Agree — that was epic!AlohaBill wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2024 10:37 am I long time ago I was watching Henry V with Branagh on the sofa. I was half asleep and couldn’t understand the dialogue well. All of a sudden, something clicked and I could understand everything. I didn’t know Shakespeare that well and realized it was about the Battle of Agincourt. Branagh’s speech pre battle was incredible. That was a fine movie. Cheers!

Here's a complete list of locations used in "Vertigo". It includes the 17 Mile Drive. I don't remember that!AlohaBill wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2024 10:37 am As I wrote previously, we watched Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo. I thought this movie was excellent, but my wife was disappointed by the ending. Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak were excellent. San Francisco was on display. My how times have changed. I thought it was hilarious there was no traffic back in the late 50s.

I recommended the movie to someone who likes California missions (San Juan Bautista in this case), but reading the following article, it says there was no bell tower on the mission at the time the movie was filmed. So they had to add it with special effects. I really can't wrap my head around that. I'd have to re-watch to fully believe that.

Roamingzebra,
When we returned to the States (California) from overseas (Saudi Arabia) , my kids were in elementary school schools and they all studied the missions. So since their friends were going to the missions , we had to go. It was fun to do and not that expensive. We went to Mission San Juan Bautista on one trip. It was interesting and the place was rather small. Cheers.

Ministry of ungentlemanly Warfare. Not Guy’s best effort by a long shot. Feels like a bunch of disjointed short stories tacked together.

I picked up the John Adams series (HBO, with Paul Giamatti) recently and have been watching it one part (about 90 min ea) per evening. Well done, pretty powerful.

In the John Adams series, Stephen Dillane as Thomas Jefferson and Tom Wilkinson as Benjamin Franklin are really good. The biography the series is based on, by David McCullough, is a great read.

Blink Twice on Amazon Prime and it was horrible. I could only get halfway through it....main character is an IT titan who takes average people to his private island....reminds me too much of the recent stories coming out about that music mogul.

"A Room With a View" - 1985. On DVD from the library.
James Ivory directs Helena Bonham Carter, Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Julian Sands, Denholm Elliott, and more in E. M. Forster's comic love story set in Edwardian Florence and England.
An acclaimed movie of a 1908 novel that I'd never seen before. Famous for the lush cinematography and costumes, acted well by a sterling cast. Young English woman of means Lucy Honeychurch (Bonham Carter) tours Florence with her older cousin, meets and is kissed by straw-haired young free-thinker George Emerson (Sands), but in confusion returns to England and agrees to marry foppish twit Cecil (played by Daniel Day-Lewis), but then George shows up again, and events take a turn.
Agreeable meditation on love and happiness, with plenty to delight the eye as well. I love the surname "Honeychurch".
And what a cast!

"Blood and Wine" - 1996. Streamed on Criterion Channel.
Bob Rafelson directs Jack Nicholson, Michael Caine, Stephen Dorff, Jennifer Lopez, and Judy Davis in a sun-bleached coastal Florida crime melodrama.
Rafelson is an interesting American auteur, co-creator of the faux pop group "The Monkees". He started out strong, as producer of movies like "The Last Picture Show" and "Easy Rider". His first movie as a director, "Five Easy Pieces", 1970, is critically lauded to this day. But then the dreary "The King of Marvin Gardens" took some of the shine off. He followed that with a body-building movie, "Stay Hungry", which somehow combines Arnold Schwartzenegger with Sally Field and Jeff Bridges. And a pointless remake of "The Postman Always Rings Twice" with Jessica Lange and Nicholson, makes sense only in the context of the revival of erotic thrillers in the early 80's. But then he makes two good movies, "Black Widow" (1987) and "The Mountains of the Moon" (1990). Followed by a really terrible movie (also with Nicholson), "Man Trouble" in 1992.
"Blood and Wine" is a relentless noirish piece, with bankrupt wine merchant Nicholson in cahoots with elderly and nasty thief Caine to steal a diamond necklace and abandon his wife (Davis) to run off with his girlfriend (Lopez). But things come up. This is sort of a cross between a Charles Willeford novel and one by Dave Barry.
I got kind of tired of it halfway through, but watched it to the end anyway to see what happened. Not sure it was worth it.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
I rarely come across mentions of this older Black Widow movie (not the newer one a few years ago).
It stars Debra Winger and Thereas Russell, with a signature small part by James Hong.
If you don't know/remember who James Hong is, you've probably seen him... a lot.
He has a very interesting background, in addition to being in about a gazillion movies and TV shows, plus voice acting.
His career started in 1956, and he most recently won an award (Screen Actors Guild) for his role in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Yes, 1956 through 2022 and perhaps counting...

