The Cat'sMeow, on Amazon Prime.
This is a 2001 mystery/drama starring Kirsten Dunst, Eddie Izzard, Edward Herrmann, and Cary Elwes. The story is about a fateful weekend excursion involving William Randolph Hearst, Charlie Chaplin, Marion Davies and Louella Parsons aboard Hearst's magnificent private yacht in November of 1924 which resulted in a still-unsolved, hushed-up killing.

It's a great little conspiracy story of a movie, full of period songs, as well. Directed by Peter Bogdanovich.ruralavalon wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 9:56 am The Cat'sMeow, on Amazon Prime.

One of the guests, Elinor Glyn, played by Joanna Lumley, is an interesting character. She married an impecunious husband, and started writing romance novels to support them both. Considered quite scandalous at the time. in 1924 she was in Hollywood doing the screenplay for, and supervising the filming of, her 1907 novel "Three Weeks". A story of a three-week affair by a young Englishman with "the Queen of Sardalia", it was notorious for a scene played upon a tiger-skin rug. The 1924 movie was thought to be lost, but a print was discovered in Russia a couple of years ago, and the restored version premiered in the US this past February.
And Herrmann is great as Hearst, who was by all accounts a seriously creepy and incredibly jealous billionaire.

"The Pope's Exorcist" streaming on Netflix. I liked Russell Crowe's character but in my opinion the movie was just average at best.

Smile 2 in theaters. Lovely little horror movie. If you liked the first one you will like the sequel. Demon that causes its host to commit suicide in front of someone before moving to the witness as the new host is back and the movie is terrific if you don’t mind gore and extreme violence. Kept me guessing as to what was real and what was a demon induced hallucination. The ending opens up the some great story lines for the 3rd movie.
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Anyone have any idea what percent of movies, in general, are horror movies? Though I watch plenty of my share of violent movies .. I tend to avoid horror movies. Thrillers yes, but not horror.mhalley wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 5:17 pm Smile 2 in theaters. Lovely little horror movie. If you liked the first one you will like the sequel. Being There. 1979, 2 hours, 10 minutes, 4.7 stars. Comedy/Satire
I saw it back then, and not since. People keep referring to it; I had it on my DVR from Turner Classics and finally had time to watch. It's good but slower than I remembered. Peter Sellers, Shirley MacLaine, Jack Warden, and Melvyn Douglas were all good. Sellers was always a favorite of mine.
Sellers was nominated for best actor, Douglas won best supporting actor. It was nominated for and won a lot of other awards.

Just watched "A Bronx Tale" on YouTube w/o commercial interruption. It was directed by Robert De Niro and is very authentic to the time and culture.

Come September (1961)
A zany comedy starring Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida where
a wealthy businessman (Hudson), who visits his Italian villa only
one month out of the year (September), decides to come a month
early. This causes his caretaker to panic, who unbeknownst to the
owner, turns the villa into a hotel in months other than September.
The film also stars Bobby Darin, Sandra Dee, and a barely recognizable,
very young, Joel Grey.
I enjoyed it.
Own the DVD.

"Sunset Boulevard" (1950)
A washed up film star (Gloria Swanson) lives in a delusional world of fantasy. A down-in-his luck screenwriter (William Holden) has an "arrangement" with her. A well-done portrayal of mental illness and the dark side of Hollywood.
I'm generally not a fan of melodrama -- and Swanson's character was all about melodrama -- but it was well done. It didn't seem to cross the line much.
I especially liked watching Cecil B. DeMille's role in the film. He handled Swanson's character delicately and with kindness, seemed very human.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
"The Invisible Boy" - 1957. Came with the DVD of "Forbidden Planet" I purchased. It's also up on the Internet Archive.
Herman Hoffman directs Philip Abbott and Richard Eyer in a movie about a supercomputer becoming sentient and attempting to take over the world.
"The Invisible Boy" is a bad movie. Terrible dialogue, mediocre acting, incompetent editing and direction, and risible set design. Expensive special effects are clumsily avoided. The only reason for its existence is the popularity of the figure of Robbie the Robot from the 1956 movie "Forbidden Planet". The producer of this movie had the robot, and the rights to the character, and wanted to use it again. "Colossus: The Forbin Project" is a similar movie, and also bad, but better than this flop.
But buried in this dog of a movie is an interesting and exciting science fiction plot. A rather dark plot. What makes it interesting is the use of a time-travel subplot to explain the existence of Robbie in the movie. The computer, in its attempt to free itself from its underground bunker, hypnotizes the installation's director, Dr. Greenhill, tells him how to build a time machine, and sends him forward in time 400 years to kidnap Robbie on the return of "Forbidden Planet"s space cruiser from Altair IV, the Krell home world. Greenhill brings the robot back to the mid-1950's to do the computer's bidding, but then takes it apart, destroys the time machine, and commits suicide when he realizes what he's done.
I'd like to see a remake with competent movie-makers.

