Timing of VG MF Dividends to buy VG MFs

Post by RetireGood »

Hi

I see some balance in my VG account in 'Available Balance'. Probably Q2 DIVs for the positions I have. They don't show up in transaction history yet.
I think 09/30 is payable date for all the MFs' I have (VTSAX, VLCAX, VFIAX, VTMSX, VEXAX, VUSUXX)

Can I use above balance to buy VTSAX today w/o any repercussions like margin interest etc.

Thanks

In my experience at Vanguard, if the "Funds available to trade" is a positive number, then that's the amount you can safely invest today.

Do you have a margin account or a cash account?

To avoid any repercussions about margin interest, tell your brokerage (Vanguard) you want a cash account.

At Vanguard with mutual funds the auto reinvest date is a trading day before the payable date.

If the account states "available to trade", then it is available to trade.

If you had the cash automatically sent elsewhere (reinvest, to external checking), then it would not have shown up as "available to trade."

YOu have about 4 minutes to use the money today.

I have margin enabled.
It showed below earlier today. I am not sure about the order of amounts in row 4 and 5, could have been otherwise.
(Later I did one transfer to buy more VTSAX, so column 2/3 below has that amount now)
I have turned of re-invest and also had no push to outside account.
Anyways I put a buy order for VTSAX with $y the Q3 DIVs'.

Code: Select all

Vanguard Federal Money Market Fund (Settlement fund)	$0.79
Cash credits and debits	$0
Pending activity amount	$0
Margin cash available	$X
Funds available to trade	$X + y=(Q3 Divs)
Total buying power	$2x
