Same with your earlier "Land of 1000 Dances".

I'll add one that I thought was from the same period but was actually much older.

Wilbert Harrison - Kansas City

(P.S. don't mind the inaccurate lyrics. I noticed them too late.)

"Help on the Way"

I've been recently listening to him a lot. I like to hear a musician who collaborates with others across genres as he often does. This track has a tabla player (Indian drums - it sounds like).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxQjMc7NsIU

I just read he was named after the Hungarian composer Bela Bartok. :beer

The tabla player here is Zakir Hussain -- one of the greats! Great stuff with Dave Holland, Chris Potter, and others if you're interested in his other jazz collabs.

Was listening to this track while inputting expenses in my spreadsheet and had to stop back here to point out Bela Flecks nod to John Coltrane with his chromatic modulations of the main theme from A Love Supreme during his improvisation at about 4:17! How cool!
Now I'll have to listen again! I think McCoy Tyner is on that recording. :beer

When I first scanned this page, the name "Coltrane" jumped out and I immediately thought of Harry Bosch's dog. :D

(Apologies in advance if you don't know what the heck I'm talking about LOL. But Harry Bosch loves jazz so this is marginally on topic. :) )

But now I don't listen to it anymore because there are so many advertisement-free streaming alternatives out there now. (Around 80% of my listening is on free YouTube, but ad-blockers eliminate 100% of the adds.)
I used to have WRSI on the radio in my kitchen 24 hours a day. That was when Rachel Maddow was their morning DJ for three years.

But when the Celtics were making there run to their Championship in 2008 I switched to sports talk radio, WWEI. It was also on 24 hours a day plus on four other radios in my house.

However, after the Celtics lost in the post season in 2022 I decided that I did not want to hear any of the complaining by the hosts and call in people. I was not going to listen for a day, which turned into a week, which has now turned into 17 months as the last time I've listened to WEEI.

The kitchen radio (plus a bathroom radio) are on WRSI, which is still an excellent station with the tremendous variety of songs that it plays. I also listen to it while in my car.
Glad to hear that. Yeah, WRSI is one of those rare outlying stations that can play great music and still be commercially viable. I really don't know why they can do it while others can't. Maybe it's a unique market, with all the colleges around? I actually used to listen to WRNX in the car also, before they changed formats, if I couldn't pick up WRSI or something came on I didn't care for — like a commercial! (The only other commercial station that I consistently enjoyed was WXRT out of Chicago in the early '80s.) First heard Amy Winehouse on WRSI. Man, did she really command attention with some of her songs!

Rachael Price has such a great voice.
I think that it was last year they headlined Saturday night at Green River Festival.

It was just too big production for me with all the lights and choreography. Too rehearsed and produced.

I contrast it to this year where Little Feat closed the festival. No choreography or lights or production. It was simply the power of their music and their musicianship that spoke loudly.
I haven't been back to the GRF since 2018. :( Interesting about LSD. Funny thing is, they're great musicians, too. But I sort of lost track of them. After spinning that EP of covers I went looking for some more recent stuff of theirs. I found their latest album and gave it a listen. I was halfway through the album before I got to some tunes that sounded like how I knew them before. I didn't care for it much, and that was a surprise. I like most of their earlier original tunes and pretty much everything I've heard them cover. I saw them live a few times, and am just in awe of Price's voice. With her singing, they were a four-piece band with only three instruments. Her strong, prominent voice really rounded out the whole sound.

We just stumbled across Franco Fagioli, a countertenor, singing an unusual rendition of
Handel's Ombra mai fu:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FD8eL-1a0As

This piece is an ode to a tree, so the setting is especially interesting.

DH then found some other performances by Fagioli; his range is truly phenomenal. Amazing.
In some cases, his staging and costumes reflect the times when female/skirt roles were always sung by castrati, as women were not allowed to perform. In modern times, countertenors sometimes play the female/skirt roles.

Here is Ombra mai fu, interpreted in a similar fashion by Cécilia Bartoli (I think it was originally composed for a countertenor, not a soprano):

I believe that this year is the 30 year anniversary of that song?

Last year I was at The Big E when he was playing there. It cost extra money to see him and I did not decide to do it. We were, though, going to stand outside of the place and listen but, somehow we ended being somewhere at The Big E while he was performing and missed it all.

It never ceases to amaze me how with all the music I listen to I can be completely oblivious to certain extremely talented musicians for decades.

This came out 27 years ago and I'd never heard of him until today. The song is so great that I had to listen to it three or four times in a row.

Anyone here familiar with him and his music?

On her rock album, yes her rock album, she did "Freebird", "Heart of Glass", "Magic Man", "Heartbreaker", "Every Breath You Take", "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", etc. all with the original artists. Gotta hand it to her.

I love it. That's the way The Beatles performed it and recorded it, as a mash-up of two songs: "Kansas City" and "Hey, Hey, Hey."

As one of the commentators said, "I can't understand how paul mccartney can be,watching the crowd, smyling, dancing, singing and play that bass perfectly."

