I think Michael C Hall in Safe scared casting directors off from casting Americans as Brits. I am not an accent maven, but his character provided unintended humor with his laughable accent.
I was thinking of that as one of the rare exceptions. John Lithgow as Churchill in 'The Crown' is another, surely not the only two but rare. Not counting British-Americans (eg. Gillian Anderson). As to accent slips, Dominic West was pretty notorious for that in 'The Wire', he worked for Lt 'Dahniels', etc. though obviously a successful performance overall. And he seemed to have worked on it more by the 'The Affair'. But as to 'whatever reasons' home audience sensitivity could be a factor. Eg. not to pile on West, McNulty was supposed to be a Baltimore native but does not sound like one, whereas criticizing his accent vs generic eastern US is nitpicking I admit, and I liked that show. There's more consciousness of accents in UK, the actors have to do regional ones and English v Scottish etc correctly too. US audience might care less. International audience is naturally going to care less still on average, and zero about original actor accents for shows where they read subtitles or listen to dubbing (there are significant regional accents in South Korea and a scene in Woo where she asks the NK defector why she doesn't sound like a North Korean and the actress shifts to an exaggerated version of western NK accent, virtually nobody in the broader world audience cares).

^^Sometimes Americans playing Americans can have funny results. I see this a lot in spy series. it seems like with foreign intelligence agencies, they always have to liason with a CIA officer at some point, and the CIA officer often sounds funny, even crude. Not sure if it's because Americans -- and thus American actors -- sound a bit flat compared to the well-educated Brits or the smooth-talking French, but the result is often laughable.

I've never been able to get out of my mind the "cowboy" CIA officer in "Les Bureau des Legendes", who looked and sounded like a Texas Ranger.

I liked the HBO limited series of David Beckhem. Pretty amazing talent on the pitch and pretty impressive in the business world as well, particularly for a guy without a "Posh" English secondary education. As for his wife, Posh...well she was more likable than I figured she would be and they appear to have a pretty solid relationship, which is not the norm in many celebrity marriages. Thumbs up for this well done series.

I'm re-watching "Band of Brothers" on Netflix.
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/band_of_brothers 97% 96%

In some ways it's even more enjoyable than the 1st time.
Characters like Bull Randleman don't get prominent roles until later episodes, but they have lines in the early ones too.
Those first two episodes were exquisite. That bonding is a rare occurrence in life.

I'm gonna have to read the book.

Good example is Claudia, the handler from "The Americans".

Oh wait ....she's KGB. :D

Okay, to keep on current stuff, I'll soon be starting "Bosch Legacy". But first I want to finish the latest Bosch/Lincoln Lawyer book. Don't want the two Bosches to conflict.

Found on Peacock.

It’s a mix bag of a whole bunch of different shows tossed together. I don’t recommend.

Netflix- Limited Series "Exposed: The Ghost Train Fire". A true story from 1979 based on a fatal fire in the amusement park below the Sydney Harbor bridge. Horrific tragedy whose investigation is fast tracked and an national inquiry convened where none of the actual witnesses are called to testify. For fans of Ozzie crime series like Underbelly, it is no coincidence that the storyline goes through many of the same locations.

Bogleheads -

I have started watching season 4 of “For All Mankind” and it is excellent.

In my opinion, Apple TV knocks it out of the park with this show!

Not that I am advocating this but we have watched all Yellowstone seasons to date by borrowing the disks from our local library. That way you can preserve the original dialogue if you are so inclined. I haven't been able to wrap my head around what the network will do with Beth as time goes on... :beer
We finished the first season last night. It's bad, nearly "Sons of Anarchy" bad. You're just waiting for the next completely implausible emergency to happen. The plot lines are comically unrealistic. Several people have told us how amazing the first few seasons are, but that it gets ridiculous in the later seasons...ummm, the storyline is ridiculous from the jump. Its saving grace is that the dialogue isn't as corny as SOA and it's at least somewhat entertaining. We'll probably continue to watch unless we find something else.

Before I started (and subsequently finished) "Bosch Legacy", I watched a few episodes of "Burn Notice" (Hulu). I plan on finishing season one before deciding where to go next. It's lightweight (in sunny MIami) and has kind of a MacGyver touch to it (do-it-yourself spycraft).

