Nobody knows nothing episode [Invested in Microsoft]

Back in the 2010s I went all in with my better half's 401K on MSFT. 24$ a pop because from all I knew they were the gorilla of software then and the future. No diversification what so ever, cardinal sin. The same week a caller on CNBC on the one show that takes call ins asked for the prognostication on MSFT and its future for stock appreciation. The hair impaired MC said "you may make a buck or two" but there was more favorable investment possibilities available. I immediately felt stupid for going whole hog on my putting the entirety of the spouses 410k into it. I stayed put none the less. Nobody knows nothing.

Microsoft is one of the greatest businesses ever invented but nobody really knows how long they will continue to be. I think investors have been thrown for a loop with the great software companies, they rewrote the rules for how to value a business, they stiff-armed the law of large numbers, they made us rethink what is a dominant business and how do governments and regulating bodies grapple with that.

Microsoft is one of the 25 companies that are responsible for nearly 1/3 of all U.S. stock returns above one month T-bills since 1926.

How much did you invest at the low prices? Usually it’s only a few thousand, but it if was a 401k all in I hope it was $50k plus and now there’s a million plus in gains tax sheltered.

I find Jim Cramer entertaining, but find that he's wrong a good % of the time, so I mostly treat him as a contrary indicator.

I missed on Facebook, Apple, Netflix, and Google, (FANG) but did buy in at very low prices on Microsoft in 2005. Then in March, 2009 I purchased quite a bit more at $18 and change. All dividends reinvested. It has been one of my better individual stocks. The company seemed to move forward when Ballmer left.

No more individual stocks for me, I have done extremely well, but luck was probably the biggest issue.

I purchase Apple in the late 2000’s. I made money on it. But watching ups and downs made me very nervous so I sold in mid 2010’s.
It was a good decision for me. I lost out on $ for not holding steady, but am a happier investor with a boglehead portfolio.

I lucked out with Apple in my Roth. I occasionally think about selling it and putting it into VTI but haven’t yet.