A fishing "expert", who wrote a best selling book on the
sport, has never been fishing in his life. His successful
book was strictly from theory and input from expert
fisherman. George Willoughby (Rock Hudson), much to
his consternation, is hoodwinked into entering a fishing
tournament and a screwball comedy results. Other key
stars are Paula Prentiss, Maria Perschy, and John McGiver.
I enjoyed this movie.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
We recently watched the 1959 classic Our Man in Havana via library DVD. It's a British Spy Comedy, very dry, farcical humor but great fun; it's based on the Graham Greene novel of the same name but no idea how similar it is to the book.
And from a completely different part of the movie spectrum, we watched the 2024 movie The Fall Guy with Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. Looks like several people have already mentioned this one here so will just add that I didn't realize this, but apparently there was a 1980's TV series about a stunt man (played by Steve Austin) and this movie brings back that character. I thought it was a hoot but skip this one if you don't enjoy action movie stunts.

Debra Winger is great in almost everything, IMO. I think the screenplay by Ronald Bass is somewhat lacking; it exhibits the same problem a lot of Bass's screenplays do, irregular pacing.ResearchMed wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 11:54 am

There's an even earlier "Black Widow" from 1954, but I wouldn't bother. Too mannered, even with Ginger Rogers and George Raft as a detective. And a British version from 1951, which I haven't seen. And 2003. And 2005. And 2007 (a semi-remake of the 1987 movie) and 2010. A popular title.

I love Winger and this was her most fun role by far. Big hair and an attitude. Super aggressive federal agent, who can't let go of her quarry --a female serial killer that only she believes is a serial killer. She knows she's right and will even quit her job to prove it. (Actually not sure if she quit or took leave). This is one of those movies we watch again every so often. We especially like the Debra Winger character.
And when she plans to go to the range afterward, she brings her gun to work and races through Security before she is stopped. When caught, and escorted to her desk by security officers, she puts on a smart-alecky "You got me" routine, flirtatiously lifting up her skirt a bit, and her colleagues cheer her on.
There was enough good in the movie to endure the slow-as-molasses parts, but some really bad stuff as well. Theresa Russell's comments at the Kīlauea volcano as delivered by her, were about the most cringe-worthy in show business history. And her real-estate-developer boyfriiend was the least charismatic "leading man" ever on earth. All the chemistry was between Winger and Russell, and the Powers That Be didn't want to go there.
But again, Hong was amazing. His scenes with the Theresa Russell character are super memorable.

"The Pledge" (2001) on Peacock. Directed by Sean Penn. Jack Nicholson stars as a Reno detective who steps away from his retirement party to investigate the murder of a young girl. Why not? he's still on the clock for six more hours. He promises the mother of the victim that he will find the killer. He continues this quest on his own while retired from the force -- the police department thinks it found the killer, who was shot to death in custody after being interrogated and taking a cop hostage. Jack disagrees, thinks the real killer is still out there and has attacked two other young girls, and will kill again. He tries to find and catch him.
Nicholson is great playing a man who is obsessed, who is holding on to his professional identity and trying to prove he can still do it, he's not washed up. His acting is understated; he's not doing a Jack Nicholson impersonation. The whole movie is understated; it doesn't beat viewers over the head to tell us what to think. The transitions between scenes are seamless and sometimes dreamlike. The trauma caused by criminal violence is palpable, as is the fear at the potential of more violence.
The cast includes Robin Wright, Helen Mirren, Vanessa Redgrave, Tom Noonan, Michael O'Keefe, Mickey Rourke, Lois Smith, Sam Shepard, Benicio Del Toro, and Harry Dean Stanton. Really. Penn and Nicholson must've been quite the attraction.
Relating this movie to common Bogleheads' threads, maybe Jack's character should have stayed at work One More Year -- he seems to be failing at retirement.
I really liked this movie. Recommended.

Knew nothing about this movie other than its title.
Kill
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kill_(film)
Extremely violent. Cannot remember the last time I saw a movie so violent.
Peter Debruge of Variety wrote "As brutal a film as the country has ever produced, Kill is a shockingly graphic action showcase from an industry that typically plays violence in a more cartoony register."
Non-stop from start to end. I was tense the whole time watching it.
Surprisingly, if you read the reviews in the wikipedia entry above you see that it gets generally favorable reviews.
Grade: A+ / A
I was unable to predict what was going to happen next throughout the movie.
I'll leave one item about the movie way below if you scroll. So don't if you don't want to know anything about the movie.
In the end the good guys win.

"Lone Star" - 1996. On DVD from the library.
John Sayles directs Kris Kristofferson, Chris Cooper, Elizabeth Pena, Miriam Colon, Ron Canada, Frances McDormand, Matthew McConaughey in a richly textured murder mystery set in a small Texas border town.
One of Sayles' best movies, IMO. Chris Cooper is sheriff of a small town, and finds the bones and badge of a much-despised sheriff of the past, played in flashbacks by Kristofferson as a truly evil SOB. Murdered. Whodunnit? Sayles weaves together many threads in this movie masterfully. The setting -- a small town near a large army base, on the Texas border -- lends itself to a lot of misdirection and red herrings.
Tremendous movie, highly recommended.

