Supply chain disruptions

Post by StevieG72 »

International Longshoremen’s Association workers are going on strike. This impacts ports from Maine to Texas.

I was at Sam’s club and there is panic buying of toilet paper and paper towels. I am having a covid 19 flashback in regards to toilet paper shortages. There was literally not a roll to be found in the store. I stopped at Walmart on my way home and the shelves were light, I anticipate they will be empty by the end of the day. I was able to order a couple of cases online from Sam’s for my business.

Hopefully this will be over sooner vs. later.

Especially since most(all ?) of the toilet paper and paper towels used in the US are made in the US or Canada.

Insane, especially as most TP is made in the U.S. or imported from Canada. Transported by rail or truck!

The media leads their news programs, paper headlines, etc., with this clickbait crap.

People are like sheep and see COVID happening again.

Rush to store to stockpile.

All so predictable.

Where are you located? A lot of stores in my area (eastern North Carolina) are out of stock of those staple items because they are being bought and donated because of the hurricane that pretty much destroyed eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina.

predictably irrational

thanks to the smart members on this site I learned two new things today:
1. our TP comes from Canada (so US longshoreman strikers aren't affecting toilet paper supply)
2. our TP comes by truck/rail, not by ship (so US longshoreman strikers aren't affecting toilet paper supply)

but to be honest, i knew neither of these facts beforehand, as I'm sure very few of our fellow citizens do. What they do know is that when there's panic buying, they'll be right out there trying to get goods before they get sold out. Just like inflation (which some articles say supply chain issues may "reignite inflation") causes people to spend today in advance of higher prices tomorrow.

As is not having a bidet. $30 and 20min to install one, and you can cut down toilet paper use by 90%.

This thread has run its course and is locked (rant, not actionable). See: Non-actionable or Trolling Topics
If readers can't do anything with the content of a topic other than argue about it, it does not belong here. Examples include:
  • US or world economic, political, tax, health care and climate policies
  • conspiracy theories of any type
  • discussions of the crimes, shortcomings or stupidity of other people, whether they be political figures, celebrities, CEOs, Fed chairmen, subprime mortgage borrowers, lottery winners, federal "bailout" recipients, poor people, rich people, etc. Of course, you are welcome to talk about the stupid financial things you have done.
This thread is now in the Personal Consumer Issues forum (supply chain).

Here we go again (run on toilet paper)

Post by YeahBuddy »

[Merged into existing Locked Thread on the same topic by Moderator Misenplace]

I just saw a post that my local Costco is completely sold out of toilet paper. Apparently people are stocking up in large quantities, thinking the Long Shoremen strike will cause all supplies to dry up. At first I laughed and said that's ridiculous. However, I'm seeing news that many products will become harder to find. See story below.

Besides what's mentioned in the story below, what items do we think will become hard to find? What's the game plan here?

To avoid stoking panic fears, I won't post my 'game plan' on the internet.

"Besides ...."

The story was very thorough. And toilet paper was not mentioned.
