Wife had a free Redbox and picked up "Barbie" yesterday. I lasted about 20 minutes before I fell asleep. Wife said it was mildly entertaining, but didn't understand what the fuss was about. Kids had pretty much the same reaction.

Thought for certain I'd seen it before but remembered none of it while I was watching it.
Was quite surprised by how several things turned out in it, especially its ending.
Yes, "No Country for Old Men" was a terrific movie.
By mid-movie, I dreaded seeing Anton Chirgurh [played by Javier Bardem].
It won 4 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor [for Bardem].

One of my favorite movies based on a book by one of my favorite authors - Cormac McCarthy. Passed away not long ago.
One of my favorite movies.

I bought this on one of the Prime Video sales more than a year ago for $5. If I especially like a movie, I'll wait until Prime Video runs a sale, typically at a $5 or $10 price point to buy it. Additionally, I have racked up $1 digital credits for slow delivery of Amazon orders that I am not in a hurry to receive.

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (2021) Benedict Cumberbatch, Claire Foy, Toby Jones

The true story of English artist Louis Wain rising to prominence at the end of the 19th century for his surreal cat drawings that seemed to reflect his declining sanity. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10687506/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

A touching film. I knew nothing of Louis Wain before seeing this film. He reminds me a bit of Vincent Van Gogh, especially at the end of his life. Recommended. We streamed it on Amazon Prime (we have a free trial membership).

Movie mostly follows the book. But the book’s ending is slightly different. If you liked the movie, read the book.

The Equalizer 3, $5.99 rental on Amazon Prime, rated R, Denzel Washington, 2023, action / crime / drama. Robert McCall finds himself at home in Southern Italy but he discovers his friends are under the control of local crime bosses. I'd say it was as good as the first 2. I liked it.

Saw Barbie on the big screen at a local museum last night. I’m afraid the only thing I enjoyed was the popcorn.

On the other hand, saw 1917 at the same location the previous week - had me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

Granted I was only awake for the first 20 minutes, but my wife and kids weren't all that entertained either. From what I saw, at least it was somewhat creative, which is probably why people were flipping over it. Writing for the large majority of movies the last ~5yrs is so formulaic, more concerned with virtue signaling than telling a good story, and just plain bad.

Patch Adams, starring Robin Williams. I had never seen it, and we wanted to watch something a bit madcap, so we rented it from Amazon Prime.

I found it a bit maudlin and very predictable. As always, Williams has scenes where his manic delivery takes over the screen; he is a reliable ingredient. But I found the acting of the "bad guy" dean to be wooden; the romance seemed forced (and a bit stalker-ish, given modern, post #MeToo sensibilities), and the final scene with the medical board just seemed impossible.

I'm not sorry I saw it, but I'd find it hard to recommend it.

As someone at the co-op where I shopped said back when it came out, this movie has "absolutely no redeeming value whatsoever." I went and saw it and couldn't agree more. Nonsensical gratuitous violence.

But to each their own.

Speaking of, apparently a film version of McCarthy's masterpiece Blood Meridian is going to be made after years of not getting launched. The book shook me to the core, I can't imagine what will end up on film.

Love Crazy, in Amazon Prime.

This is a 1941 screwball comedy starring William Powell and Myrna Loy. An ex-girlfriend and a meddling mother in law are trying to break up a marriage, divorce proceedings are initiated and the husband feigns insanity to delay the divorce hearing.

Napoleon. Ridley Scott's new epic starring Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby. The movie is receiving mixed reviews, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and would rate it among the best of the year. Recommended.

Wife and I took 5 of our grandkids (aged 5 to 10) to see Trolls Band Together for a pre-Thanksgiving treat at a theater. All of of us really enjoyed it. I think DW and I enjoyed the music more than the kids did, but the story held their interest. I especially enjoy watching kids movies with them as my 10 year old grandson laughs at things I don't think are funny, and I laugh at things he doesn't get. i Imagine the writers get a kick out of inserting some mild "adult" humor to make the adults chuckle while it goes over the kids' heads!

Exam. It was, umm, a bit weird. I don’t know how else to describe it. Definitely unique. I’d give it 6 out of 10 stars.

As an aside, it’s sad and pathetic that some people would be so enamored with a company that they would go to such lengths.

Fingernails on AppleTV+. Extremely well acted movie about a society where a test determines if you're actually in love with your partner. Movie is slow but the concept is interesting. I wasnt fond of the ending but wasnt disappointed that I saw it. Feels a lot like an A24 film so if those are your cup of tea, I'd recommend it. Otherwise, you'll know in 30mins if you want to continue on.

Dream Scenario. Nicolas Cage delivers a fine performance. However, the treatment of the material is very heavy-handed.

I saw it in a theater.

Good Night Oppy, free on Amazon Prime, rated PG, 2022, documentary. The film follows Opportunity, the Mars Exploration Rover affectionately dubbed Oppy by her creators and scientists at NASA.

I've never seen a scientific documentary presented like this. Told by the NASA employees themselves, it's heartwarming, emotional, and is fun to watch. This film won several awards for a reason. Anyone who has an interest in science or engineering should watch this movie.

Filmed in Ultra High-Def (UHD) with Dolby Atmos audio, the scenery and music are best enjoyed in a high-def home theater - what I have.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - 2001. SyFy Network. All the Harry Potter movies are airing this weekend and we had never watched any of them.

We have a Spring, 2024 trip to Universal Orlando and figured we need to be up to speed on the HP phenomenon. This past fall we did one day in Universal Hollywood and were gobsmacked at how many folks were decked out in HP costumes, hats, etc. The thing is a money machine!

Just saw it, enjoyed it, and thanks for posting. I’d planned to watch it ever since reading an NPR article (below) and also getting “hooked”:
When first spotted, Oppy has been on a roll but has abruptly come to a stop. "Hazard detected," she alerts her handlers on earth. They get the message some six minutes later, look at the image she's sent, and send back a few words that get her rolling again: "You are safe to proceed. That's just your shadow."

Now, forgive me, but this is not even four minutes in, and already I'm hooked.
https://www.npr.org/2022/11/03/11340953 ... night-oppy

Now I think there should be a documentary on the little helicopter, “Ingenuity,” brought to Mars by the robot “Perseverance." Once thought to be lost, the four-pound Ingenuity was found safe and sound by Perseverance, wonderfully described in the “blog post” link in the article below:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2 ... disappear/

I'm not surprised that there's such a deep bond between the little robots and their creators, but that so much of the public also caught the love bug, even those with no scientific skill such as myself. Must be the imagination. :-)

National Champions on Netflix.
Tells the story of the NCAA's hold on athletes from a variety of perspectives.
Each character seems to get a chance at a monologue, from which you learn these perspectives.
Better than either DW or myself thought it would be.

Mine reclamation: Healing the landscape at my local museum.

Popcorn for dinner while watching a 1-hour documentary produced by our local PBS station. I knew that historically there was a lot of coal mining in my state but had no idea of its extent & impact on the land. Interesting question and answer session with the producer and cinematographer after the film. Decent production values and an informative film.

The documentary will be broadcast tomorrow. Currently you can view a 30-second trailer on the local PBS website. After broadcast, it will be available for streaming (free of charge): https://www.wtvp.org/local-programs/mine-reclamation/.

And I’m looking forward to watching Violent Night again this weekend. Loved it last year.

Leo, rated PG, on Netflix, 2023, animation / comedy /family. You don't need to watch it with the grandkids. There's enough in there for the adults. A few scenes were hysterical. It's a very nice change of pace. I liked it.

Very uplifting - you are never too old to achieve your dreams.