The Face Behind the Mask (1941) Peter Lorre, Evelyn Keyes, Don Beddoe
A disfigured watch-maker with a grudge against society embarks on a life of crime.
A pretty good film noir with an excellent performance by Peter Lorre and good supporting actors too. I decided a long time ago that I would watch anything with Peter Lorre in it and I wasn’t disappointed. It’s not the best but well worth watching.
We streamed it on the Criterion Channel.

His Kind of Woman (1951) Robert Mitchum, Jane Russell, Vincent Price
A deported gangster's plan to re-enter the USA involves skulduggery at a Mexican resort, and gambler Dan Milner is caught in the middle.
I watched this because of the cast and because it was supposed to be an offbeat film noir. It was offbeat alright. We got halfway through and finally gave up on it as not much was happening and it didn’t look like it was going anywhere. It was mainly Mitchum and Russell trading cool one-liners that I read afterward were mostly ad-libbed. This was a Howard Hughes production. After the film was finished Hughes was dissatisfied and ordered the whole thing reshot. Avoid.
We streamed it on the Criterion Channel.

Tonight we're going to revisit "Colors" with Penn and Robert Duvall.

"Yours For the Asking" - 1936. Streamed on the Criterion Channel.
Alexander Hall directs George Raft, Dolores Costello, Ida Lupino, and Reginald Owen in a comedy about con artists attempting to fleece a casino owner for his own good.
An aimless piece of fluff, with a somewhat witless plot. Dolores Costello, called "The Goddess of the Silver Screen", made this just after her divorce from John Barrymore. But the standout is 18-year-old Ida Lupino, playing con artist Gertie Malloy with a freshness and vivacity somewhat foreign to 1930's movies. And looking great while doing so. A British actress who became a respected director, she came from a song-and-dance English music hall family; maybe that has something to do with her acting style.
Recommended only for die-hard Ida Lupino fans.

1948's Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, prized for bringing together The Monster, Dracula, and The Wolfman, with the latter two played by the originals, Bela Lugosi and Lon Chaney, Jr. Dracula and The Monster are being shipped to the USA to be put in some two-bit local horror show. The Wolfman, in his lucid moments, is trying to intercept and destroy them. A&C work in the shipping office and get involved. Dracula's castle is coincidentally on an island easily reachable by rowboat. Dracula has apparently taken over from Baron von F., and wants to put Lou's brain in The Monster to make him more docile. Hijinks ensue. Chaney is the only real actor present. Vincent Price does a cameo as The Invisible Man, but you can't see him.
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
From your description ... I was going to say that reads like something from real life. But did not, thinking it was some fictional person.
Therefore, was I surprised when I came across the movie and saw that it was from real life!
Just finished watching it. I'd grade it no less than an A. Showed a completely different side of the person.
The added factor with me was watching the movie and seeing this person at a younger age in the movie while at the same time seeing C-Span on one of my computer monitors the same person at his current age from his appearance somewhere today.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
"Forbidden Planet" - 1956. On DVD which I purchased.
Fred Wilcox directs Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, Leslie Nielsen, and a host of 60's TV actors in this classic about a flying saucer from Earth finding a missing colony and then being threatened by an alien monster.
What to say about this? If you haven't already seen it, you aren't interested in science fiction. Some great set design and special effects. Mediocre acting, script, and direction. First movie with an all-electronic score. The script, by the undistinguished writer Cyril Hume, contains some elements of Shakespeare's "The Tempest", but to call it an adaptation is a reach. It's a horror movie, I guess, but it's never really scary, and has moments of pure slapstick, involving the actor Earl Holliman, who some will remember as Angie Dickinson's sidekick on "Police Woman".
Pidgeon was never a great actor, but was elevated during WWII by some movies he made with Greer Garson. He has imposing height and a deep voice, which are perfect for this role, of Dr. Edward Morbius, a linguist who uses alien brain augmentation to change his mental powers in order to manipulate the vast powerful machinery left behind by a doomed alien race, the Krell. But he finds out this connection may come at a price. He and his daughter are the sole survivors of the original colony ship, which was destroyed by "something" as it was lifting off when the other colonists attempted to escape. An invisible unstoppable energy monster soon emerges to attack the saucer. Is it the same creature that destroyed the original colony ship and killed the other colonists?
As with "The Invisible Boy" (also by Hume), the back-story is more interesting than the fore-story.
With Francis as the beautiful blonde daughter who has never seen a man before, and with Robbie the Robot, the breakout hit character of the movie. Also with some interesting partially animated scenes showing the innards of the great "Krell machine" -- the animators were borrowed from Disney. The Krell scenes and back-story have inspired a lot of fan fiction.

