Help picking healthcare plan please

Post by neko06 »

Hello all,
I was recently laid off in October, and it may be a few months before I can get a new full time job (many firms in town are not hiring right now). I need help picking a health insurance plan from the Colorado Affordable Care plans for open enrollment coverage starting in January. I am very clueless about plan specifics and could really use your help.

About me:
36 female, single, non smoker. No serious medical conditions. No family history of illness. Healthy. Two daily prescriptions. I have my yearly wellness physical, and a yearly neurologist appointment. I play sports so my main health needs are the occasional sprained ankle, fractured bone, etc.

Here are some plans available through Connect for Colorado. Any suggestions you have are appreciated!

I have used a site - healthsherpa.com - in the past. If you enter your information and assumptions, it will project which ACA plans offer the lowest overall cost. You can remain anonymous when entering the data.

Check the plans' provider networks to see if all your current providers (and any you might consider using if needed) are in both KP's and Anthem's provider list. Also, what type of coverage are the KP plans? Anthem's all appear to be HMO's based on the plan name, but KP's don't indicate what they are. Also check the formularies for both to see what the coverage/copay is for your current prescriptions. The answers to those might narrow the choices down to one of the 2 insurance companies.

Do you travel? You don't list out of network coverage, but I know our KP plans don't cover anything out of network except emergencies.

Did you look at the COBRA coverage info you received? It is unlikely to come out less than the plans you have listed, but it has been known to happen.

KP has a deal with Cigna to handle urgent and emergency care at their regular contracted rates when traveling to a location that doesn’t have Kaiser. I have a special insurance card for traveling. And a Kaiser patient in one region can get full care at any Kaiser in any other region. Except Washington. For some reason Washington is still not merged into the rest of the Kaiser network.
