Mr. Ferri:
Thank you for this excellent interview with Jason Zweig. The background about his parents getting into the antique collecting field and his own part in finding the Frederic Church painting (hidden under a coat of grime) was brand new to me. It led me to read more just about that topic with the painting ending up in the White House collection (Frederic Edwin Church, “Rutland Falls, Vermont” 1848).
The discussion about Benjamin Graham was a real treat. As were some of Jason Zweig's comments, such as "the real product of the financial services industry is complexity" and his observation that "many people who call themselves investors are just speculators" and are really "just guessing." It's a worthwhile listen for Bogleheads, especially those of us who read Mr. Zweig religiously in the Wall Street Journal.
Having attended the same school where Benjamin Graham once taught and where Warren Buffett also was a student, I look forward to the new edition of The Intelligent Investor and Mr. Zweig's commentary. May the book reach a new audience at a time when its wisdom is needed more than ever.
Thanks again for your work on the podcast, Mr. Ferri.

Yes, Jason is definitely a friend of the Bogleheads and one of the "good guys".
When he was with Money Magazine, he attended our second Bogleheads Conference in suburban Philadelphia and brought along a Money photographer. He wrote a great 8-page article with lots of pictures about us with Jack Bogle at the Conference titled "Here Come the Bogleheads". Here's a link to that article:

Re: Jason Zweig is our guest on the "Bogleheads on Investing" podcast!
Rick, thanks for another good podcast. I've read Jason's books that were discussed, but there were new thoughts about how the brain functions when making financial decisions, i.e., which, as he says, "circuits and structures" are guiding our decisions without our being consciously aware of them. I think it shows how much more is being learned about the brain since his book, Your Money & Your Brain, came out around 2007.

Re: Jason Zweig is our guest on the "Bogleheads on Investing" podcast!
Mel and Miriam2, it was great to again read Jason's article on the Bogleheads. Many good financial journalists have covered and described the Bogleheads well, but Jason's, IMO, was a smash hit, right to the end, my favorite part which I just have to repeat here:
One thing that I've often wondered is the identify of the photographer who knew exactly what to ask the Diehards to finally get those smiles. Seems she should get some credit, but we'll probably never know.As I head home, one image hangs in my memory. On Friday afternoon, when the group first gathers outside the hotel, a Boglehead wants to capture a group photo. "Cheese," she calls out from behind her lens, but not everyone smiles. "The market was down today!" she chirps, and grins spread across a few more faces. "The market was down today, and we don't care!" she yells, and now all the Diehards are smiling. Finally the mood is just right. She snaps her picture.

I like Jason Zweig describing the bond between Bogleheads. Dr. Bernstein says that Bogleheads are in a separate (positive) universe. I think this is the bond. So few think like this...although as the internet has built out over the past 25ish years, more of us are finding each other. The moderators here help the bond by keeping out the contentious stuff that can mess up other forums.

Re: Jason Zweig is our guest on the "Bogleheads on Investing" podcast!
Terrific podcast.
I found the stuff on speculation versus investment to be particularly interesting. John C. Bogle, of course, wrote a book entitled Clash of the Cultures: Investment versus Speculation. I don't think he ever tries to define the words; he makes a throwaway remark, p. 36, "The extent of this step-up in speculation—a word I’ve chosen as a proxy for rapid trading of financial instruments of all types—can be easily measured."
I had the same feeling. I was surprised when it ended. I, too, want more. Also, I just finished listening to a two-hour podcast (discussing the book, The Power Broker) and I don't feel there's any reason why a podcast needs to be limited to an hour. One of Wikipedia's slogans is "Wikipedia is not paper," meaning that Wikipedia articles can be of widely varying lengths and almost no maximum size.

I'm pretty sure Rick does all his own editing of the podcast. And it's all volunteer work anyway. Obvious marketing benefit for his practice but he doesn't need to market that anyway. But my point is that one reason podcast lengths get limited is that there's a lot of work there besides just spending another hour interviewing. I think my AV guy who preps my podcast to go live and puts it on Youtube routinely spends 3X the time that I spend on the podcast between preparation and recording. Jason's busy, Rick's busy, and none of us are paying a thing for that content. There isn't even an ad on it. Maybe we should just be grateful it's an hour and not 12 minutes. High quality content creation is valuable stuff to be given for free.nisiprius wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2024 2:42 pm I had the same feeling. I was surprised when it ended. I, too, want more. A one-hour podcast takes about 40 hours each month, including contacting the guest, scheduling an interview time, reading books and articles they wrote, preparing questions, doing the interview, hours and hours of editing, and finally publishing.
Yeah, one hour is long enough.

What I liked about this podcast is that it wasn't the usual focus of indexing, low fees, and stay the course. Rather, it delved into some of Jason's early background such as finding an old painting covered in soot at an auction, then restoring it so that it could find a new home in the White House.

My thanks for those transcripts, which are needed to make sure I've heard podcasts correctly, not just Rick's, but all podcasts with their varying degrees of sound quality.Jon Luskin wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2024 12:04 pmTranscripts are now avaiable at:Jon Luskin wrote: ↑Wed Oct 23, 2024 10:44 am

I have read Jason Zweig's blogs on WSJ for years. Pretty decent but not exceptional commentary.
I recently saw him as a guest on The Compound hosted by Joshua Brown. I was very, very, (should I say very) disappointed that he did not even mention his Dad, Marty Zweig, as a possible if even minor influence on his outlook. I am old so I guess Wall Street Week with Louis Rukheyser is no longer relevant.

According to Jason, his father is not named Marty Zweig and he is not related to Marty Zweig, the mutual fund manager. Jason's father was Irving, a professor at Ohio State and a respected antique dealer.tfunk wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 6:40 pm I have read Jason Zweig's blogs on WSJ for years. Recent genetic data suggests that we all came from the same mother. There is also the identical ancestors point. Mating models also have come to the conclusion that we are at most, 50th (or so) cousins. We are all one, big happy family!
Thanksgiving is at your place this year, right?