A great film. The monster gave me the willies as a kid. On later viewing, as an adult, I noticed the astronauts talked like truck drivers (my apologies to truck drivers).littlerfish wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2024 9:05 am "Forbidden Planet" - 1956. On DVD which I purchased.

A great movie if you're a 13-year-old boy. I'll admit I've seen it multiple times and own the DVD.Nicolas wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2024 10:00 amA great film. The monster gave me the willies as a kid. I actually prefer the competing 1955 Universal movie, "This Island Earth" (in Technicolor!). Both movies were stand-outs in the parade of low-budget 1950's black-and-white creature features.

Despite anything negative one might say about Forbidden Planet, it IS a "must see" classic. Being mentioned in Rocky Horror helps justify that.littlerfish wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2024 9:05 am "Forbidden Planet" - 1956. On DVD which I purchased.

Grace of Monaco. I liked it. It's rather fictional.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
I have fond memories of that movie. I remember (hopefully accurately) doing a picture during art free time in 4th grade of the monster breaking through some gate.
One of the local TV stations used to run after school movies and included a lot of Abbott & Costello in their rotation.
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
I tried and failed to finish two different movies.
Joker pt 2. I heard it was a musical but didnt realize that was serious. I made it about 30mins in and called it quits. It sucks because I loved the first movie.
Am I Racist? I knew this wasnt going to be for everyone but I'd heard enough good things to give it a try. I was wrong. It only took 10mins to realize it was horribly done satire. There might have been good points in this movie but I never got to see them because the opening was too dumb to take seriously.

Has anyone seen Joker and Gaga? Is it good?

I found this film to be tedious to watch but I like to see Geo. Raft and Ida Lupino so it wasn’t a total wastelittlerfish wrote: ↑Sun Nov 03, 2024 11:48 am "Yours For the Asking" - 1936.
Did you know that Raft was reputed to be an actual mobster as well as often playing them in the movies?
I just ran across a Guardian article about Lupino you may find interesting. https://amp.theguardian.com/film/2024/n ... ion-series

"Valkyrie" (2008), directed by Bryan Singer ("The Usual Suspects") and starring Tom Cruise as the leader of a July 1944 attempt by members of the German Army to kill Adolf Hitler. The movie does a good job of creating and maintaining suspense even though we know the attempt failed. Tom Wilkinson and Kenneth Branagh are good in supporting roles. I think the movie is pretty good (and better than I expected), not great. I didn't want my time back when it was over but you can lead a full life without seeing it. Modest recommendation. Free on Prime.

My wife chose a movie LATE BLOOMERS to watch before the Monday Night Football game. It is a small movie about a 28 year old girl who breaks her hip and ends up in a group therapy for old people with hip surgery. The girl has led the life of a loser. She meets a Polish lady who is recovering from her own hip injuries and adventures ensue. Funny, sad, uplifting. Karen Gillan stars. On Amazon Prime.

Started off with non-stop action. Then it devolved into non-stop talking.
Gave up on it about 1/3 of the way through it. It's rare for me to give up on movies.

The Tailor of Panama, free on Amazon Prime Video.
Somehow I got this confused with The Quiet American, and I was expecting to see Michael Caine, but instead watched a movie with Pierce Brosnan, Geoffrey Rush, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Pierce Brosnan plays a rogue MI6 agent who is assigned to Panama. Geoffrey Rush is the local tailor who spins him a tall tale about a group called the "Silent Opposition", which Brosnan's character does not believe is true, but he feeds the story to his superiors anyway, for his own benefit.
The scenes between Brosnan and Rush were fantastic! Crackling with energy.
A very young Daniel Radcliffe has a small part - I had to look carefully to see him.
An excellent and amusing film to watch on election night. Highly recommended.

I highly recommend David Thomson's "The New Biographical Dictionary of Film", if you're interested in the actors and directors. Good reading to skip through the dull parts of a movie with. He calls Raft "a bad actor" (I can't disagree), and figures that if he had really been mobbed up, he's have gotten better pictures to act in.Nicolas wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2024 4:34 pm

I’ll check it out, thanks. The thing about Raft is, he looked cool, that’s part of his appeal, regardless of his acting ability. I hadn’t considered the bit about his commanding better parts, could be true.littlerfish wrote: ↑Wed Nov 06, 2024 11:19 amI highly recommend David Thomson's "The New Biographical Dictionary of Film", if you're interested in the actors and directors.
