lol, you can do both.AlohaBill wrote: ↑Tue Sep 03, 2024 11:46 am My grandfather was a noted ballroom dancer attracting all the ladies. After getting thrown out of Downtown in Melrose for suggestive dancing at around 13 (I must have doing some Elvis the Pelvis moves), I hated dancing ever since. My whole family were dancers! I grew to like climbing mountains.
That was a buy!

Listening to Denver's Leaving on a Jet Plane. In the late 60s I was hooked on the Peter Paul & Mary version. There's a story behind that I won't reveal here! Not sure I then even knew it was a John Denver song or had heard it.heartwood wrote: ↑Sat Sep 07, 2024 9:33 am Annie's Song by John Denver https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNOTF-znQyw
I stumbled on it as part of a folk music list on Spotify. I forgot how much good music he wrote. I'm now listening to the Spotify play list The Ultimate John Denver.
Rocky Mountain High, Colorado!
I have many Association records which were listened by me many times.roamingzebra wrote: ↑Fri Sep 06, 2024 3:56 pmAren't you guys forgetting The Association?yankees60 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 05, 2024 9:33 amI could have listened to each of them with you!Nicolas wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 7:46 pm Sherry — The Four Seasons (1962)

That’s a great song. I like samba. Here’s another performance, and same girl with the huge earrings: https://youtu.be/BrZBiqK0p9E?si=kDolXOZLvoNtmtgSJAZZISCOOL wrote: ↑Fri Sep 06, 2024 1:51 pm Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - Mas Que Nada (1966)

It’s actually just a different lip-sync to the same recording.
I’m not too keen on the Black-Eyed Peas version. Which of his albums have the more hard-core stuff? I’d like to listen. I’ve been to Brazil many times.roamingzebra wrote: ↑Sat Sep 07, 2024 6:34 pmI could listen to that all day. (And I have at times).Nicolas wrote: ↑Sat Sep 07, 2024 5:25 pmThat’s a great song. I've listened to Mendes' more hard-core Brazilian stuff based on the Black Orpheus theme, but I prefer this more commercialized version of music. I don't, however, care for the English language (Beatles) songs that he and Brazil 66 did.
Not sure if you ever saw/heard the version of Mas Que Nada with the Black-Eyed Peas. I like it when an artist can occasionally modernize themselves.
Sergio Mendes / Black Eyed Peas - Mas Que Nada Live
It's rap -- not my thing, but hey, respect!

I didn't care for that version either; not a fan of the genre but I appreciate the creative attempt.roamingzebra wrote: ↑Sat Sep 07, 2024 6:34 pmI could listen to that all day. I no longer remember the names of the real hardcore stuff, but it was done before he (Sergio Mendes) became famous in the US.
Two of their best! Awesome creativity and variety.
Nice! I usually don't like "live" recordings that much but the quality of sound on this is pretty good. It's good to hear some other material I wasn't familiar with.roamingzebra wrote: ↑Sat Sep 07, 2024 8:08 pmI no longer remember the names of the real hardcore stuff, but it was done before he (Sergio Mendes) became famous in the US.
But for an example of more "serious" music as compared to the more commercial, this is a good one. I used to have the CD.
Sergio Mendes & Brasil '65 - In Person At El Matador
I'd recommend starting with "The Black Orpheus Medly". It goes through a range of tempos...starting slow and soft then really getting into those Carnival Brazilian rhythms.
Some of the other songs include some acoustic guitar played by one of the women, Note that this is Brasil '65 and not sure if the same women were also in Brasil '66 (never researched tat far).
Thanks — I like it.roamingzebra wrote: ↑Sat Sep 07, 2024 8:08 pmI no longer remember the names of the real hardcore stuff, but it was done before he (Sergio Mendes) became famous in the US.

Oh no. I am quite a fan. Loved his very early music in the 60s and 70s. I also loved more recent collaborations, in particular “Brasileiro” with Carlinhos Brown:JAZZISCOOL wrote: ↑Fri Sep 06, 2024 1:51 pm Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - Mas Que Nada (1966)

Nice album. I've been listening on Apple Music. The first couple of tracks have a lot of drums/rhythmic. I like it. I was lucky to see him perform a couple of years ago north of Boston. He was probably 81 and seemed to just love performing live.
Another favorite old one, so full of hope and optimism: “Horizonte Aberto”:
