This merchant (reputable) uses PayPal as the payment processor. During the checkout, it seems that I had to setup a PayPal account, I entered my email address, organization's credit card number and other info, then the final step was a texted code to phone number for verification. The organization phone number is not for a cell phone. So I did not complete this step and abandoned the process. As far as I can tell, the account has been setup but not activated. After abandoned the process, I realized that there was a way to pay without setting up an account and PayPal just handled the payment, and this was the way we paid for the purchase.

A couple of weeks after that, I started receiving (so far twice) email from "PayPal" with subject title "Invoice from Don't recognize the seller? Quickly let us know <phone number>" As far as I know, it is not a PayPal phone number. I called PayPal but I would not given them my name as I don't want to accidentally activated the account. Because of that, the rep could not tell me anything associated with this account and suggested me to forward the email to their phishing department, and watch out for charges.

I did not enter any personal credit card information during the process, and the organization had cancelled the old credit card. Is there anything that I need to do at this point? Thanks.

Update: Thanks for all the replies. I will treat these messages as spam/phishing.

That looks exactly like a scam email I received recently. If you click on the link it takes you to an โ€œinvoiceโ€. However the link itself builds the fake invoice from the contents of the link.

A portion of the scam email.
Here's your invoice
Don't recognize the seller? Quickly let us know (๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ—) ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ”-๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ–๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ sent you an invoice for $399.99 USD
Due on receipt.

You don't have any payments with this seller in the last year.
Invoice details
Cheers

There are numerous flavors of PayPal phony e-messages.

Forward those emails to spoof@paypal.com every time you get one.

"Thank for your submission" reply will arrive immediately. "We're continuously working to counteract fraud, including phishing emails, websites, and text messages. We work with law enforcement around the world to stop online criminals."

You'll be assigned a case number which will protect you if any fraudsters actually achieve a real charge against you.

Thanks. I forwarded them to phishing@paypal.com as suggested by the rep. It seems strange that these happened about two weeks after the purchase.

I get these scam emails weekly in my email account I only use for online order purchases.

I'm getting those emails too. I usually report them but we're just supposed to delete them and forget it. I guess there's nothing they can do.
