That’s a good song. I’ve always been a fan and at one time owned all their albums. I think Happy Trails was their best album. I saw them in concert once. There’s a slew of live albums that've come out since then and I’ve only scratched the surface.wabbott wrote: ↑Wed Sep 13, 2023 7:20 pm Fresh Air: Quicksilver Messenger Service. Catchy song, but what's with all the whining?
Well, it turns out the duo had a bad experience with their previous record label, so this is a rant against the music industry.

Just ran across an old album of mine: Leon Redbone's Red to Blue (1985). Good stuff!

They did do an excellent version of that song, although a surprise that they even covered it in the first place. It was live, correct?

Went to a music festival this weekend. The last song tonight by the last band was an extremely popular Fleetwood Mac song, maybe from that album. The band was super talented and they did an excellent job on the song. Recommend seeing them if they come to your area. Their name is:
Cool Cool Cool
Two female lead vocalists, bass, drums, 3 horns, and keyboardist. One of the horns also played keyboards and the keyboardist also played guitar. I moved to be standing right in front of him when I knew it was time in the song for a blistering solo.

Maybe. My sister and brother-in-law were about 7 years older than me.roamingzebra wrote: ↑Sat Sep 16, 2023 12:58 pmI had all those albums at some point.

Does that mean I'm getting old?![]()
I noticed something when I was 22 and they were 29. I was still into my heavy music while they were as you describe above.
So, in my usual naive way, I thought that this was a natural progression that everyone goes through. But when I hit their age .. no change. More years go by ... no change.
I described this to a friend and my puzzlement over this and she replied, "You will always like that music because you love it!"
Exactly 50 years have gone by since that age 22 and I still love it all. Last night at the festival one of the last band of the night ended with Black Sabbath's Sweet Leaf. Loved it!

Blue Oyster Cult one of my all-time favorites. I think I have seen them six or seven times.
But the first time was notable.
They opened for Alice Cooper -- Worcester, MA, January 1972.
We were big Alice fans, had never heard of Blue Oyster, and were there just to see Alice Cooper.
But after Blue Oyster Cult played my friend and I said to one another they must have been really good to keep us interested and at bay while we waited for Alice to come on. Then our band did two of their songs from their first record.
Back to that specific show. Decades later I read a book on Blue Oyster Cult. Turned out that was a pivotal show in their career. Alice Cooper had started out with someone else on that tour but dropped them and replaced them with Blue Oyster Cult just for that show. But once they saw how they performed at that show they keep them as an opener for the balance of their tour, obviously a major break in the band's career.
Their lead guitarist, Buck Dharma, is one of the all-time best underrated guitarists.

We saw them sometime in late 1970 / early 1971 in Boston. We kept chanting, "Who Do You Love." but we never got it! It was the Dino Valenti era, who was a step down from the vocalist on the Happy Trails record.

Except will probably did not adding any Rap or Hip Hop since I don't consider them to be music. Where's the guitar??!! And, just about all other instrumentation except for a repetitive beat and someone talking?

But seriously, The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac have staying power for me because I like the lighter stuff now. I used to be into Rick Wakeman, Roxy Music and some of the other "richer" stuff. Kind of makes me sick to the stomach now. And recently someone posted a David Bowie song, so I tried one of my old favorites, "Panic in Detroit"; don't like it now.
As for rap, I recently tried some Jay-Z just to see what all the excitement was about. Total Fail for me. But I do like rap mixed in with other songs. Just not alone.

"Lola" -The Kinks.
Got laid up after knee surgery this past 3 weeks and have taken to You Tube due to a lot of time on my hands. One of the genres of videos is the "first reaction to...". The premise is the reviewer is unaware of the song featured and posts a reaction to it. The reviewers are usually young and are unaware of music from the 50's through 80's. One of the songs I find fascinating is "Lola". Old timers like me(63) are well familiar with the song(released in 1970). The song is catchy and if you don't pay attention to the lyrics you will think it is a straightforward story of boy meets girl in a bar. Without revealing the surprising twist in the story, it is absolutely hilarious watching the reviewers realize what the song is really about. I must admit when I was much younger I didn't realize what the story really was and just thought it was a killer rock song. If you have never heard this song before I suggest a You Tube video with lyrics.

You inspired me to look for another favorite, Carly Simon's, Let the River Run, from the Working Girl movie. So hard to find the movie version of the song except on Youtube. It's blocked on spotify and other streamers. For me the movie version is the best.
Anyway here's a first reaction by a different reviewer to the album version
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8euLW8SYkbI
He seems surprised to hear of Carly and seems to do a double take seeing a young Harrison Ford in the video.
I finally found out, from wikipedia, that the drummer is Mickey Curry and the guitar is Jimmy Ryan (if I'm reading correctly.) Awesome performances by both!

Obviously still extremely active.
What state are you in?
I am in Massachusetts. The only time they play close to me is in New York but outside of my hour limit to travel to hear music (I will stretch that to 1.25 hours if it is a long day of music).

At one point I thought that if I was going to be a roadie with a band ... Foghat would be the band. A band whose same songs I could listen to night after night after night and still look forward to hearing them.
I think I finally saw them in the late 90s when it was maybe only one or two in the band. Or, maybe it was a former Foghat guitarist who was playing in one of those bands of old that only had a few members left to it.

It was somewhat close to the first time I saw them in 1972. Then I don't think I saw them again for about 30 years. In the last 20 I've seen them another handful of times.
Each time they were excellent.

Heartbeat
Adrian Belew
From 2009
This is the first time I've ever heard of him and hearing anything by him.
Sounds quite good, though.
I continue to be amazed at how much relatively old music there is out there that I like but am still completely unaware of the performer (until I finally do hear them).

I got it.
I’m in California. Looks like BOC was in my area in summer of 2022, missed them.

I see that they play in California this month and next. But I also know that California is a HUGE state. So this Friday in Bakersfield is not close to you?Chv396 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 19, 2023 1:15 pm I got it.
