keyfort wrote: Sat Jul 27, 2024 5:35 pm I am making a new thread because things seem to have changed with washing machines. The one I had a while back isn't sold anymore and there are hundreds of others.

Unfortunately I made the mistake not long ago of buying an LG top load washer with an impeller, because it was recommended by Consumer Reports. This is the worst appliance I've ever owned. It doesn't clean clothes no matter what settings I use.
We have a 5-year old LG top load washer with impeller (i.e., wash plate) at the bottom and it cleans quite well. The water added is adequate to wet and mix together all of the clothes. If some clothes never get wet, I wonder if your washer has a defective water level sensor. I also wonder if you're using HE detergent, which is what LG requires; for most larger loads, we use 1.5-2 oz of HE detergent and a warm water temperature setting. Much of the cleaning action happens from clothes rubbing against each other with minimal but adequate water in the tub; the initial part of each Normal wash cycle (with Turbo Wash selected) does use very little water, but then more water is added at least once or twice during the wash cycle.
I've also had a LG top-loader with impeller for about five years, and it works fine. I've read that with high-efficiency (HE) impeller-type washers the detergent makes a huge difference. I use Tide, Stain Release, HE detergent. (You have to use HE detergent, and some work much better than others.) Actually mine worked terrible at first because the delivery people got the water lines reversed. They had the hot water going to the cold connection on the washer and vice versa.

We got a Miele with TwinDos and have had it for a few years.

What I like:
It's fast and has a lot of various modes.
Miele has really nice (but a bit pricey) consumables.
It auto doses and works great with wool.
The connected features can be nice for knowing when the cycle is complete.

What I don't like:
Miele customer service in (in the US) is not good.
Ordering replacement parts from Miele is a hassle, even through vendors, we know this because our stacking kit was missing parts (fault of vendor, AFAIK).
The TwinDos clogged on us even with proper maintenance and took a long time (hours IIRC) to declog with hot water.
The price, Miele does tend to have a premium price on all products.
Limited capacity size, smaller than the unit we replaced.

If we were to buy appliances all over again, we would consider the GE Ultrafast Combo and see how it compares to the Miele set (I haven't been shopping, so I don't know how they compare).
We really like our Miele set, but some of the new heat pump offerings seem very competitive especially considering a whole combo unit may qualify for heat pump incentives.

I would make a recommendation, except
1) Our washer isn't made anymore
2) I'm convinced that smart appliances are listening to our conversations and if we make a statement about how long they've been working without a problem, within a week or so they will break. :D

Cheers.

I had a front loader, but will never buy another one again. I hate having to dry out the seal and leaving the door open.

I’ve read elsewhere that one should stick to American brands because they’re easier/cheaper to get serviced than non-American brands. Has anyone experienced this?

Following this thread since I’m also looking to buy a new one soon.

Chalk me up as another Speed Queen fan. Despite what the earlier poster said, my water bill hasn't gone up (use ecomode) and my clothes do not wear out. I've had it about 6 years, not one single problem.