I will look into "Case Histories" based on the two recs.

Money Explained on Netflix.

Six 20 minute episodes that talk about Student loans, Gambling, Credit Cards, Retirement and Get Rich Schemes.

I made my teenage son watch them all. He was furious about what awaits his generation ... and rightfully so!

Maybe I'll make a separate post about it as this will simply get lost.

Now through Nov. 27, Max is offering its Max With Ads plan for $2.99 per month for six months. It's usually $9.99 per month, so you can save more than $40 as you make your way through the best of HBO (and maybe some trash TV courtesy of the 90 Day Fiancé universe). It'll auto-renew at $9.99 after the discounted trial unless you cancel.

The deal is open to new and returning Max customers on Max.com, though Max doesn't specify if there are any restrictions on the "returning" group. You can also get it if you sign up via Roku, Google Play, and Apple. It's limited to new customers if you sign up via Amazon Fire.

We've been enjoying Lawman Bass Reeves on Paramount+. Its supposedly based on a true story but we havent looked into the real person yet since we want to see how things play out.

Ironically, Snake Oil on FOX looked like it would be dumb but is hilarious despite David Spade being dry as the host. Some of the things people actually sell out there are insane.

Bass Reeves is the Texas ranger that the Lone Ranger is loosely based upon. Enjoying the show.
Started watching Monarch Legacy of Monsters on Apple. Based on the Godzilla universe Kurt Russell and his son play old and young versions of the same character. If you like Godzilla universe it’s entertaining. So far there’s not a huge emphasis on the actual kaiju, but interesting human stories.

Watched s5e1 of Fargo on Hulu. There are 10 episodes. The first two dropped this past week.

Lots of action. We didn't really understand the situation in e1 beyond violence and surprises. We'll watch more, but weren't grabbed by the pilot episode to immediately watch e2. (In fact after e1 we went back to our usual night time viewing of Yellowstone and the original Frasier.)

From wikipedia: Set in North Dakota and Minnesota in 2019, the plot of the show's fifth season has been teased with the following questions: "When is a kidnapping not a kidnapping, and what if your wife isn't yours?"[10] Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh have been cast as lead characters Roy Tillman, Dorothy "Dot" Lyon, and Lorraine Lyon, respectively. Additional cast members include Joe Keery as Gator Tillman, Lamorne Morris as Witt Farr, Richa Moorjani as Indira Olmstead, Dave Foley as Danish Graves and David Rysdahl as Wayne Lyon.

Season 5 again has the "based on a true story" banner at the start, that started with the movie and continued with the series.. Wikipedia explains that as well.

We're interested in this, but apprehensive as we couldn't even get through the 4th season after really enjoying the first 3. We're working our way through season 2 of Yellowstone, usually an episode a night before we head to bed. It gets more unrealistic and ridiculous with each episode, but it's at least somewhat entertaining.

We're just starting s3 of Yellowstone. Season 2 got me thinking (I can't be the first) that the setting and characters bear some resemblance to those in Bonanza all those years ago, although there was no daughter or character like Beth.

I think "The Big Valley" was a lot more like Bonanza than Yellowstone is. Yellowstone is far more treacherous and over the top in almost every way.

Started watching "The Syndicate" on Britbox

Light drama/comedy about a group of struggling young adults who are told they won 500 pounds in the lottery and are given the cash by the clerk. They later find out ticket was worth 27 million pounds and set off to find the clerk that stole the ticket. Just finished episode 2. So far so good.

Also just finished the last MI 5 episode. Great series.

No joy for me in finding watchable tv shows.

I watched parts of three new shows recommended by NYT Watching this week.

I watched 2 episodes of The Bookie on Max. It's a new Chuck Lorre series. There were cameo appearances by Charlie Sheen and Angus T. Jones in e1. Charlie makes a gratuitous mention of Jon Cryer.

Rogerebert.com titles it's review "Max’s Bookie isn’t a TV Comedy Bet Worth Taking". I agree. I won't watch another.

I also watched a small part of Genie with Melissa McCarthy on Peacock. I don't recommend what I saw. No laughs for me.

