Favorite Audio (Audible) Books?

Post by Cranberry44 »

Hi All,

I have an Amazon Audible membership that I'm hoping to take a break from for the next few months. I have three remaining credits that I have to use with in the next four days before my membership automatically renews, and I'm not sure what to take the leap on.

What are your favorite/recomended audible books (finance or otherwise!)? My two favorites after nearly a decade of listening are:

It has been a very, very, long time since I've last listened to an audio book. Have they improved? In terms of using multiple voices for the book?

In the past when I tried one it would put me to sleep listening to one person read a book which isn't good while driving.

They've never put me to sleep, but some narrators certainly have a cult following now. The narrator/voice actor Ray Porter is one such example, and a personal favorite of mine (in addition to Project Hail Mary, linked above, he also narrated We Are Legion (We are Bob) which I found to be an absolute RIOT and light-hearted science fiction work if you're into that sorta thing. Highly recommended).

If you'd like a more theatrical experience with sound effects and music, there are Fiction Podcasts that are great! Dark Woods was amazing, and so was Station 151.

I'm on public transit for about 2 hours M-F so I get a lot of listening in!

Highly recommend “Influence is your superpower: The science of winning hearts, sparking change and making good things happen” by Zoe Chance

Allegedly Zoe Chance teaches the Most popular class in the Yale graduate school of management and this book covers her material, she is the narrator of the Audible edition.

And if you liked Project Hail Mary, be sure and try “The Martian” as an audible book, I thought the audible version was even better than the movie!

Any of the John Scalzi sci fi books that are read by Will Wheaton, are also worth a listen.

Used a credit on the Zoe Change book -- sounds like something I can use right about now with some work situations.

I heard great things about "The Martian!"

Avid follower of this thread. Thank you for starting it! I'm always searching for something to listen to on my own hour (each way) commute. Unfortunately, I don't remember too many from the past.

There was a good history The Platagenents; I really enjoyed that.

I've been on a recent history kick:

Joseph Kanon has some good cold war books;

Alan Furst inter-war espionage books;

Phillip Kerr's Bernie Gunther's series.

I'd love any recommendations for interesting alt-history audiobooks.
We plan. G-d laughs.

"My Name is Barbra" - Barbra Streisand's new memoir.

The audio book is 48 hours, read by Barbra herself, in her inimitable voice!

I love listening to it as I walk; it's like going for a walk with Barbra. I'm only on chapter 5, so Barbra and I have many more hours to go together.

I really like exciting, historical nonfiction books. These are two of my favorites from recent years. The Irish actor (and Belfast native) Matthew Blaney was a perfect narrator for Say Nothing and both books were hard to put down, digitally speaking.

If you get a card at your local library you may have access to an insane amount of audio books for free via an app. You just might have to wait a bit to 'check out' the book you want, and you only have two weeks to listen to the book. I've listened to hundreds of books through the libby app via my local library membership.

To actually answer the question:
Lonesome Dove was fantastic as a huge fan of the mini-series.
If you want long books, some of the Tom Clancy books get into the 40+ hour range and are entertaining.
With three credits, a three book series that I really liked was the Natchez Burning trilogy by Greg Iles

For long listening projects, a second for the Robert Caro Lyndon Johnson series and the Lonesome Dove series (Dead Man's Walk, Comanche Moon, Lonesome Dove, and Streets of Laredo).

Gilda Radner's "It's Always Something" which she reads herself was excellent. Eddie Fisher reading his own bio was also excellent.

James Joyce comes off much better on audio than off the page IMO.

Anything by Richard Feynman.

Ken Follett - Pillars of the Earth

I think there are 5 books now in the series, but the original is still the best.

YES! Let us know what you think. It starts out rough, and gritty. But hang in there. It will be worth it in the end in my opinion.
