Primary account holder not paying credit card bill

Post by Paullmas »

I am an authorized user on a credit card that where another is the primary cardholder.
The primary cardholder is not paying their bill.
The card issuer is placing this non-payment information on my credit report affecting my credit score.
As this debt is not my obligation, how to do I correct my credit report?
Just say no to international.

The first thing you should do is contact the credit card issuer and have yourself removed as an authorized user.

You may want to review the terms and conditions of any agreement you signed to be added as an authorized user.

The policies of credit card issuers may vary, Capital One, for example, says that late or missed payments can affect the credit of both the primary card holder and the authorized user.https://www.capitalone.com/learn-grow/m ... zed-users/

Conversely, people often add their children as Authorized user specifically to give them their shared credit ratings. So, yeah, I can see an issue if the main account holder is not paying the bill! Close that down ASAP so it won't taint you further (and I know nothing about the contract, just that is apparently works both ways).
Salvia Clevelandii "Winifred Gilman" my favorite. YMMV; not a professional advisor.

Curious what the issue is as the only authorized user on any card I have would be a family member in my own house.

Would not be hard to track down or ask about said bill payments...
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. Hit it.

Unfortunately you will still be penalized by the late payments even after you are removed from the cc. Do it a sap as the longer the late pay the more your score will decrease. So just as a pas, if you are an authorized user once you get your own cc and a good SS core, remove yourself from a cc you have no control over.

You might put a letter of explanation on your credit report with the 3 agencies. The late pays will stay with you for 7 years but it will gradually improve and be much better around 2 years.

As previously stated by 123, the first and most important thing to do is to call the number on the back of the card and have yourself removed as an authorized user. Do this immediately. Then just wait and see what happens. If the stars are aligned in your favor, the entire account will disappear from your credit report and that will be that.

If it happens to be the case that you don't actually have the physical card and were just piggybacking on some random persons account to juice your score, then that call to the credit card company might be a bit more difficult.

OP can chime in but I would guess an x-spouse, or soon-to-be so.

In addition to the great ideas already mentioned, I’d send a certified letter…signature required, to the individual stating as of this date and current debt level on the cc, I no longer……

Folks may think this is trivial. That said, if this situation enters a courtroom, it would be helpful for the deciding official to have proof you directed the user the financial obligations for this card are theirs only….

Little things like this help sway the court so they can make a clear decision on who should pay.