Well, it was second nature to him, as they'd played it lots of times, though I'm not sure it was fully live. It may have been lip-synched or singing on top of the recording. Regardless, to me, they looked and sounded great.
"Well, she was just seventeen, You Know What I Mean, and the way she looked... was way beyond compare."

Thank you for sharing the Fagioli version of Ombra mai fu which is pretty stunning. Counter tenors are very fascinating to me and for a long time the gold standard for me was Philippe Jaroussky who has an amazingly clear tone. Here is his version of Ombra mai fu:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQm2C5U ... rt_radio=1

This Handel aria is very beautiful and I have heard many versions by counter tenors(David Daniels), sopranos (Simone Kermes) and mezzo-sopranos (Loraine Hunt Lieberson) and all are quite good. I think that the Ceclia Bartoli version is outstanding, but as I understand it she is technically a mezzo-soprano (just a little lower in range than a soprano). Thanks again for sharing, I will look further in Mr. Fagioli.

Yeah it's confusing at first. The killer, MacHeath or "Mack", is being compared to a shark in the first few lines, but it ends there. The above YouTube link has the lyrics on the screen and you get a better sense of the meaning. It's a dark song with a long history and despite the somewhat gruesome lyrics, they're sanitized compared to the original, historical lyrics. But the funny thing is that the song sounds so upbeat.

Here's another by Bobby Darin. It's about a knife-wielding criminal, so maybe better for after Thanksgiving. But it's a true classic.

Bobby Darin - Mack the Knife
Yes I know the song but I thought it was about a shark :confused. A great song, it was covered by Ella, and probably quite a few others too.
I never closely examined the lyrics before. It was written by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill for “The Threepenny Opera” as I just discovered. And you’re right, it’s not about a shark

They also wrote “Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)” covered by The Doors on their debut album. Here’s the original version of that song from 1930 if you’ve never heard it. I prefer The Doors version :D although it could grow on me. https://youtu.be/EGUjGPrfA6U?si=Rjd5C08NMVOjexmV

Kind of creepy, isn't it?

Though I prefer it to the Door's version since it sounds too much like, well, The Doors! And I'm so over them. :D

I still like The Doors, but I never went for Morrison’s Lizard King shtick.
Bowie covered it too. https://youtu.be/7QVeqBVOc7A?si=lpBDcgwqJIpfqUdS
His sounds more like the original.

Love Dan Hicks! His backup singers were the Lickettes as you’re probably aware.
Not aware until now. Listening to that song a few days ago was one of the few times I'd been exposed to his music.

You are so over the Doors??? Aside from me thinking that Morrison as a vocalist was one of the most overrated all-time ... him and the band made great music.

While I was at it, I looked at who else she collaborated with, and what other non-Parton songs she has sung....and had a good laugh:

She did "Stairway to Heaven" live. (For anyone tired of LedZep.)

On her rock album, yes her rock album, she did "Freebird", "Heart of Glass", "Magic Man", "Heartbreaker", "Every Breath You Take", "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", etc. all with the original artists. Gotta hand it to her.
Dolly rocked AT&T stadium at the Cowboys Thanksgiving half time show. She was amazing and out performed entertainers 50 years younger.

I guess that means you missed his appearance at the GRF? I feel fortunate to have caught his set at there (in 2001, the same year Leo Kottke played). A really creative guy, always surrounded by fine musicians. He was a little before my time, but I became familiar with his music on the U of Hartford's WWUH morning rush hour show, FM on Toast, many years ago. He put on a fantastic live set.

I found the link.

Dolly Parton Full Thanksgiving Halftime Show

The last of the set is "We Are the Champions" by Queen. (Previous were "Jolene" and "Nine to Five").

What I like about Dolly is what I liked about Jeff Beck: lack of ego (esp. noticeable with Dolly - she doesn't take herself too seriously), an overall good attitude, plays well with others, willing to try different genres.

I love Dolly because she is still grounded, despite her obvious riches and stellar career. She is a hoot!

I am listening to Jimmy Buffett's latest, Equal Strain On All Parts.

I deliberately used the word latest, not last, as I imagine there will be periodic releases of his music in the future.

Hopefully his beneficiaries won't be squabbling like Prince's and Michael Jackson's families.

DW and I attended a few of his concerts, really fun times. Lots of fans singing along, with Jimmy's encouragement.

The daughters grew up with a large dose of Jimmy Buffett, and have attended Buffett concerts with DW. The grandchildren tolerate Buffett.

Well today I was only able to walk for 50 minutes. We listened to Fleetwood Mac’s greatest hits side 2. In 1973 I bought a Fleetwood Mac album and didn’t like it. I don’t think the ladies were with the band then. I’ve known to be wrong before. :D

Christine McVie was with the band at that point, she joined in 1970. But Stevie Nicks (and Lindsey Buckingham) had not joined yet and the band's sound changed significantly when they did.
