Online Investment Management Company for Expats overseas.

Post by KiwiRob »

Hello,

We are U.S. citizens who are about to permanently move to New Zealand. Our current financial advisor, who manages our Roth IRA and community property accounts, cannot continue to oversee our retirement accounts as they are not authorized to handle international accounts. They have referred me to other brick-and-mortar financial institutions that they recommended for our situation, but none of them have worked out. As a result, I have been exploring online investment management companies such as Vanguard, Merrill Edge, TD Ameritrade, Fidelity, etc., to manage our portfolio while we are overseas (funding from U.S.-generated income).

Could you kindly provide any guidance or recommendations for our situation and/or firms that you could endorse?

Thank you!

Vanguard, Fidelity, Schwab are the most reputed but they may not work with you if they know you are abroad. But you can talk to Schwab International or Vanguard International who handles foreign accounts. Or visit a local Schwab or FIdelity office and explain your situation. But I think better option is a non-AUM hourly rate financial adviser to handle the accounts. You can search for non-AUM fee only financial adviser in the searchbox. :o

FYI - This thread is in the Non-US Investing forum because it attracts investors with non-US investing experience - which includes ex-pats.

They most certainly will not.

Schwab International does't look like they can help. Trying to open an account with New Zealand gives Schwab currently cannot open accounts for residents of your country/region. This is likely due to a restriction by New Zealand. You may be able to open accounts at Schwab at your US address and then transfer to Schwab International. I've heard it recommended to do so six months in advance but I don't know if that's cut and dried.

Schwab International says they offer consultants but I think that very much depends on the country of residence. https://international.schwab.com/service-and-support

I don't believe Vanguard International offers access to US domiciled funds.

Interactive Brokers is best suited to open accounts for foreign residents by being structured to operate virtually globally. However, their advisors are only US based.

Do know that nobody is able to sell mutual funds to foreign residents. That is a mutual fund distribution agreement restriction. Invariably, some will post then can buy mutual fund from overseas, but it always seems like they were long time customers who were grandfathered in before new rules were enacted after 911 and enforcement was tightened in recent years.

Mark Zoril gets recommended here, but I think that is advice only. I don't believe he manages the account transactions.