The 3rd was part of The Artful Dodger on Hulu. It's an Aussie series based on the Dickens character several years after London. Dodger is now a surgeon in Australia with criminal aspects. I don't recommend it based on the part that I watched.

Just finished S4 of Fargo. Apparently DW and I are the only two people on the planet who enjoyed S4 but we did. We actually turned off S3 but plan on giving it another shot. I know S5 has just started.

We also just started A Murder At The End of The World. We're only one episode in but its interesting so far. Reminds me a lot of Knives Out atm. Its also on Hulu.

Still enjoying guilty pleasures like Snake Oil and Name That Tune on FOX as well as Survivor on CBS.

I've watched the first 3 and have enjoyed them. But I have to admit, I've liked all the Taylor Sheridan shows: Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown.

I'm looking forward to S3 of Slow Horses. Great show. I haven't started watching the season yet.

Shetland, on Amazon Prime with Britbox.

I watched episode 1, season 8 just now available for streaming in the U.S. A new detective inspector takes over from Jimmy Perez and Tosh, to solve crimes committed by a London gang. A witness has fled to Shetland to hide.

Excellent.

Probably a good test of whether one has ice water in their veins. :D
I think that is the best "commercial" I have ever seen!

We're still struggling through season 2 of Yellowstone, on like episode 6. IMO 1883 was OK, but poorly written (OMG, Elsa's monologues  ) and Yellowstone is much of the same (but even more ridiculous plot development). I think I've said this previously, but Sheridan seems to be the new Kurt Sutter (writer of Sons of Anarchy); have a really interesting setup for a show, but ruin it with ridiculous/unbelievable plot lines and terrible dialogue. I honestly think we'll slowly continue slogging through Yellowstone as it is at least mildly entertaining and there is nothing else we're interested in, but I am totally confused about the praise this show has gotten.

Obviously tastes vary, but Yellowstone was the most watched scripted series for 2022-2023 (beat only by Sunday NFL football).

Well said.

(Elsa killed any chance of us watching past the first couple of episodes. Plus the suspension of reality was WAY too much for either of us.)

I guess Paramount will have about 15 new shows from him a year...each more outlandish than the last. We enjoyed "The Mayor of Kingstown" initially, but it went off the rails...as pretty much all of them do for us.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV+
There are four episodes now available. Each one either put one of us to sleep and/or almost put the both of us to sleep. Probably I
don't remember because I was sleeping.
None of the actors were able to convince me to care whether or not Godzilla or another monster killed them.

Anyone here watch and enjoy it?

My first thought when I saw this series: "Why?"

If suspension of reality is a concern of yours, don't bother with Yellowstone; it's miles worse than 1883 in that context. I understand the entertainment aspect (we're still watching Yellowstone, almost solely just to see the next illogical trainwreck), but the writing is just bad...I just saw that Taylor Sheridan was actually in "Sons on Anarchy"; may explain some of the resemblance.

If suspension of reality is a concern, I wouldn't watch any tv including the news. To me everything is getting more outlandish. The worst offenders to me are movies like Fast and Furious, Mission Impossible, those Netflix movies like Bodyguard's whatever and even the Bond movies. Even The Watcher was outlandish even though it was based on a true story!

Absolutely agree. It's even worse with movies, but TV is in general really poorly written (formulaic, unrealistic, more focused on virtue signaling then telling a good story). The news; never watched it and certainly wouldn't start today. And it's basically impossible to make a comedy now, outside of South Park. In the last few years, only shows that I can say had good writing are "The Bear", the first 3 seasons of "Fargo", and the first season of "House of Dragon" was decent. Most shows we start we never get through the first episode. I can opine why this is, but then we'd get this thread closed. The large majority of my time spent in front of our TV is sports - UFC/One/Bellator, NCAA wrestling, college football - and that time has progressively decreased (not that this is a bad thing).

Sounds like I'm the crotchety old man sitting on my porch, but I'm a millenial.

The sad thing is, I try to carefully screen what I am going to watch by reading a synopsis, reviews, looking at IMDB/Rotten Tomatoes/etc ratings and most are still disappointing. On a positive note, with all the streaming services + cable+network tv there are way more shows to pick from than ever. I do find enough that I enjoy but there is a lot of garbage to sift through.