Last night- Leave Her to Heaven (1945) dir. John M. Stahl. The costumes!! Technicolor! A writer gets wrapped up in whirlwind romance with an obsessive, sociopathic socialite. I read that Rose McGowan modeled her character in Jawbreaker after Gene Tierney in this film.
I've had Lone Star on my watchlist for a while, may watch it soon if it's still on streaming for me.

Civil War on Max. Highly recommend
Megalopolis by FF Coppola
Just saw "Megalopolis" at our local big screen. Despite all the bad reviews, I had to see what might be F.F. Coppola's last film.
Unfortunately, it was less than I had hoped for. Almost 2.5 hours went by quickly, but the characters are all cardboard cut-outs,
much like a superhero film. Disappointing. Jon Voight, Larry Fishburne, Dustin Hoffman, Shia LaBeouf, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman
and Adam Driver all wasted by a throw-away script and a complete lack of human emotion. Written, produced and directed by
Coppola so there is no one else to blame. There supposedly is some universal meaning here with many Shakespearean quotes and written
deep thoughts on the screen, but I could not figure out the point of it all. Roman character names in modern day New York with a view
to the future. An expensive mess. Too bad.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Last night we watched about 5 minutes of Promising Young Woman with Carey Mulligan (?). As she was about to be assaulted my better half had me stop the movie. She wanted no part of it. She had the same reaction to Kill Bill. So we didn’t watch a movie last night. I try to avoid violent movies, but she liked Steven Segal movies and Pulp Fiction. Oh well, my bad. I’ll do better next time.
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Starting off spooky season with Hell House LLC, which has become a regular rotation film for me. A group of young people reopen a vacant hotel as a haunted house attraction, when a "malfunction" causes chaos on opening night. This is a micro-budget found footage horror, but it looks and feels well beyond its resources. There are several cleverly put-together scares and overall I find this a fun if somewhat lighter watch.

I'm always amazed by how good other countries' movies can be.
The subtitles don't bother me as I get quite annoyed if I cannot get subtitles with whatever I'm watching since I love to read and they put things on there that you'd never ever hear from just listening.

After passing on Promising Young Woman, we decided to watch Betelgeuse (sp?) with Michael Keaton. This was a pretty good comedy. I look forward to watching the sequel.

Land of Mine (Under Sandet) (2015) - stars Roland Møller, Joel Basman, and Louis Hofmann of All the Light We Cannot See.
"In post-World War II Denmark, a group of young German POWs are forced to clear a beach of thousands of land mines under the watch of a Danish Sergeant who slowly learns to appreciate their plight."
A truly unique perspective on the war.
Oscar-nominated; highly recommended.

"Wild Rose" on Tubi.
A young woman from Glasgow dreams of moving to Nashville to become a country singer. Good, fairly predictable story and sort of a surprise ending. I liked the movie and the music.

Another rewatch favorite of mine for the spooky season, Bride of Chucky (1998). I think this movie is fun to watch regardless, but the self-references to the franchise to that point and to other horror films are great.

I love that movie! I remember seeing it in the movie theaters years ago when it first came out.littlerfish wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2024 11:43 am "A Room With a View" - 1985.

"The Cabin in the Woods" - 2012. On DVD from the library.
Joss Whedon directs Kristin Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchinson, Fran Kranz, Sigourney Weaver, and more in a rollicking spoof of kids-at-a-cabin horror movies.
A smart sharp take-off on teen slasher movies. College kids take off to spend a weekend at a remote cabin, with hanky-panky on their minds, but it turns out there's something else going on. With Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins as manager heroes just trying to get things to come out OK.
Pretty good movie. All the standard things, but with an added snarky meta-commentary on the genre. I'll watch it again.

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice - not as good as the original but still watchable. I felt like it picked up and was a better movie in the second half.
The Wild Robot - excellent animated film with a lot of heart. Saw it in 3D and it was an excellent experience (aside from the mother who decided to bring her two kids and let them run wild throughout the movie)....aside from her, I would recommend the movie to anyone with or without kids, its just a good, solid movie.

"Apollo 13" (1995) - directed by Ron Howard, starring Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, Kevin Bacon, Ed Harris, Gary Sinise.
Three astronauts blast off for the moon only to be stranded in space in an explosion- damaged vehicle with life-support systems running out. Houston Contol works feverishly to bring them back to earth and save their lives.
Great film, Oscar-nominated.
A bit long, but a tense thriller that can be enjoyed on both the human and the technical level.
